View Full Version : My 80 Z Clone Pro Touring in progress

Hello everyone, I'm fairly new here and haven't posted much. Looked at alot of sweet builds on here and thought I would start a thread of my own finally. I spend alot of time on NastyZ28 where I have another build thread for this car going. I have an 80 Camaro that I have had for about 12 years now. I am turning into a Z28 clone and pro touring. You'll see in the pictures I am missing the fender vents which are still sitting on my bench for the last 10 years :/. I figured I would post pictures from when I got it and through its progress and changes over the years up till what I have recently done. It is not done yet. It's getting alot closer though. Hoping in about a year or two it will be fully finished. Well here goes and enjoy. Any comments or advice are welcome. When I bought the car it was all stock. I have since redone the interior, the trunk, engine bay and engine. So far the car is a mildly built 350 sbc, M21 Muncie 4 speed, 3:73 posi, ls1 rear disc brakes, Pro Touring FBody Comp suspension with frame connectors, solid body mounts and front sway bar brace, Addco front and rear sway bars, Edelbrock IAS shocks, U.S. Wheels and Bridgestone tires (Just put them on a week ago) and I'm probably forgetting some other stuff. I'll try to fill in the blanks along the way.

Nice work! Any details on how you did the trunk? Very nice!
J. Chris Davis
07-13-2014, 01:22 PM
Thank you. For the trunk all I did was glue in carpeting that I bought from J.C. Whitney and made the walls with some pretty stiff cardboard. I might do more of a professional job later, but it turned out really well. So for now I'm happy with it.

Love those wheels. What size and backspacing are you running?
J. Chris Davis
07-14-2014, 08:40 AM
The fronts are 17x8" with 4.5" backspace. The rears are 17x9.5" with 5.5" backspace. They were supposed to be 5" backspace. They fit just fine, but I threw a 1/4" spacer in the rears to bring them out towards the fenders more. I also rolled the rear fender lip. Tires on the front are 245/45-17 and the rears are 285/40-17.

New pictures with the new seats I put in. They are the Procar Rally seats. They do have the issue of sitting a little high though. That will be something I'll work on this winter.

No real update other than I started gathering the parts needed for the C5 front disk brake swap that I'll be putting LS1 calipers on for clearance. I've got most of the parts to do it, but waiting till I get tubular control arms this winter. So I will probably start that project in Feb. or March.
J. Chris Davis

Just another little update. I have everything now for the C5/LS1 front brake conversion and ordered the upper and lower control arms from PTFB. The lower control arms have about a 3 week wait, but I don't really plan on starting this for about another month.

Got some goodies in the mail today. Got the upper control arms and bump steer kit. Just waiting on the lowers and the upper ball joints which should be here next week. Might be able to get started on this next weekend. Also dropped the spindles off to get sand blasted today.

How do you like those seats?

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with the seats. I do still need to figure out how I can lower them a little bit more though, but I am also 6'1".

Thank you. Right now is their busy time of year so when I placed my order I knew I was going to have to wait a little bit. He wasn't far off from what he gave me for estimated times. I'm also in the same state as them and we have had some bad weather which caused some delays. Anyway I waited about 4 weeks for the upper control arms and the bump steer kit. I should be receiving the lower control arms next week. I was also calling them every other week just to keep in contact and updated on the items. I have placed serveral orders with them in the past and received those items within a week. I usually placed those orders around June or July though. So I have had a good experiance with them and Dave (owner) is a good guy to talk to with plenty of knowledge. The quality of the products I bought have been outstanding as well.

Good to know. It just seems like his uppers are the best deal out there. The price is right, you get the tall ball joints and the 5 degrees caster built in.

Agreed. They look to be pretty well built as well.

Bled the brakes last Thursday, but need to get the wheel alignment done before I really drive it anywhere. I was able to move it around my drive way and the brakes seems to work just fine. Won't know till I get out on the road at a decent speed. So since I'm waiting to get that done I went ahead and removed my headliner to redo that. Just want to recover it to hide the holes from the shoulder belts and the sun visors that I removed.

Got the Aluminum grilles I ordered. Supposed to be in satin black, but I would call it more like gloss. They look pretty good otherwise and a lot nicer than I was expecting.

Headliner is finished and the trim is back on. I do have a couple of wrinkles that are seen in the pictures. Hoping I can get those worked out. Now it's ready to go to the alignment shop on Thursday.

Well I got the Camaro to the alignment shop last night and got it on the rack. The alignment guy and I were trying to figure out what was with the high toe out that I had and the inner tie rods and bumpsteer kit were fully threaded in as far as they could go. Got Dave with PTFB on the phone right away and started measuring everything. We determined the sleeves in the bumpsteer kit I received were too long. They were 10" long when the kit was supposed to have 8.5" sleeves. Dave found a couple that were the correct length and is getting them shipped out to me Today. Not a big deal other than having to take the car back home and reschedule with the alignment shop. I at least got to drive the Camaro back and forth across town. Those control arms and brakes with my same master cylinder work great so far (haven't tried any really hard driving or braking yet). Can't wait to get it aligned next week and be able to see what the car can really do.

Got the new bumpsteer kit sleeves installed. They are both 9" in length. I was able to get the wheels straight with about a half inch to and inch of adjustment left in it. I do like that these new ones are powder coated.

Got the car back from the alignment shop this morning. Haven't been able to drive it much yet, but everything seems good. I still have a lean from left to right. I think I might try to redo my shackles and see if that helps any.

That's cool. I had a 76 Riviera in high school and would have kept it, but the frame was getting pretty bad. Spent its whole life in Northern Illinois. I do have a 98 Riviera though that I got about 5 years ago. That gets used as my daily driver for the most part.

Been a while since I have posted. I installed the Billet grilles yesterday that I purchased almost a year ago. They will be getting powder coated flat black to match the headlight buckets. I also have been mocking up a junk center console with parking brake. Looking for opinions on it at this point. It will function fine, but not sure how it looks. I also picked up some speaker kick panels which is another reason I am considering moving the parking brake.

In other updates to the car. I have bee busy replacing the stereo speakers and the stereo with a Pioneer Bluetooth CD player. Replaced the rear 6x9's with Polk Audio, still working on the kick panels, but bought Polks for those too. Added radio power off timer and dome light fader dimmer. I also added led courtesy lights and replaced the gauge lights with LED's. I don't have a picture of the courtesy lights, but here's one of the dash.

It was a thought, but my cowl piece is damaged on the front and back right corner mount from the previous owner tightening them down too tight. So I really need a new one. I do have a little problem of hood clearance and getting enough airflow. I was also thinking about going with a 2" cowl hood.
Nice looking Camaro you got there! I like that blue!

There is a way to make a cold air box for what ever hood you use,Just use your factory air filter base with K&N replacement for your stock air filter with a K&N "pro-flow top.and a 1980-1 hood seal. That seal your hood and takes car of your airflow issues.I did something similar on my 1979 camaro .But I used a 1980-1 Z-28 hood brace as well.
J. Chris Davis
04-07-2016, 07:50 AM
Thanks for the information. I had been looked at those "pro flow" tops. I was considering it, but that would not help my current situation without having to get a 80-81 Z induction set up or modifiing my 78-79 style cowl on the car. I also never had a factory air filter base. So getting to the cost of finding one and doing all the modifications I think I'd prefer to get the 2" cowl hood that I was originally looking at doing. This would allow me to have a little taller air filter say 3" where I'm at a 2" one now. Kinda like the look of the 2" cowl as well.

Drew up a quick sketch diagram of how I think I'm going to do this set up. I don't like the wire lengths of some of this stuff and where I'd be forced to put the LED control boxes under the hood. I want all this stuff under the dash. So I'm going to add wire and relocate plugs for most of the set up. Then the only thing going into the engine bay would be the wires to the LED's on the headlights and the main power feed to the battery with a fuse at my junction box which is right by the battery.

Over the weekend update. Got the Halo headlights installed. That took longer than I had hoped. I had to rewire just about everything to get the wires long enough to mount everything where I wanted it. No problem, just time consuming. I had the center bulb covers (diffusers?) powder coated black. Iron Horse the local powder coater did them for me real quick on Friday so I could get this project done over the weekend. They turned out really nice. I'm pretty happy with them so far. Of course they have no real function other than show or if you want to use the halo as a day time running light. Now I can get back to finishing the speaker kick panels.

Started up and put about 30 miles on it Saturday. Everything checks good and running great. Other than a couple of small items I think I am done with this till this coming winter. Then I'll figure out the parking brake situation. Just going to enjoy the car for the season. It's also time to get started on the IROC project I've had going, but had to stop since it sits in storage during the winter. That still needs its trunk motor repaired and door hinge pins replaced before I go too much further with it. Really only needs driver side, but I'm going to do both.

Been a while since I posted. No update on the 80 at the moment. Been plugging away at the IROC when I haven't been busy with other obligations. I have a few things I do want to do to it this winter though. I want to get the parking brakes figured out as to how I want to do them. Still want to redo my shackles to see if I can get any of the side lean out of the car. Looking at building a couple of lower dash hush panels to cover up the wiring from under the dash. Possibly redo the trunk and how I have the sub in there. Then I think I'm going to tint my front side marker and rear tail light lenses and possibly get the sequential tail lights from Digi-tails. Still considering a 2" cowl hood, but haven't talked myself into that yet. There's other small stuff I want to do that I'm not thinking of at the moment.

I decided to go ahead and get an AMD 2" cowl hood. The hood fits great. Wasn't much of any trouble getting it lined up and it lines up pretty well. Right now it is pushing up on the left side of the hood. Tried to adjust the back down and the front up. When I did, I found that the rivet holding the two pieces of hinge together is pretty worn out and I think it's causing the hinge to be sprung a little when closed pushing up on the hood. Should have another hinge on in a week or two. I still need to clean the hood of all the sticky packing stuff tonight. Put the 3" air filter I ordered with the hood on there now and I can finally use my Edelbrock air cleaner lid that I bought many years ago. I will get some more pictures once I get the car outside in the daylight.

Sometimes side lean is a result of incorrectly installed front springs, if the side lean is only really noticeable from the rear it might be a front spring that isn't in the correct position in the upper pocket of the subframe. Waiting to see what you come up with on the E-Brake and why did you got backwards on the dash?

Both front springs have been checked and are in proper position. I haven't done much about it yet. Kinda keep working on other stuff. I have not done anything with the parking brakes yet either. Hoping I'll have some time this winter to mess with that.

I've been working on this little mod on and off for a few months. I don't like having stuff hanging from my visors so I've always had my garage door remote in the center console. That gets annoying digging that out every time. So I cut out a hole in my ash tray and mounted a 99 Cadillac Homelink garage door remote that will be wired directly to the car.

So for my next project I am going to work on this winter will finally be the parking brakes. I won't be putting a parking brake handle in the console like I was originally going to do. I didn't really want to cut up my console for it and still wasn't sure I liked how it looked. So I have found a 2" stroke, 225 lbs force linear actuator that I'm going to most likely mount to my welded in subframe connector and use the Lokar cables I got. I'm still looking at other possible locations. I'll wire up a momentary rocker switch and hide it on the bottom side of my dash. This is the actuator I found. Also including a Youtube video of the exact thing I'm doing that someone did with the C2 Corvette which is where I got the idea.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-12-Inch-Black-Linear-Actuator-Stroke-225-Pound-Max-Lift-Output-12V-Volt-DC/152671861711?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&var=452229246191&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

J. Chris Davis
10-25-2017, 05:09 AM
The only issue I see having is the mounting of the actuator to the frame rail since I will not be able to get behind that frame rail to put a support plate on the other side of the bracket. I'm still working on that minor detail. Might be able to cut a hole and weld a plate in with nuts welded to it for the bracket to mount to. I probably won't get started on this for a few months.

I will keep detailed progress on this project once I get going on it. The switch I got is a 20 amp momentary 2 way rocker so I don't think I'll bother wiring in any relays, but I will get a fuse holder inline. The actuator is only a max of 5 amp draw.

Been a while since I've posted something on my build. I've been messing around here and there with stuff. I worked on my electric parking brake assembly by cutting down the cable bracket and redrilling the mounting hole for the actuator piston. Also bought some plastic stock to make some under dash panels and I got all of my weather stripping changed over to Soffseal which I really like. That is some soft material and fits like original.

So I've gotten a little side tracked. I had to replace my driver door handle because it decided to break. I finally got my door windows adjusted to near perfect fit with the new weather stripping. Just a couple of tweaks to the weather stripping and I should have a good seal all the way around. Since I had to take my door panels off I decided it was time to add power door lock switches to my set up. Since 2003 I've only had my keyless entry remote to lock and unlock the doors. I think I'm going to go with some 4th Gen Firebird switches and put them on the arm rest surface of my door panels. I think once I get this new project finished I can get the car in the air and start working on the parking brakes and the lower dash panels.
J. Chris Davis
03-06-2018, 11:17 AM
The door locks and keyless entry are wired and rewired and everything tests good. Found a couple of 4th gen Firebird door lock switches and a passenger side switch bezel to use. I started working on the switch bezel I got and started to cut that apart. Going to use that as a template for the switch holes and cut the switch mounts out of as well. Once I have a good template and measured on the lower door panel where I want them to go I will get that cut and start attaching the switch holders to the door panel. I think JB Weld should hold these on there pretty well. Along with the pictures I posted the wiring diagram I drew up for this setup.

Got my templates made and door panels marked. Started cutting out the hole for the driver side switch. I will get more progress and hopefully some more pictures tomorrow. With any luck this should look good once I'm all done. I'm also thinking about using the steering wheel I put on my 87 IROC. I like the feel of it compared to the one I have on the 80. I'll just put the stock wheel back on the IROC for now. I can strip the black paint off if I don't like how it looks. It was originally natural aluminum, but I painted it for the looks in the IROC.

I've been working on tinting my front side marker lenses with VHT Niteshade on and off while working on the door locks. I just put the final coats of clear on the other day. I used 3 coats of VHT and I think it ended up being 5 coats of clear. The first time I did these they were too heavy on the tint and almost black so I had to sand them down and start over. I also had a bunch of dust that settled on it and stuck. This time they turned out quite a bit better. I think I'm going to start on the tail lights this weekend starting with tinting the rear amber turn signal lens with VHT red then tint all of the lenses with the VHT Niteshade. The last picture is with my camera flash on.

What are you using for the motor to pull the parking brake? Is that a factory one from something?

The steering wheel is a Momo Millenium. I really like it too. I like the grip on it compared to any wheel I've had. I also painted it black from the natural aluminum. The parking brake motor is a 225 pound linear actuator with 2" travel and I'm using a Lokar cable kit.

Got a link? Never saw one with a rubber boot over it. Are going to use something like a rack/awl (I think that's the term) to lock it in place so the pressure doesn't pull the actuator out again?
A friend of mine did something like that in an Acura RL to make room for kick panel speakers.

Got the side markers installed and started working on the tail light tinting. I took all the lenses apart and red tinted the amber lesnes. In this picture I have them glued back together and going to wet sand the whole thing again and blend the reds together with the red tint. Then I can glue the white lenses back on and start tinting the whole assembly smoke to match the front side markers.

Changing it up a little bit with the tail lights. I like how dark the red turned out and don't think I will be smoke tinting the tail lights like I did with the front side markers. Rather I'm keeping it this dark red and going to color the clear lenses the same. Ordering 4 tail light sockets with 3 wires 2 terminals and a couple more 1157 red LEDs . Going to wire these so all the lights will be on with the tail lights and the inside 2 lights on each side will both function as turn signals. The outer lights will still be brake lights. I will add reverse lights in the future once I decide what I want to do there and where I want them. I'll have more pictures once I get the clear lens colored and attached to the rest of the tail light lenses.

I have the sockets, but still waiting for the correct LED bulbs to get here since they sent me the wrong ones. I need to do some color sanding and polishing to the tail light lenses now that the clear coat is on. I should be getting back to this by Saturday. I also noticed the back up sockets are a hair different as to how they will snap into the housing, but should be easily remedied.

My older brother is building a Black 80 Z/28 at his shop, in NE OK. It's a very solid car, no t-tops, and is coming along nicely. I'm sending him a link to this thread, to give him a little extra inspiration.
Very nice work, Chris!

Small update. Got the lenses clear coated and they just didn't look that great so I've sanded them all back down and going to redo that. I had to order a couple of load resisters because I was getting some power feeding the other tail lights when the turn signals were on lighting them up slightly. I'll put one on each side of the turn signal leads and that should fix that problem.

Finally got the lenses cleaned up retinted red and clear coated. Once they dry I can assemble the tail lights. Here are some pictures of the lenses and then how I wired the tail lights. The two inside tail lights also function as the turn signals. I am mounting some bright white LEDs under the rear impact bar for the back up lights. I see Postimage has my pictures screwed up and not showing on here in my previous posts for some reason.

Got the tail lights assembled this morning. I'm pretty pleased with how they finally turned out. Going to get the back up lights wired in with the programming switch tomorrow and then I should be able to reinstall the tail lights.

Got the Camaro started last night and driven for the first time this year. Got a couple more pictures of the tail lights when I had the garage door open. Next project looks like is going to be an original 150 MPH speedometer that I came across for a great deal, then going to upgrade the dash led bulbs to 360 degree bulbs. I need to replace the circuit grid on the back of the instrument cluster. My original one is getting bad. I'll be installing a little shift light in the center of the dash and using an RPM switch to control that. I also have a little LED light strip that will be going in the section between the two dash halves that kind of resembles how some new cars look. Some day I will get working on the parking brakes. I'll post pictures as progress moves along.

Swapped out the steering wheel I put on the IROC a year ago. I really like this steering wheel and like it better on this car. Momo Millenium. The pictures didn't turn out that great. It's kind of bright with all the lights on in the garage.

I haven't posted anything on the Camaro in a while. I've had the fiberglass 3 piece front spoiler for a while but just received the fiberglass front and rear bumpers today from Stinger. With any luck the Camaro should be going into paint jail in a couple of months.

Camaro went to the painter back in October so nothing to report on yet for that but I have been doing a little work. I decided to order the 1970 console and replace the 73-81 style. I also reconditioned my gauge cluster and put in a 150mph speedo and 8k tach along with a custom oil gauge I made that I have yet to test out.

Not much of an update. Removed everything other than wires going to the fuse panel and engine bay. I removed the factory console mounts and will be working on the new brackets for the 70-72 console. Then clean and get ready for some POR-15 on the floors. After that I can start installing the Killmat.

Great progress! Por-15 does great but also consider putting some lizard skin down to keep the heat down in the cockpit and also dynamat on top. It’s a PITA to redo it…which is what I’m dealing with.

Thank you! I have had this car a very long time and have always liked working on it. I can't wait to see the finished product myself!

Made some progress with the Kilmat. I wanted to get the firewall done so I can get the Dynapad and Dynaliner installed. That way I can get the heater box back in.
Then I can move on to the rest. Working on putting on the foil tape to seal the seams. I went a bit far with the Kilmat but I wanted full coverage.

Just a little bit of an update. I have been working on mocking up and making brackets for the second relay/fuse panel for all of the extra stuff I want to add. I also got my hands on a tilt column that I have been rebuilding as well.

I have the column all done except that I had to replace the turn signal cam which is now done and the levers I bought were not right for this column. I also found out that the tilt and non tilt ignition switch on the steering column are different so I had to get one of those on order. Should have it done this week. Here are some pictures of the assembly of the reconditioned column. I had the main piece of the column blasted and powder coated.

Finally got to the install of the electric parking brake set up. here are some pictures from that project. Used the Lokar kit, a linear actuator and a couple of custom brackets for LS1 brakes.
Still a bit dirty under the car that I still need to clean up. I'm also using 12" Race Ramps to support the car. Much better than floor jacks.

Working away on wiring. I will be cleaning everything up once I am finished running wire for everything. I wanted additional items that I did not want to run off of my factory fuse panel so I added another one with relays that will be accessible through the glove box door. I won't have a glove box insert anymore but don't really need it. I also picked up a rear package tray from Classic Industries and installed my rear speakers.

It looks like you're running 1/4" brake from the distribution block line to the rear tee fitting before it splits over the axle... I'm assuming from the tee it's 3/16" to the rear disks.. did you have any issues building pressure or bleeding the calipers?

Here are some older pictures I have of the cardboard panels in the trunk. I don't have plans on them as of yet. These were just keep cutting cardboard till it fit properly then throw some carpet on it. It was always meant to be temporary till I built new panels. I am a little ways off from starting on the trunk. Once I can get back to where those panels are here in the recent future I can get some further pictures of the panels.

Also got the wires all loomed and ready to go where they need to go.

So I came across these tail light weather strip brackets through a Youtube video from Double R Restorations.
He purchased these from Gordon Crowe Fabrication who makes these brackets.
They work great for getting that corner of the weather strip to to sit correctly.
Shout out to Double R Restorations for the video that led me to these and
a shout out to Gorden Crowe who is producing these for our late second gen Camaros.
I have a link below for the video from Double R Restorations and Gordon Crowe's FB page where you can reach him.

The trunk project is now complete. Other than cleaning up the tires some more the Camaro should be all finished.

I used the same seats in my 73 Z28 Camaro with a LS3/TKO 600 swap. Great seats at a reasonable price.

Not much of an update but I did replace my headlight adjusters, springs and buckets. I also had the headlight rings powder coated black so they blend in better now.
