I have had my 1969 Mach 1 since I was 15 (almost 12 years). My father and I finished restoring the car when I was 17. I drove the car a few thousand miles before parking in to upgrade the suspension and engine. After taking a lot of the car apart, my busy life kicked in and I never got around to finishing the car.

Fast forward to this month, I am finally able to get back to work on the car.

The car has been sitting inside for years, worked on very little here and there. My dad has painted show cars for nearly 30 years and we both did every bit of the work to this car. Most of the floor pans and sheet metal are original except for the typical areas, and every inch of the car has been coated with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator.

I have now decided to go the Pro-Touring route with the car. I now have the means to do the car the way I want. The paint is still nearly flawless from when we originally completed the car except for a few areas that a little touch up and buffing will fix. This build will consist of some wheel well massaging, new wheels and suspension, and a custom interior.

Here is the timeline of the car:

Here is the car when I first got it after I started stripping the paint. Obviously, the previous owner decided to things a little differently with the car. Its originally supposed to be Candle Apple Red, Black Deluxe Interior, 351W 2BBL, FMX.

Tan vinyl was stapled over everything and most of the original Mach 1 stuff was gone.

This is when I tore the car back apart to smooth the engine compartment, paint a few things like the Mach 1 mirrors and reverse light, and re-do the suspension, brakes, and finish the interior. It sat for many, many years.

Did some test fitting with my 18x10 Boze Forged wheels with 295/35's from my 94.

I will be doing a 1" mini tub in order to fit 18x11's with a 295-315 tire. There is 1" between the fold-down-rear-seat interior panels and the wheel wells, so I am able to mini-tub 1" and still retain a fully functioning fold down.

The Air Ride system mounts in the same position as the original leafs, but the lower arms are offset and allow .75" extra space compared to the leafs.

These didnt fit at all; backspacing was all wrong

Small update:

I received convertible Maier subframe connectors rather than the correct fastback subframes. It was a lengthy process but I finally got the correct ones last week. Currently both tubs are cut out and the rear end is being mocked. i'll be narrowing the rear about 3/4" on each side so I can be sure to get the widest dish possible on the rear wheels. I also have a rear end brace that will be welded to the rear end followed by a gloss black powder coat.

Here is how it sits

I found some time to work on the car yesterday. Most of that time was spent measuring and test fitting the rear end to make sure we welded the Ride Tech brackets to the right spot on the rear end to get the correct pinion angle and ride height. This was an unexpected lengthy process for a couple reasons; First, I am using a Lincoln Versailles 9" rear end in place of my stock 9" housing for the beefier housing and factory disc brakes. This housing has already been shortened to match the stock width of a 69 Mustang. The area where the upper control arm brackets weld to the housing have a much different contour than the standard 1969 9" housing. This led to some extra trial and error, extra grinding and extra welding. The second reason this took so long was we started making my ride height measurements from the ground to the body/frame. We discovered that the concrete was uneven, so we decided to make wood blocks to fit between the rear housing and the rear frame rail, jack the rear end up until it touched the blocks, and judge our ride height from there measuring from the axle to the fender lip. This worked perfect, and allowed us to finally weld the upper control arm brackets where they belong.

This rear end is obviously pretty old, so there is some pitting in the metal that made welding a perfect weld a little difficult, but I think it turned out okay. I planned on powder coating the housing, but since I want to fill in these pits, I'll most likely take the extra steps to prime and paint gloss black rather than powder coat.

I also intended on narrowing the rear end an inch or so, but we discovered that the back of the calipers would hit the u-bolts to the Ride Tech, so unfortunately that wont work.

We sprayed some black primer over the welds to make sure they would look good after paint.

Here is the progress of the rear wheel tubs. I had a few options on completing the tubs, but I wanted to retain the functioning factory fold down rear seat AND increase the rear wheel width to 11" or wider. There are kits available allowing the frame rails to be notched and wheel tubs to weld into the factory spot weld locations of the outer wheel well, but those kits would not allow me to use the factory fold down seat. So, I cut out the original wheel wells leaving a few inches of extra metal near the middle of the wheel well, then cut a new factory wheel well to overlap in the center. I will weld a continuous bead on the tub inside the car and around the trunk floor to avoid losing any structural integrity since removing the inner wheel well also removes the lip to which the wheel well and frame rails weld to the floor.

I ran out of time and was not able to finish welding everything, but this is where I stopped.

BlackMachOne

I had a change of plans with the rear end; I wanted the rear end to be as narrow as possible to allow the biggest outer dish possible on the custom wheels. The Lincoln disc brake rear end that is pretty much 100% done is not able to be narrowed. I only have about 1/4" of clearance from the backside of the caliper to the rear end u-bolts. I wanted to narrow the rear end 1.5" on each side, so this obviously wont work. Sucks since my dad and I have spent a good amount of time on this rear end between cleaning it up and welding on the Ride Tech upper control arm brackets.

So, here is the new plan. I am going back to my stock rear end. The housing has already been sandblasted. I have purchased a back bone brace, billet fill cap and drain plug and new big ford CNC housing ends from Quick Performance. My stock 9" rear end was a 28 spline limited slip, but I have purchased a 31 spline posi unit and new Richmond 3.70 ring and pinion gears. I will be ordering custom length 31 spline Moser axles once the housing is narrowed.

I also found an amazing deal on a brand new 4 piston, 12,19" rear Wilwood brake kit. The rear disc conversions on the old Mustangs can be a pain because of the parking brake, but I just so happened to find this kit on Corral.net that has a built in parking brake behind the rotor hat specifically for the ford rear ends that previously used drum brakes. The only issues with the kit was that it used new style housing ends. My housing ends are old style, but since I am cutting the ends off anyway to narrow the housing, for $65 I just ordered the new CNC ends form Quick Performance.

The only downfall is the calipers are black rather than red but I can easily paint them to match the front. This brake kit will be replaced one day with a 14" Wilwood kit to match the front.

My Mach 1 is the same year same paint scheme. I'm new on this forum looking for build ideas. My radiator is leaking so I'm looking for a good replacement that will leave plenty of roomy for cooling a higher power motor down the road. Which do you have in this?
