View Full Version : How many of you guys corner balanced your cars while dialing in the alignment?

this is something i have been seriously looking into getting done and i found a few euro race shops who do Porsche and Lotus who can do it they said. still not sure these guys can configure a custom built muscle car or if they will set the car up thinking its a Porsche making the car feel worse.

now i am not planning to do any competitive racing with my car as i enjoy street use and the occasional track day with friends. However i am always up to improve on any car if its possible,

the one thing that concerns me is people say when you corner weight a car the fender gap on all 4 corners will be different and for aesthetics and show guys it looks awful. im not sure how much of a noticeable change this can make but would like to hear some feedback. the EURO guys have their cars slammed to the floor so any change isn't very visible to the eye.

Now another concern i had is if you pre-load one coilover much more than the opposite side to balance your weights how do you balance out your compression and rebound on each side perfectly so the car feels balanced and not too soft or hard on one side?

lastly does corner balancing make a substantial difference in the dynamics of a solid axle pro touring car? is it even worth it?

I can't answer all of your questions, but I did attempt to do this on my car. I did it with height measurements instead of scales, but I have had my car on scales twice. The first time, after first getting the car on the road and doing a 'height'-based scaling, the numbers were surprisingly close to where I would want them (side to side, front to back). This last time was a lot more problematic. I have lowered the car about 1/2", and the car didn't react the way we expected as we made adjustments. After about 2 hours, we were within 1/8" at the 4 corners with me sitting in it, and I called it a day.

I will get a set of scales and weigh the corners after I do some upcoming work, since I will likely need to reset the heights. If you have access to the scales, I think it's worthwhile.

My car dropped about 9/16" at the left rear wheel with me in it. The front left was about 7/16", the right rear was about 3/16", and the front left almost not at all. I set the heights with me sitting in it to be about equal, so yes, it's slightly off when I get out. But if you can look at one side then go to the other and have it be 'obvious', I would be shocked.

I use them more to eliminate jacking and preload during set up.

I've checked my 4 corner balance while on the rack but did not go through the gyrations at the time to dial it in better. I've got my car sitting square and pretty well balanced (as good as a true street car will get anyway) empty, but when I sit in it the left side drops about a half inch.

To really dial it in I first need to raise the driver side a half inch or so front and rear, then 4 corner weigh it to adjust the corner balance, then align, then 4 corner weigh it again and adjust, then check alignment again.

What you will find is changing one adjustment affects the rest etc etc...

I chose to not spend the money on the shop hourly rate at the time as it was pretty close and I carry a passenger with me on the track most of the time. Next time around I'll raise the driver side, then go about adjusting the corner weights and alignments with me in the car. It'll be minute adjustments but I do believe they will help when looking for that last little bit of dialing a car in just right.

I do corner balance my Race Car, but it is a Porsche. Someone that knows how to do Corner Balancing can do any car correctly (my guy does Front Engine, Mid Engine & Rear Engine Cars)

guys does this make a substantial difference in the cars handling dynamics on the street and occasional track day to be worth doing this? the shop quote me $600+ to do my car

We do it on every car that has coil overs on all 4 corners both before the alignment to get it close then again after to fine tune it. I would say it makes ALL the difference

It matters. It is a massive improvement. Even a street car will feel more balanced when done correctly.

If you use adjustable height coil overs why not use scales and scale car out with driver and 1/2 tank (capacity wise not gauge wise) of fuel. Spare and other sundries added to car. Then have precision alignment done. I set up an ACR Neon on year for friend, next year I had 27 of them. We had all the specs, even though they couldnt adjust corners we atleast had more info. One guy even went so far as to add weight to each corner to even it out. Never heard if it helped.
