Just picked up a LQ4 with 317 heads. I want to build this on a budget, as my ex is getting too much of my hard earned money so I'm having to do this on a budget, hahaha.

I have a F1R I want to use, as it was off my old motor. I wanted to get ideas of cam, intake, etc I should be looking at for this. I have read some of the posts about heads lifting at higher boost levels. I was thinking of running somewhere in the 15-20psi level if possible on Meth. Should I pull heads and run head studs?

Like I said I just got the motor and pulled the intake off, thats about it so far, so I got some time to get this all setup how I want it. This will be more of a street car but will see occasional track time.

My old motor was a 468BBC with the F1R on meth, ran high 9's. I have to sons that love going in this car to dinner, ice cream etc.. This old setup wasn't as good for fun rides with my sons, they are 5 and 7... So want a driveable Procharged LS... :)

Thoughts? I've spent a lot of time over the last several months trying to compile a parts list ofwhat I think I want to get, do, etc... But then I read about something else and I want to change it. So I'm coming to the ones that have done this before, rather than try to re-invent the wheel...

you will need head studs and a good head gasket..I run cometics mine and it seals great.. better the ls9s and fits better too.. also, do yourself a favor and have the heads checked to be perfectly level.. very slight wrappage and the heads will push water or pressurize your cooling system at 20 + psi

So I'm leaning towards the Kooks Headers 6451, 1 7/8" primaries and 3" collectors for LS swap with Kooks Motor Mounts Part# LS1-60017-KIT anybody have any feedback on that setup? And for a cam I have been given a recommendation on LS1tech of this http://shop.brutespeed.com/Brute-Speed-Forced-Induction-Camshaft-FREE-SHIPPING-Brute-Speed-Camshaft.htm

thoughts? Ideas? Etc..

Thanks everybody!!

Also adding meth inject, and looking at keeping the 317 heads, and getting an intake or running the L92/ls2 intake setup. Does anybody have any thoughts on either or? N why?

meth is the only way to go.. its cheap and simple and allows for some much more boost and less higher end parts to make up for the octane levels..

Ok so after searching around and talking/reading alot, I have begun looking at the L92 heads and the L76 intake, for approx $1800 I can have assembled heads and intake with throttle body, injectors, etc. and it looks to be a great combo and a definite upgrade to my stock 317's and still need and intake. Thoughts? I know I will need to change the springs on the valves to handle the larger cam, but is there something I'm missing? Seems like some great gains for the minimal cash....

When dealing with blower cars, Heads and cams are worthless... Use whatever you have and if you are not happy with the power, pulley down for $100 till you get there..

I know you mentioned Kooks, but the new Hooker LS swap headers are nice. Holley EFI if it's in the cards.

Hey all, quick update. I got the complete LS swap setup. Right now I'm awaiting my cam to show up, it's the one I have on the link above. Also got the headers coming in their 'darkside' collection, so black coated. Also looking at stock lq4 intake and keeping stock heads just doing a quick cleanup and putting new valve springs on for the larger cam. Also putting new pushrods and timing chain. Figured might as well while I'm here. :). It's a slow process unfortunately but it's moving along. The holidays helped tho!

That thing should suck birds off trees with that blower on it!

Great progress thus far. The Lq4 can lead the F1R to greatness but it will be at the top to mid range where she really flies. You may miss that big block torque, however hooking up may be easier.

I am glad you are keeping the 317 heads, they have shown time and time again to be awesome as is. Brian Tooley makes an in house valve spring good for .660 lift and have an incredibly low failure rate (per BTR) My build is similar to yours somewhat but I am going with a turbo (BW S400SX75) and an LY6 (picture L92 heads on an LQ9 but from the factory) with a 4L80E.

A good meth injection kit, custom cam and head studs may be non-negotiable for your supercharged dreams.

Make sure you access LS1tech often for your questions. A lot of guys have already done what you are trying to do so why not copy what works?
