This is the best I could do with photoshop right now. My girlfriend and I have been working on this paint scheme for several days now. I feel it will give me everything I have ever wanted in a single paint job.
Here are as many details as I can think of so far for the Illusion paint scheme.
Top will be black with silver pearl in the clear coat.
Bottom will be 2005-2006 Viper SRT10 Silver with silver in the clear coat.
The orange divider line will be some sort of incredible bright pearl orange and the flame in the middle will be also.
The word Illusion will be in pearl orange only as ghost lettering. The ghost lettering will have pearl orange running off the lettering as flames. This should be barely visible to the nake eye unless the sun is out.
Here is a render Carter did!! 3/06/06

I wouldnt do a silver clear over the black as it sometimes looks 'hazed' or dull. If you want it black, go black, if you want it somewhat dull go black with a 60% semi-gloss clear.I like the scheme though.

I dont want straight black. Thats what im trying to avoid. I have seen cars with metal flake and pearl in the black and it looks sick. I appreciate the feedback and glad you like the scheme.

I may be wrong here but did you say silver in the clear?
I think that would be a problem
With a metal flake like silver in clear coat....when you cut and buff it, it will cause problems your clear will have specs in it!
CAMAROBOY69
09-22-2005, 12:38 PM
Silver pearl and orange pearl. The last few coats of clear will be just straight clear that way I dont burn thru to the pearl or metal flake when I sand and buff the clear coat. As long as the last few coats of clear are just straight clear I will be fine. I just painted a car with this method about 2 or 3 months ago. :)

ok, that will definatly give the black some depth! be careful too much pearl will become milky!

Why not just use the '04 (?) STi black? It's got tons of pearl/flake in it already. Plus, it's a factory color, so you wouldn't have problems matching it later if you changed your hood, or got scratch here or there, etc. I'm going to use this color when I repaint my Tahoe in a few years.

If anyone could tell me what color orange this is, I would greatly appreciate it!! This is the color we are painting my girlfriends 67 Mustang coupe and the stripe on my Camaro.

Great idea Ralph!! I took one for a test drive over the summer and forgot about how nice that silver was. Great idea. I will consider it for sure.

WOW! That oranges has zest!. Looks like a good concept. I would lose the name on the outside and put it somewhere else like the headrests or valvecovers or something like that.

stay away from putting pearl on top of the black unless it is in a clear basecoat, and flash times must be followed. i would like ralph said use a factory black with pearl, there are many variations, none silver i know of but plenty of golds, blue etc. as for the silver i am not sure what you are wanting by adding silver pearl to clear coat???? just use a silver with bigger metalic in it so you get the sparkle i assume you are looking for. make your life easy, you drive the car, scratches/dings will happen, and have fun matching anything custom up, espeically if you do not do this everyday and the air supply is not regualted as closely etc.
you can get what your looking for in factory basecoats, take the time to look thru some.
keep it simple and you can achieve what you are wanting with adding all this silver pearl/flake and pearl and flake give 2 completely different effects

The orange looks like HOK Sunset Pearl. I would NEVER use ANY pearl over black, it ALWAYS ruins it. If you want black metalic, buy black metalic. It is certain that what sounds good on paper will make the ugliest color in the history oif the world.

Nice work on the photochop. I like the scheme a lot... since it was a good challenge, I thought I'd give it a go too, just for kicks. BTW, to get the silver to look more silver, up the contrast a bit in addition to simply lightening it. Here's my version:

Thanks again for all the feedback and information. You know I will be talking to you quite a bit Jake. Did you ever get me a paint code for the orange? :)
Thanks Buddha for updating that pic with a little more silver. Looks a LOT better than my crappy photoshop.
I will probably get ahold of Kris Horton to have him do a render for me. I just have the software to do it and he is just soo damn good.

Check out www.oldschoolflake.com We use there products quite a bit and are very impressed.
They have a special pearl designed for black and dark colors. No special equipment needed to apply just mix in your first layer of clear and call it done. The pearl flakes are very small we use 1 more clear coat that normal when finishing the job. Your going to need to same quite a bit to get the panels flat just be prepared. A little goes a long way test disks are your friend when using pearls. Good Luck you won't be disappointed.

I like everything but having the letters painted on the rear. With such a sleek and killer looking paint scheme, don't cheapen the effect with a logo or letters on it.
Just get some custom license plates with the name.

I have to say that I also don't care for the logo. It seems to cheapen the look of the car. Makes me think of Hot Wheels or something from the 60's drag racing era.
No offense!

I appreciate the feedback. The logo isnt an absolute must but if it was on there I would make it almost invisible. Mabey I could replace it with some ghost flames coming off the orange flame. Just another idea. Mabey Kris and I can work on it and figure something out. This is just a start of the official paint scheme.

I would have to agree. Someone else said to make the flames smaller. That makes sense also. The stripes or flames should accent the car not overpower it.
If the car is done correctly, they will remember it's name. In other words, the car should speak for it's self.
There is good ideas coming from the board. Smart move to ask for input. My two cents.

BINGO! Keep it simple and clean Adam, '69 Camaros don't need much help in the flashy paint department. I'd use that orange line, but make the flames small and subtle like an accent. You'll find several of the top pin-stripe artists add a nice subtle flame or design into their lines, and its a time-proven winner.
Might look even cleaner just to use the line, but put the flame at the tail of the line, just coming off the back of it. Maybe about 2" tall by 6" long.

Here you go Adam, I photoshopped what I was thinking. Just make the rear of the stripe turn into some cool flames to accent the car. Less distracting, and worth super bonus points on the trick factor.

As always I disappear from the board over the weekend. I read all the replies this morning. I decided I will delete "Illusion" from the side of the car. I will probably have a plate made or I will have the word ILLUSION cut out of aluminum or stainless for the back. More than likely just a license plate with the name.
Now for the orange flame. Tonys idea is ok but I will probably stick to having the flame in the middle mabey smaller. I definetly dont like the flame in the front of the car like DarkBuddha pictured. No offense but I definely dont want anything in the front like that.
Thanks again for the feedback.

No offense taken... I do that kinda stuff 'cause it's fun to try. I try things, even stuff I don't like, just to see the possibilities. Some folks like flames, others not so much, and there are so many possibilities, sometimes I just don't know if something will be totally cool or completely lame until I chop it up. I figure we've gotta try some different stuff every now and again, otherwise we end up with more TT2 shod red '69 Camaros. I'm even worried the 2 tone thing is becoming too popular and the next "new" thing will be triple tone done on the verticle axis... oh wait, AMC did that already.

So wear does the orange parting line hang? Does it sit inboard of the fender creases? Stradle the fender creases? Or hang off the outboard side of the fender creases?

09-26-2005, 11:01 AM
2 tone.... or flames, not both. Gets too busy, like the mini truck guys who have scallops, flames and tribal crap, pick a theme and stick too it. I love the colors though.

See 2 posts down for comparisons.
For the top half- forget adding pearl to the black basecoat. Use Chrysler's black metallic- code PXR. The photochops look good. My favorite is Tony's.

Here is the angled view with sorta what Tony was thinking with the flame at the rear instead of the front like 1 post up. Hmmm both look damn good to me! :bananna2:
EDIT: There are 3 different versions right here.
1. my idea 2. Similar to Tony but has dip in middle 3. Tony idea
go with 2 it looks the best...imo

Nine Ball

The '69 has a natural dip in the middle, but don't over-accentuate it. Just stripe the exact body line there.
I just thought of an even cooler idea to add flames, put the orange stripe on as a solid line, and put some barely visible ghost flames on the lower portion silver area on the front. Maybe have the flames reach all the way to the back of the car, but just in the silver portion. Those could be done in an orange pearl clearcoat over the silver.

Thank you for the feedback everyone. I will keep looking at those and might even throw those paint schemes on a car in Forza to get a better feel of how they would look from every angle.
Tony since your speaking of flames. Check out the original paint scheme I was going to do in ghost flames. I drew this over a year ago but decided it would kill the Camaro body lines even in ghost flames. As you can tell ive been dying to do flames on something.

there is a black 68 Camaro drag car here in Houston that is black with bright green flames like the one you drew, the flames reach from the front to the back. That car looks wicked, whoever did the flames was a true artist. I probably have pics of it, but they are at home and I am offshore now.
For another idea, look for that two-tone silver/blue 1st Gen firebird that was on Power Tour last year. Attached photos

Some 90's GM cars had black with silver or grey metalic. There are some Honda cars that had redish pearl in the black. :firefire: Faint but way cool. FRANK

That thing looks awesome! I am still in painters block about what I want to do.
Just remember that when looking at OEM paint that it will not look as good as when you do it since you will color sand/buff. That can make the OEM paints look a little different from their cars to yours.

Beryllium is a Saleen colour produced by BASF and is exclusive to them....you can't buy it. In fact, if you have a Saleen in that colour, you have to pay them to come out and re-paint the car.
