Hey guys, I am fairly new on here and have looked around for answers, I just haven't been able to find exactly what I am looking for though. I am 17 and still learning about everything, as seen in some of my older posts, feeling stupid with some of my questions haha! Anyways, I have had my 81' Z28 for over a year now, I bought it running and driving last May Long Weekend. Drove 7 hours to buy it and drove it home. I am thinking of starting a build thread on it all, I'm excited to get it rolling more. I took the year to really drive the car, and get a good feel for it, and find the direction I wanted to go. I really fell in love with the pro-touring builds, built with budget, and built to drive. I know I am going on and on, I have a bunch of questions for anyone with lots of experience who could help me answer my questions and push me in the right direction. Anyways, I bought the car for $5000, in May 2013. The car had around $6500 worth of work done, including engine rebuild and modification, and a bunch of other mechanical work done. In addition came with a set of gold trans am wheels, which were on the car, and a set of massive corvette turbine wheels. I have the bill with everything that was done to the car, but it doesn't tell me what all was done modification wise to the motor. From getting in contact with the owner, I know it was bored out, changed crank, "fancy pistons", and a beefy racing cam. I have tried countless times to get in contact with the shop that did the work to see if they have a record of the work, but no luck :guilty:. The previous owner said that bored 30 or 40 over sounds familiar. With the bore, and bigger crank, is it safe to assume that this could be a 383 build?? Same with the "fancy pistons", possibly forged??? I am really trying to get ahold of the shop, but still nothing. Is there anything that i can do to check these things? Carb is a rebuild of the stock Rochester Quadrajet, but was done extremely poorly. Tons of hours tuning and adjusting, still can't get it to run properly. So I have a Holley Ultra Street Avenger ordered, with pickup tomorrow, so quite excited about that.

All hoses and wired are new on the motor but look like they were just thrown on to get it done, it's a mess! So any tips on relocating items and wires to clean up the engine bay??

As far as body and interior goes, there is the usual rust along the bottom of the quarters and the rear of the car, as well as the bottom of the fenders. I can have the car in body and paint by the end of the summer. I am debating on what to do first, suspension or body work?

I have narrowed my suspension choice down to the Ridetech Level 2 CoilOver System. The kit says there is a 2" drop all around, so now my worry is proper fitment with the wheels and tires. I have 18 x 8 wheels with 255/40/r18 tires on all 4 corners. As far as I know the offset is 0 from the websites specs.

I am worried with the 2" drop that I will have fitment issues. Is there certain modifications that I will need to do? After measuring and looking last night, it looks like the rears will be good, the front, it looks like I may need to do some modifications to the inner fender, and the fender lips. Should I do suspension first before the body? Or body before suspension? What else should I be looking at when deciding?

Hopefully I have given enough information to help answer some of my questions, I can include photos and everything as well if needed. I probably will throw in some photos anyway to show some of these things I have explained.

i have the same vehicle.... and personally i would do your suspension first.. get the stance and ride height your looking for before you put down paint.. that way if you have fitment issues you can cut/weld/shape/hammer anything into place without nicking a brand new paint job...make sure that you check the floor boards as the front of the vehicle inside and underneath the car...start there and then work your way around the car. hoses... trim off what you don't need and wire harnesses i ran behind the fender wells.. as far as i'm aware... you should be able to fit a 275 tire all the way around... personally i have 275 in the rear and a 245 in the front which will be flipped to a 275 as soon as my LS swap is finished. take your time and think everything out... nothing is worse than doing things twice because if its not done right its not worth doing it at all. questions or concerns... just holler... everyone on here are more than willing to help.

Thanks man, I am in no way a body guy, so I am going to work with a professional, and learn along the way. So I am going to get his opinion on the suspension and stuff first as well. Do you happen to know all of the wheel specs to fit 275's on all 4 corners? Offset, backspace, and all that? Thanks!

Thanks for the info, I'll have to keep that in mind when I get to a new wheel package! I'm gonna have to send you a private message man!

Well went to the shop the other day, and I was recommended the wrong carb for my motor. They told me with a 383 I can get away with a 770 cfm carb, but because I don't know exactly what my motor is yet, they recommended the Edelbrock 650 cfm Thunder series. So saved some money and went with that carb. Hopefully will have the install done today! Excited to have the motor running properly finally! I'll throw up some pictures when I get it all cleaned up and installed!

There are no stupid questions. Well, mostly none. I don't have any great answers for yours right now but this forum is a plethora of knowledge.
