I'm in the process of mounting the evap unit in my factory A/C '68 Camaro. Instructions say to use a bolt through a hole in the firewall cover to support the unit through the firewall. It threads into a captive nut on the evap case. I've smoothed the firewall so I'm not using the kit supplied cover and really do not want to have a bolt head in the center of my smoothed firewall.

I'm thinking of making a bracket inside of the firewall to support the evap case. What have others done about this?

I took a piece of 16 gauge steel about 3" wide and came off of the cowl on the under side of the dash. I bent it so that the part that mounted to the cowl was about 2'' long. I screwed it to the underside.
The screws can be painted on the outside to match the cowl under the cowl panel. The part that hangs down has to be plum with the evaporator case. Measure and mark for the captive nut. Drill a hole for the bolt and mount it. You may have to grind a little off of the boly head thickness.
Hope this helps,

Thanks guys. I did basically what Shannon did except I came up from the floor with a similar assembly.

I did the same as Shannon and made a small bracket. I only made mine about 3 inches long and attached it to the back of the AC Unit :

I put 2 bends in the bracket to put a little space between the box and the firewall

I then welded a bolt through the firewall to slip the bracket on. There is just enough room above the AC box to install a lock washer/nut. Thebolt head just under the new bolt is the original AC mounting hole. I'm temporarily using it as a ground point for welding.
