View Full Version : Opinions: Best 69' F-Body Subframe/Rear
PD-1969

I would like to get some opinions about what the best suspension set-up is for the 69' F-body. The car will mainly be a road car but will be used on occasion for auto-x and track driving. It will probably have a LS3, LS7 or, LSA with 500-650 HP, backed by a T-56. I am considering DSE/AME/Speedtech or possibly a full frame from Roadster Shop or Street Rod Garage. Price is not a factor in what my decision will be, but I just want to pick the best product for how I will be driving my car and I don't want to go overboard with a set-up that will not be fully utilized. Thanks for your opinions.

We also offer a full frame for these, which require less fabrication than others. Feel free to PM me or email

I think the new AME IRS is going to be the new benchmark by the sounds of it.

I highly recommend Art Morrison subframes.
I’ve got a Lateral Dynamics rear suspension for sale in the parts forum. Same suspension as Bad penny and the one lap Camaro.

I still remember when Mary Pozzi said that after driving our '69 with the proto IRS at Willow Springs. It felt nice to have 3 years of hard work validated by that.
Every subframe has their advantages. Personally I like using OEM lightweight aluminum C7 arms with OEM C6 knuckles as it opens up lots opens up upgrades down the road and takes advantage of the high dollar engineering GM can apply to their components. High load capacity hubs, monoball bushings, etc can all be used with our subframe when the need arises. For the rear, our subframe fits the factory floor and significantly increases stiffness. When you combine the front and rear subframes with connectors, you have a extremely rigid and lightweight structure.

Don`t forget to consider the offerings from Chassisworks too. They run from just good competent basic sub frame/4 link systems to their all out gStreet SEMA car package with full frame rails , new floors/inner rockers etc. to allow for proper travel and ground clearance with rocker heights as low as 4". A nicely optioned gStreet subframe and gLink rear suspension with double adjustable coil overs and gConnector structure package to connect them together is less than $9K. http://scandc.com/new/node/806
If you want to get more exotic you can opt for quad adjustable remote reservoir coil overs, full frame rails, Fab9 cambered full floater rear axle and/or the just being released gStreet billet uprights. This new spindle uses larger than ZR1 Corvette hub/bearing packs, uber beefy construction and huge, purpose built delrin race pivot ball assemblies in lieu of cheap OE style ball joints. This is in stark contrast to the disposable OE C5/C6 spindles with their tiny, non replaceable upper ball joints. Bumpsteer is adjustable and the spindle is part of a wide track package that widens the track of the car 1.5" per side for improved scrub radius, better tire clearance and easier fitment with modern wheels. Pretty slick.

marcus,
After looking at your link, I have a few questions:
i thought chassisworks had had a crossmember for a 4L80e trans that worked for the 1st gen camaro?
is the price on your website for the value, optioned or pro-touring version of the front sub frame?

We do make a 4L80 crossmember but it's relatively new. It's an option with any Camaro clip package and Mark can get you what you need. You can see all the different trans crossmember options here: http://www.cachassisworks.com/c-157-trans-crossmembers-direct-fit.aspx
