Has anyone swapped a '98 or newer f-body rear end in to a first gen f-body or even a 70-81 into a first gen fbody? If so what is needed to do this?

Why would you want one? The 98-02's are junk.....the gov-lock is worthless

Because you can get em cheap with posi and 3.42 gears. Or I could rebuild my 10 bolt 8.2 pontiac rear.

Not worth it for a weak 7.5" setup. Get the LS1 brakes, but nothing else is useful. And then there's the fact that the 4th gen rearends are a fair amount wider. A quick Google search tells me a 1st gen has a 60" wide rearend, and a 4th gen has roughly a 65" rearend, so you lose 2.5" offset per side. Would look pretty odd for wheel selection.

The rear end found under most third and fourth gen Camaros were first used under Vegas and Monzas, and the newer ones are only slightly stronger.
Still want one?

If you were to do it, you need all new brackets. The 3rd/4th gens have a 3 link w/panhard bar and torque arm.
My 500hp TA has withstood a lot of abuse using a '00 SS with a torsen diff, and a friend of mine with a 02 TA has sprayed his on drag radials and has not blown the rear end up ever.. Stock one. They're not bad but in a first gen it doesn't make sense

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll be rebuilding my rear end. So this may be a dumb question but I'm looking at putting in a relatively stock LS1 with a T-56, do you use a stock t-56 yoke to a cut down original drive shaft or do you have to modify the drive shaft to get it to work with the t-56 yoke. I'm new to this LS stuff and still trying to figure out these little things.

You can't modify the yoke- you'll have to modify the shaft.
