Good Morning All,
I would like to introduce myself my name is Marty. I have been working on this project for the last couple years. This truck was supposed to be a daily driver as my other Syclone is one of the Ten trucks that Marlboro Cigarettes gave away in a contest in 1991.
I purchased a Sonoma GT so I could build it to drive. However with all projects they sometime start with good intentions and then end up on a completely different path.
Currently the truck is at the chassis shop having the complete back half redone so we can fit the new tires. 295 45 20. The chassis is going to be set at 6 1/4 in the rear and 5 3/4 in the front at it's lowest point. Front Suspension is by Air Ride and the rear suspension was hand fabricated by Dave at Competition Fabrication ( www.compfab.com (http://www.compfab.com/) ) . The rendering was done by Bob Thrash at Rad Rides by Troy. All of the other idea's have come from me. I have searched the Internet over the last four or five years studying everyone else builds and idea's. I have learned so much from Forums like this and the bad part is it has cost me so much money because I want to emulate most of the idea's that i've seen.
The build of this truck is broken down into 24 stages and I hope to have it completed for the 2007 Power Tour.
Currently the truck mods include:
18 x 8 & 20 x 10 Billet Specialties Wheels
BF Goodrich KDW-2 Tires
Currie Aluminum 9"
Wilwood Disk Brakes
Vintage Air
Billet Specialties Serpentine System (wow is this a nice piece)
4.3l All Aluminum Twin Turbo V6
4L80E Transmission
Big Stuff 3 w/Trans Controller
8 Point Roll Cage
Recovered Factory Interior in Viper Leather and Suede
There are so many other mods that I can't even list them all.
here are a few pics.

Hey Marty! Welcome to the site!
Don't know if you remember me or not but I met you at Woodward a few years back with the Sy Ty guys and then talked with you in Indy at this years Power Tour. The GT is looking good! Can't wait to see this one finished. I'll have to forward this link over to Mike Kutchy so he can see the progress. What are you going to paint it? A marlboro replica paintjob would probably look pretty cool!
Keep us posted on the build!

Marty! That is sharp!!! I'm really likeing the 2-tone with the red on top. Are you putting full Syclone cladding down the side or sticking with the GT skirt? I just sent the link off to Mike. I really like how the split leather reupolstered seat looks too. I'm going to be droolin each time you post a project up date!! LOL

I sent him an e-mail last night telling him that now my back brakes looked like dookie and he didn't have the Courage to call me back today. He had Billy call me back and talk to me about upgrading the rear brakes to either 13" or 14".
Man i just can't spend any more money on this truck. Even if i removing the old stuff and selling it off to pay for the upgrade.
But is sure would look nice to have matching 14" rotors in the rear.

Travis - from what i've learned you are correct. This truck is more of a late model Street Rod instead of a corner carver. I am a big fan of Street Rods and i wanted to make something a little different. Plus the big 30" tall tire on the rear won't handle that good.
The other thing that was a big consideration was the fact i wanted you only to see my rear end when you looked under the tailgate.
So in the end lower and longer is better.
Here is an example.

Packaging was the main reason. I relied completely on Dave my chassis guy to make it work. He has about 20 years of experience so i have to trust him. However please tell me what you think I would love to hear your comments that is the only way I can learn more.
sinned
09-22-2005, 06:00 PM
Well, depending on the front design the roll center is probably somewhere in the 0-3" range (assuming your guy is as good as you claim), the rear has to be at least 18" based on the pics, probably more. Typical rear roll centers on a stock chassis average 10-16" or so and most guys that do any sort of chassis mods will lower it to the 8-10" range. Your S10 chassis stock RRCH was probably 10"; you have almost doubled it by moving the PHB so high. I guess for a fairgrounds cruiser the "wow" factor is cool but I think you are after more than that and just questioned the positioning now rather than when it is complete and much more difficult to move if you so decided.
syborg tt
09-22-2005, 07:02 PM
okay i think i understand what you are saying. So what would your suggestions be at this point. Move the panhard bar similar to the above pics.
The truck is mostly going to be a blvd cruiser not a race truck or a track truck. With the suspension in the current set up what kind of ride can i expect ??
ps still trying to learn more (thanks for the help i appreciate it)
sinned
09-22-2005, 07:45 PM
Oh, I think it will ride fine, lowering the PHB will make cornering feel much more stable. If you could mount the PHB to run across the back of the diff cover (pretty much the standard PHB mounting configuration) which should lower it's height by a solid 10".
syborg tt
09-23-2005, 07:06 AM
I have a couple more question if you don't mind.
Currently installed on the rear suspension is an anti-roll bar that allows very little deflection of the rear dif. How will this effect this current set up ?
The question is the fact that i have a 30.5" tall rear tire with a 26" tall tire in the front. Will changing to the suspension change much, or will it only be a slight improvement. Either way i am strongly considering moving the Panhard Bar.

Originally I was going to go with a custom set of 12" rotors and then they talked me into a one off kit. They said don't worry we will take care of you. So I said "OKAY" and closed my eye's and patiently waited. I just received the pics on Wednesday and i am still waiting on all of the details. All I can tell you so far is they had to custom make a hub for the conversion and they are 14.1" Zinc Coated Rotors with the Dynalite Calipers.

Moving the PHB form above the axle to behind the diff cover will make a nticeable difference in handling. I wouldn't worry about the tall tires much, we have 3 KW's with 425/65R22.5's and those things corner better than most cars. It's all about making things work together.

please tell me how I determine the this range. The chassis is bone stock in the front with Air Ride Suspension.By plotting the x,y,z measurements of the front LCA forward and rear pivots, front UCA forward and rear pivots, upper and lower ball joints, vehicle C.L., wheelbase and track width (all measurements at desired ride height) will get you close. Once all that data is in you can determine your FRCH is and what you need to do to move to the height desired (anything above the ground is O.K.).
Yes, this will require a program or a mathematical genius.

MuscleRodz
09-24-2005, 07:24 PM
I think most Wilwood systems are designed around manual brakes. With the monster brakes you have and possibly a sub 3000 lb truck, I would stick to manual for under hood space.

I run manual brakes, I like the pedal feel. With 14" rotors you should no problem finding a m/c that provides a good feel/short throw balance.

Dude, early 90's S10, what?! :) Wicked. I did read S10 chassis, but I've heard of people using S10 chassis' on old rides.
Very interesting.
Yeah, very new to the "how" of Pro-Touring, but have loved it since I first started seeing Pro-Tour themed cars. They're my favorite. I've been into import cars for the past 5 years and recently traded my '95 Civic for a '94 Mustang GT 5 speed with some bolt-ons. Anyway, an S10 is probably a pretty affordable base car to start with.
How much do you think your ride will cost by the time is done and painted and driving? Is it possible to do for under $10k to $15k. I am a poor family man living in expenso so-cal. Anyway, I think I started high jacking this.
Can you post some pics of the exterior of your truck? You have more pics you could email me

i'm shooting for march/april next year. It all depends on a bunch of things happening in the near future.
1. Finishing the truck at the current fab
2. Finishing all the plumbing at my shop/garage
3. Hauling it to Detroit and getting it acid dipped and e-coated
4. Getting it back together and hauling it home.
5. Not making anymore changes to the build

12-03-05 Update
Dave mounted the air system while I was on Vacation and it looks exactly like I wanted to look.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
It's mounted on a tubular chassis so it will remain on the chassis when the cab and the bed are removed
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here is the top view
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
You can see my idea for the bed and I couldn't be happier with it.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
This is the frame work that will support the new bed floor.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Brakes - What can i say. Precisions Brakes did and awesome job on them. This is the final front brake caliper and it is an exact match for the rear caliper something we need it we are going to show the truck.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Rear Brakes going on.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The exhaust is almost finished all we need to do is cut the end of the tailpipe.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
You can see the transition from the round to oval tailpipe. I think Dave did and incredible job joining the two pieces.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
If we need, we will now be able to remove the mufflers.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Moving on to the front suspension. I installed the Bear Tracker Tie Rod ends and sleeve. What a nice piece.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
A quick picture of the trans pan installed and check for clearance issue's
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I saved the best for last "the Wheels". The tool that we used for mock up was perfect. It nailed the offset on the front wheels on the first try. I can't wait to do another truck.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here is what the truck is going to look like when the air suspension is deflated.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
There is a minor vlave stem clearence issue which can easily be resolved with a set of low profile valve stems from Weld Wheels.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
No clearence issues on the rear wheel.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
we decided to go with the sticky outy look on the wheels.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
No really once the tires are mounted we will narrow the rear diff.
That's it for this week. I've got a bunch of parts to order and I need to get the wheels back to Billet Specialties so they can weld them up for me.

I SS tubing looks nice as does a regular style hose with the new shrink wrap stlye hose clamps
Plain hose with Python clamps is tab, SS is garbage, a solid polished piece with bits of rubber at either end is nifty...

01-14-06 Update - Making room for the new Firewall and Wheel Wells
Well, worked on the truck a little this weekend with a good Friend Paul.
Paul came along to help with the future firewall modifications. Should be very interesting couple weeks.
You really can't tell from this picture but we raised the motor up at least an 1.5"
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Which meant the floor got it the way - more will cut out later

Dave made a couple mock up pieces for the center section of the firewall last week.
He wanted to make sure it was exactly what i wanted before he went any further on the Firewall. Seems he was afraid of a fourth Firerwall.

Here you can see the two mock up pieces so we could decide which we liked better. We choose to go with the 1 1/8" deep version.

Okay it's been a very long week. My little one got sick and my wife and i spent the entire week taking care of her. Seems that a stomach bug can turn into phenomena. Crazy huh.
Well back to our regular build updates. My oldest Daughter and i went to the chassis shop to install the engine and headers to make sure everything was centered up again. We have some minor adjusting to do on the heades to square everything up.
Last week Dave finished up the Remote Wiper Install.and mounted the Big Stuff.

Dave also created a steel mock up of the factory Dash.
We are going to remove 1" out of the bottom to make it just a little smaller then factory.

It's Amazing how much room is under the dash is you remove all the plastic junk behind the pad.

Happy Friday man has this been a tough week. Long Story !!
Dave made the dash panel it's amazing how close to factory it looks.
We made a couple Cluster Housing Surrounds I should have some more pics on Saturday.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The dash is actually 1" Shorter then the factory dash.
Hard to tell from the pics but the P-Side is one inch lower the D-Side from the Factory.
We decided to make the dash the same height from left to right.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Hard to tell from the pics but the all of the radius bends in the truck match.
I plan to have my Buddy Opie come out and help plan the Radio/Navagation in the dash.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
My goal is to make sure the Dash looks like something the factory could have built.
When you look in the truck I want people to think it's the stock Dash modified.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The motor is finally mounted (tacked) back in place. Dave also evened up everything again.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Yep the string is back.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
You can see the new Motor mounts. I think this is the third Set.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Good Morning All,
I want to thank Guy at Rockford Racecraft for getting my Rods & Pistons for my Motor. I dropped off the Block, Camshaft, Timing Chain & Cover and the Balancer (thank John Waller). So we could get started building the motor.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Dave was only able to spend a couple hours on the truck last week. So not much was done. He was able to get the bracing started behind the dash for the steering column, brake pedal and the vintage air. We are going to put tabs on the rod so we can anchor the wire harness to it to keep the underside of the dash clean.

Here is a close up of the pedal brace

I like the last gauge layout, the different sizes add a bit of a twist to the usual aftermarket gauges on a flat panel theme..
Looking good! :twothumbs

Well, looks like Dave got a bunch of work done this week.
There is a lot more room in the new dash housing then we thought.
I've got a bunch of playing with the dash to get it to look just like I want it but I like this one the most so far.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Side view doesn't look to busy does it.
I can't wait to send the dash to Tom at Hydro Illusions
(( www.hydroillusions.com )) to have him make it look like carbon fiber.
Did you notice the notch in the floor for the exhaust.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Now that we have the steering column back in.
Dave was able to complete the D-Side downpipe.
It has the same feel / flow as the P-Side.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Just a quick shot of the downpipe and Mike Lee's Headers (( www.raceprovenmotors.com ))
Mike does some really nice work if your looking for a really good guy.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
It looks like the Master's are far away from the heat but we may make a heat shield just in case.
Did I mention that these are going to be swapped out for Billet one's?
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The exhaust is joined again for the last time on both sides.
Dave still has to run the wastegate dumps back into the downpipes.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
In order to gain the needed clearance around the intercooler
Dave reworked the lower portion of the core support.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Trying to keep the same theme in the build. We did dual Rails similar to the back half.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here is my one of my favorite shots. Looking down into the engine bay.
I think it looks so much cleaner then before. We also gained the needed inner fender clearance.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Before picture -- just in case you forgot.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Okay I just thought it was a cool picture.
Cough - Cough MSD & Autometer sure would be nice sponsors on this project.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Just playing around again with camera angle's.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Wait -- Look up you can see the trans pan from Bowler Transmissions (( www.bowlertransmissions.com )).

Good Morning All,
Meet with Bob Thrash today and talked about finishing the Rendering of the Interior.
I hope to have some new drawings in two weeks. He's busy painting graphics on the Cuda
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Okay back to the regularly scheduled update
Here is the Final layout for the Dash.
I am flying down to Florida to meet with Doc at www.docskustom.com they are going to make me a billet panel to mount the gauges in. Those guy's down there have been a great help and i really look forward to working with them.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here's the start of new Mount for the Front Support. We want to make the front cover easy to remove.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
It will be slip shaft mounted so i can remove it when i need to get it on a trailer.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Okay don't freek out here - Yep it's a prototype front support (no Brackets)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Wastegates are plumbed back into the downpipes.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Just a quick shot to show how well thought out the Billet Specialties Serp Set up is. Note the A/C lines go down and away vs. straight out.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Dave removed 1" of this pipe to make everything even up front.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Okay here is the last picture of the wiper kit - this is where the shaft needs to come out. You can also see that we are going to fix the A pillar bodyline to match the fenders.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
That's it for this week. Our goals this week is to get the entire exhaust welded. I should have at least one more update this week.

Good Evening all,
Dave took a week off the truck to work on his Front Engine Dragster.
He finally broke into the 5's yes the 5's. He went 5.87 @ 25? mph at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet.
He is now one of the top 4 front engine guy's.

It's on the Ground and i am pumped.
The ride height is dead on and it's low.
This is what the truck looked like when i arrived at 7:30am.
I have a bunch of work to do by 10am when Bob get's here.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Fist thing to do was install the New 14" Rear Brakes from Precision Brakes.
They did a great job on the kit.
What's scarry is they no longer look big to me.

Worked on the front bumper cover this weekend.
Had to modify the mounting tabs to work with a stock steel support.
Step one - Make sure you are wearing the proper safety glasses
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Step two - Carefully remove all of the mounting tabs
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Step Three - Take them to the grinder and reduce there size.
A long sleeve shirt may have prevented my forearms from itching so darn bad.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Step Four - Glass all the tabs back on.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Step Five - Drill the new holes
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Step Six - Run to local Sears and buy Stainless Steel bolts (did i mention i lost the original bolts)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
In the end it's mounted and it only took about 4 hours if you include the trip to Sears Hardware and the trips to the slop sink to wash my arms because they itched so badly.

As far as front brakes - i wanted to go with 15's but they won't fit in a 18" wheel so Precision Brakes built me a custom set of 14" brakes with much larger bore pistons then on the rear. Should stop on a dime.

Happy Saturday Night,
What started out as a very productive day didn't end so well.
Just remember Listen to the Voices in your Head they are there for a Reason!
Yep, found a Lower Radiator Hose that actual works.
It's hard to believe it actual follows the curves of the Frame.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Installed the new Fiberglass Cladding.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
If you are thinking about adding really cool ground effects to your s10.
You need to contact Scott @ www.syclone-typhoon.com
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Yep missing the last piece of cladding this is where my day ended.
Seems I felt the necessary urge to run a 1/4" drill bit 1" deep into the pad of my left Hand.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
So my day ended early with a trip to the emergency room to make sure I
didn't have any metal in my hand and a tetanus shot just in case.
More to come later in the week once I can use my hand again.
And remember when the little voice tells you that you should move your hand - Listen!

Sounds like it hasn't been a good week for quite a few of us.
I experienced a bad fall in my home and broke four ribs. Looks like I'm going to be off work for some time.

Happy Wednesday Night.
Stop by the shop to play with some inner fender design and look at the air box.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Hard to tell from the picture but we are going to draw air in from the the indicators.

Well, it was another Good Day - No blood or trips to the Hospital.
I was able to get the last piece of Cladding on the truck without hurting myself and I used the drill.

Finished all of the fittings for the Fuel System

Jared was Kind enough to send me some Kick Panel Speaker Pods.
I'm going to have to build something similar with a smaller speaker to clear the roll bar.

I think you should stay away from cutting around the turbos.
Keep the inner fenders under the turbos awith some clearance.
That way the inner fenders won't get so hot and it will give you clearence to work on the engine if you need to and it lets you see more of the engine.
Just my .02 cents

I keep going back and forth on this - i have to remember this is going to be a show car first then Touring car (power tour). When the hood is open i need to have some more shock value.

Are there any concerns with paint durability that close to the turbos (espeically if you do the cutouts in the inner fenders?). Just wondering how that will look over time....
syborg tt
08-30-2006, 01:05 PM
yep there is a concern. Need to get the tires mounted and see how much clearence we have. My goal is to have at least 2.5 to 3 inches of clearence. I also have a couple other inner fender designs i am going to play with.
would like to acheive something like this however i don't have the width

that looks good but i judt do not like the way the fender wells meet the firewall. the round and smooth does not blend well with the flat. maybe a bit of a curve into it would look better.
i also think yours would flow better if you rounded the corners on the engine recess.

Long week and even a Longer Weekend.
Hung out at the waterpark with the kids and swallowed more chlorine then I want to admit.
Last week Robert from the Pro-Touring Forum made a suggestion.
So I took his advice and built yet another set of inner fenders.
He was right it cleaned up the engine bay and will make life much easier if I ever have to work on this thing.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I was able to get the rear bumper mounted.
We are going to have to pie cut the rear corner cladding to make it fit better.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Mounted the Tailgate with the second set of hinges (Genuine GM) and the tailgate doesn't fit any better then it did with the LMC Truck Hinges that were a 4th the price.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Dusted some paint on the radiator cover.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
That's all for this week.

Looking good! I like the latest inner fender approach, but I also like the approach pictured up above, but you don’t have the same amount of room. Your latest approach gives you more room to work in the engine compartment. Have you decided on colors yet? Again it looks great I can’t wait to see it in person!

Good Day to All,
Stopped by the Shop with my Dad last night he wanted to see the truck in person instead of pictures.
He said looks good just don't tell your wife how much you've spent.
I installed the new Flaming Rivers Steering Box and let me say it was on in 10 minutes.
It's nice having compatible parts. Everything fit perfect.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
We closed up the back panels - just to clean it up a little
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
We needed to add a little metal to the back corners so we mount the cladding.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
This is the last Panel needed to be completed. Then the bed is done

Good Day All,
I headed over to VFN Fiberglass on Saturday to look at the Mold that they made for the Rockers.
www.vfnfiberglass.com
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
We added a 1/4" to each side of the Rocker so they would actually be long enough.
From the Factory they were about a 1/2" shy and since we are making everything else so nice we might as well fix this.

Looks great!

Good Morning All,
Dave and I came up with an idea of a Removable Tie Down.
We wanted something that could be removed during a show or while driving on the street.
Once the frame is painted you won't even notice it.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Dave began working on the air inlet ducts.
We plan to draw air in from the factory driving lights.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
We going to extend the wheel well to complete the inner fender
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Dave started working on the belly pan for the rear.
The strings gives you an idea of what the center will look at.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Just a rear view
It actually looks like the center is lower then the end panels it's not - just an illusion

We finally found a suitable location for the overflow bottle behind the core support.
Yep it's a scary home but it works.

Yep it's tight in there but we can still view the tank from above.
