WHen you say widen the cab you mean they added weld and or metal to the sides ? Or just lots of bondo ?
I presume they didn't cut it in half and widen it. From the picture it doesn't look like they added a bunch of metal on the sides but maybe they've alread worked it.

Did he not post pics of that process? I believe the guys peeled the outer "fenders" away from the center part of the bed. Then welded up the gap.

There's no bondo on this truck unless it's for smoothing... ...it's all metal-work!!

Here you go... I knew it was there somewhere.

The side has been pulled out to match the widest part of the cab.
Next, they are going to cut the back of the cab and pull it out to match the side of the bed.
Our goal is to have a perfectly straight line down the side of the truck.

Cool truck - from a former Typhoon owner. I saw something in Hot Rod or Pop Hot Rodding awhile back on this build & just read thru the whole thread. You gotta be real happy that you are in the home stretch, so to speak.

This is by far one of the coolest builds on this site, if not the coolest. You're doing something a lot of guys wanted to do with their beater S-series. I can't wait to see it finished and see some numbers from it.

Hi All,

Kenny is really cranking on the Bodywork.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Looking down the side of the truck

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

You can see that Kenny has fitted the cladding with the fender.
There used to be a 1/2" gap

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Just a quick shot with the Side Cladding on the Truck.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Hard to tell but it's straight all the way down the side.
The bed is no longer wider then the truck.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

One of the most important things I've noticed this week is the fact that
Kenny may have actually used the Tripod.

Marty...your thread is by far the best updated one in the Projects section. I haven't replied in awhile because I didn't want to be a post whore but damn is this thing ever going to be sensational when it's finished. I swear the Pro-Touring genre has turned out some of the best damn hot rods ever built in the history of this hobby.

I was asked what it took to build the Sheet metal Dash.

This is going to seem strange but this is how this dash was built.

Step One -- Cut off the firewall.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Mocked up the new Firewall with the set back cut into it for the engine.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Finished the Firewall.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Then we moved inside the truck and finished the back side of the firewall and the tranny tunnel.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Mocked up the Seats and installed the Door bars.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Then we mounted the Vintage Air Compact Unit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Then mounted the Big Stuff 3 and the Specialties Power Wiper Motor.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Then Dave Bent up the Main Dash Panel. Things to note is that we took the curve out of the dash and we also raised up the Passenger side of the Dash to be on the same level as the Drivers Side.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The front of the Dash mounts into the factory mounting holes.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

We then took a Stock Syclone Dash Surround and mocked it up.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

syborg tt
01-15-2008, 07:47 PM
Then Dave built the Dash Surround out of sheetmetal.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Then we Mocked up the Dash for the Autometer Gauges.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Two Steps were done here. Dave welded a rod to the Dash surround to give it a soft lip. We also mounted the steering collumn in the Dash. We also took the liberty of actually centering the Steering wheel in front of the driver.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Dave then started making all of the support brackets behind the dash.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Picture of the Column coming thru the Firewall with the really nice Flaming Rivers Universal Joint.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Built the support Structure for the dash Bezel.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

One more mock up for the Autometer Guages. You can also see that the bottom of the Dash Surround has been finished.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

syborg tt
01-15-2008, 07:47 PM
Here is what the Surround looks like off the truck.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Okay, this would be the final Dash lay out.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The next step was to get a hold of Doc at Doc's Kustoms and have him build me a one off Dash Panel. Doc offers a great Kustom service and was super easy to work with.

Doc had one of his guy's draw it up.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Okay now the fun part - Hop on a plane and fly to Florida to watch the piece get cut.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Final Piece cut and placed in the Dash Surround.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Autometer was kind enough to lend us some Guages for Mock Up.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Here is what it looks like on the truck.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Back View of the surround so you can see how the panel is mounted.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Dave then cut the opening in the Dash pad.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

syborg tt
01-15-2008, 07:48 PM
Mounted the Surround and sprayed some color on it so you can get an Idea what it looks like.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Kris from Autometer came out to the shop and brought the gauge that he thought would look good on the truck.

We agree.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The next step was to place the Radio, Billet Specialties Vents and the Vintage Air Controller.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Time to mount more stuff behind the dash. We wanted to have the American Auto Wire harness mounted in the stock location for ease of wiring.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The switches were recessed into the dash to keep it clean.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The bottom of the dash is mounted to the tabs on the lower part of the "B" pillar.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Mounting of the MSD box.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Mounted the billet Defrost vents in the dash.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Dave finally caps off the sides of the dash.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

syborg tt
01-15-2008, 07:48 PM
Marked the location for the radio.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Picked up the head unit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Mounted the Radio and the Vintage Air controller in the dash.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Instead of having a tacky strap holding the radio, Dave insisted on making a real mount for the radio.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Finished piece to cap off the bottom of the dash surround

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Yep - your not going to believe it - Back to Florida.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Okay now to mock up the interior one last time.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The goal with the dash was to get near the factory center counsule so there wouldn't be a need to intergrate them into each other.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

syborg tt
01-15-2008, 07:49 PM
Took the dash over to "Body Language" to get it painted to protect it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

All that is left is to put in all of these pretty Autometer Gauges.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Each gauge was choosen and has a specific location based on the sweap and the need to see the guage.

There is still plenty more the plenty more that is going to be done to the dash and I will go back and update this part of the thread.

Good Afternoon All,

Just as the title says "We've got Wood"!

Kenny sent the Grille & Front Cover off to get digitally Scanned.
What we ended up with are dimensionally correct "Wood Bucks" of all the opening.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

All the parts laid out on the floor.
If you look at the grille piece you can see it has a concave shape

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

My Favorite - The Front Cover opening.
Notice how the buck follows the curve of the Front cover.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

This pictures shows the curve of the Wood a little better.
All of the parts were cut on a 4 Axis CNC machine.

Good Morning All,

Guy has been busy working on the getting the turbo's & Wastegates coated.
He offers Ceramic/Metallic Hi Temp Coating that is done in house.

Turbo's stripped and getting ready.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Since this is part Show Truck / Driver.
Guy wanted to make sure the Exhaust housings looked good,
so some extra time was spent cleaning them up.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

You can see the before and after pictures of the Wastegate.
Plenty of time was spent on the wastegates cleaning them up.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Step one - The Hi Temp coating has been applied to the exhaust housings.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

and the Wastegate.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Now the fun part - polishing up the exhaust housing.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

It's getting there - much better then the original rusty version.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

almost looks like a butt if you ask me.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

It's really good working with a shop that does hi temp coatings in house.

They also coat piston domes, combustion chambers, valves, and do dry film coatings on pistons and bearings,
and even do special coatings on interior surfaces of blocks to aid in oil drainback and heat dissipation.
Currently they are working on a special anti friction coating using Tungsten disulfide.
These guys are serious when it comes to this coating stuff!

There will be plenty modifications made to this hood so make sure you keep coming back to see what we have planned.

It's Tuesday and I'm pumped

Kenny Busted his ars this weekend and the truck is now ready for paint.

The GMC has been removed from the grille - Sorry GM

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The new Goodmark hood is on the truck.
The billet Hood Pins are mounted and look sweet.
www.hoodpins.net

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Kenny wasn't happy with the gap between the bumper and the tailgate
From the Factory it's well over and Inch.
You won't believe what it took to get the tailgate this close to the bumper.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The Intercooler opening has been finished off.
Also the factory support has been glassed into the front cover.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Getting ready to get loaded and headed over to get the Line-X.
Won't be long till you see the color.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I can't say enough good words about Kenny and his shop and I look forward to working with him on all of my future projects.

Good Evening all,

Yep it's late and I owe everyone and Update.
I'm almost finished with the basement so soon I'll be back to regular updates.

Guy at Rockford Racecraft took care of having the Intake Hat extended all the way back.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The goal is to hide the plumbing from view without making an engine cover.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Man is the polisher going to have fun with this. Should look really nice once it's done.

Good Morning All,

So talked to Kenny early Saturday Morning let's say 7am and he said he was going to paint all day.
Well at 6pm he sent me these pictures -- Kenny is the man is my book.

Now all we have to do is teach him how to take a picture.
Not to worry i may have a solution.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Yep it's a really tough color to photograph especially in a paint booth.

We should have some really good, no I mean great pictures of the truck in the next week or so.
Why - because Josh Mishler is actually going to take pictures of the truck.

Yep he's the Man - the Camera Man

If you've read any magazine lately you've seen his work.

Last week Kenny took the bed over the Line-X Dealer.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The underside and topside have been sprayed for protection from road debris.

I was asked earlier what the little notches were for on the front of the bed.
These were put in to clear the hardware that attaches the rollbar legs to the cab.

Good Morning All,

The Turbos are done and look really nice.
Both Guy and Precision Turbo really took care of me.

Guy & I started talking and we realized these Turbos have been shipped via UPS so many time it's just not right.
So here is a really long story -- see if you make it to the end.

So way back on June 25, 2004 I purchased custom Turbos from Precision Turbo.
www.precisionturbo.net www.rockfordracecraft.com

Precision Turbo shipped them to Rockford Racecraft. - 140miles

After Rockford Racecraft looked them over, he drove them to Competition Fabrication - 51 miles
www.compfab.com

When the truck was completed at Comp Fab they headed to my Shop - 54 miles

About 4 months later I loaded truck w/Turbos and headed to Recovery Room Interiors to meet Kenny - 601 miles
www.recoveryroomrodinteriors.com

Kenny Hauls truck, motor & those Turbos back to his Shop in Arkansas - 413 miles
www.kdhotrods.com

A short while later Kenny Ships Turbos back to my shop - 592 Miles
www.sportmachines.com

Then I ship Turbos to Rockford Racecraft so they could Polished and Hi-Temp all the surfaces of the Turbos. - 93 miles

Now here's were it gets fun ( if you've read this far )

In order to Hi Temp Coat the center section of the Turbo's you have to send the center section to Precision Turbo so they can take it apart - 144 miles

Precision Turbo - disassembles Center Section and Ships it back to Rockford Racecraft - 144 miles

Rockford Racecraft High temp coats the center section and then ships it back to Precision Turbo - 144 miles

Precision Turbo Reassembles the Center Section and ships them Back to Rockford Racecraft - 144 miles

Rockford Racecraft puts everything back together and then ships them to Kenny Davis - 617 miles
( really I hope this is there last Journey )

Now that's a lot of miles -- how many not sure it's late.

Okay so here are the Turbo's and yep there in the new bed on the new line-x liner.
Note the center section is officially Hi-Temp Coated Black

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The imperfections in the housing were tig welded prior to polishing.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Exhaust Housing were done in a silver finish.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Final Picture
yep - there they are sitting on that new line-x bed liner

Good Day all,

Where coming down to the end with the motor build.

However, we still have a couple little more problems that needed to be resolved.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The problems only gets worse when you put the valve cover on.
So the tube will have to be removed from the inside of the valve cover.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Once tube is removed the valve cover will leak oil.
To keep the oil from leaking we installed an O-ring under the ARP bolt.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Guy also had to remove a little material from the Rocker itself.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Plenty of updates to come this week.
So keep your eye's open.

Looking at your last post about the valve cover reminded me how much "fun" these cars are when we start customizing. Its always the least expected parts that show the most resistance.

Good Evening All,

I figured I would post the up pictures Sunday Night instead of Monday Morning.

I want to Thank the Guy's over at Line-X of Rogers Arkansas they did an outstanding job on the truck.
Line-X of NW Arkansas
2001 S 8th St
Rogers, AR 72758 ( 479.621.6262 )

The back of the cab has been coated since it will be exposed to the elements.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

If your not an S10 guy you wouldn't notice how square the "B" pillar is.
It's hard to tell it's been modified.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Just a different view of the bed with the Turbo's testing out the bed liner.

Hi All,

Okay it's not that late but I'm really tired.

Well, Kenny is at it again. He's not happy with a few spots on the truck so there back at it again.
Two things you will notice in the picture.
1. Primer on the new Standox paint
2. Standox is the Paint of choice for this project.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Yep back to the holding area and getting ready to hit the paint booth again.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Didn't Rockford Racecraft do a nice job making those Turbo's shinny.

I am one of Marty's friends and thought I would post a few pics from this weekend...

I drove down and met Marty, Kenny and Bob today, all I can say is quite the crew... I have been sworn to secrecy, about certian parts of the truck. Kenny and Bob were accomplishing some pretty cool stuff, while Marty and I played shop bitch at times...
Here are some pics of what I can share

Good Morning All,

Okay everyone wants to see some pictures.
So here Goes.

Were going to back Pedal just a little bit.
Quick Picture of Bob applying the Graphics to the doors.
Note the Safety Equipment - have to do things right (another inside joke)

Close Up of the Door Graphics - this was just the beginning.

Quick shot of the Grille
So is that Silver or Champaign

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The Original Concept was to create a Factory Prototype.
So in keeping with the Concept the Paint had to be applied like it would at the Manufacture.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Keeping the details throughout the paint job.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Still to be applied is the Satin Silver to the inside of the bed & Bed sides.
Watch for More updates this week.

Good Morning,

Kenny & Bob laid out the two tone lines on the cab.
If your curious -- yes they within 1/32"
They have to be perfect for Bob.

Doing it right meant paint had to go into the door jams.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

At one time there was a weld Seam on the back of the cab.
We didn't care for how it looks so bye bye it goes

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Getting some Color

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

What a Difference it makes to have the 2nd color on the truck.
Bob spent a couple hours looking at paint chips trying to get the right color "Red"

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Time to pull the paper off and get it out of the booth.
Yep - that's Speedy on the left and Bob on the right.

Someone has to tell Kenny to lay off the Caffeine

The two tone has been layed out and now it's time to work on the tailgate.

It's a fairly large & flat surface so it needs to be broken up just a little.

Placement of the Graphics is key.

[SIZE=3][FONT=Comic Sans MS]Hi All,

It's all about the little details that no one may ever notice.

This is how the bed gap looks on a Stock s10 -- Not so good.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Sliding the bed forward you can solve the gap problem.
However, you will need to stiffen the chassis to prevent the bed from twisting and hitting the cab.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Of Course this then leads to the next problem.
The bed is just a little wider then the cab.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

So off comes the bed.
Now it's time to drill out all of the spot welds that hold the bed sides on the truck

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Just a close up of the fun that Dave had drilling spotwelds

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

It's not over yet - it's actually just beginning.
This is proof that you fix one problem and it just makes the other problems look worse.

You can see that the cab has an excessive curve to it - now that has got to get fixed.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

You can see that Kenny is hard it here.
This is proof that Kenny is an all around Builder.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Time to start slinging some mud.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The bed had to come off so you can see the work Kenny did on the "B" Pillars

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Now this is how it should have come from the factory

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Still not Satisfied

Somethings is really wrong with Kenny.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Time to put some paint on it and make sure it looks good.
Yep - this is just a test paint.

The good thing is that I am Short 5' 7" so these actually fit me well.

The good thing is the back glass will be deep tinted factory gold. So you won't see the seat.

However, we all know Kenny's not good with the Camera so the guy's at Bell Tech sent me a nice image.

Good Morning All,

Yet, another modification that is so simple and may never be noticed.

From the Factory the body line on the "A" pillar was going in the wrong direction.

Thank you very much and I promise to do more updates over the next two weeks

This has got to be one of my favorite builds I've seen. I'm actually commited to following the progress. :twothumbs Keep it up.

Shame on anyone who has a negative comment. (Whom is most likely non-existent.)

I wish I had the space and tools to pull off a build of a similar caliber.

Thank you for the compliments on the build up.

It doesn't bother me when someone makes a comment about something they may not like on the truck. I really like when people offer suggestion or ideas that we may have never thought of. It's better for everyone and it creates new idea's.

That is one shiny truck! Can't wait to see some NICE pics of it. I'm with derekf here on the fade, I'm not sure I see it either. It looks darker down by the belt line, but that looks like its a reflection of something on the ground, or is that the fade I'm looking at?

Good Morning All,

Last minute decision to smooth the Wiper Cowl.
Remember the truck has a remote wiper set up so we may have another wiper cowl with wiper holes
for the Power Tour next year.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Bad lighting but here is the only picture of the doors cleared.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The tailgate is complete and yep it's resting on the new bedliner.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I was asked for a close up of the tailgate graphics that showed the shadows that Bob does.

That's all for today.
More to come on Thursday.

Hey Marty,

Searched through the thread, and looked through your gallery, but I couldn't find any info/pics on how your cab was mounted to the frame and how it tied into the frame. I assume there's outriggers from the frame to the cage and there's plates under and above that bolt in, but other than that, do you have rubber mounts or something?

Paint looks great, the amount of detail on this truck is ridiculous. It takes a very, very, methodical, patient, and detail-oriented person to build something like this. Props, the truck is setting a quality standard that will probably never be broken in the minitruck world.

Good Morning All,

Some of you may know we've been on the hunt for new seats for the truck.
Well, with a little direction from the BB forums (( nissan1995 )).

I looked at a bunch of vendors and found that Sparco had exactly what I was looking for.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I choose the Sparco Modena Suede Seat
www.sparcousa.com

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I called them and hooked up with Gabe he said they still had a few available.
This led to that and the seats are on there way to Kenny's.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

My Favorite part of the seat is the back.
To bad it's there going in a pick up truck and you won't see the back.

The truck uses the stock frame mounts with poly bushings. We've considered switching to solid mounts. Also, the floor above the mounts has been redone & plated. There is also a mid brace that ties the back of the cab to the frame. ( it also acts to center the cab on the frame )
