Hi all,

I'm really excited to share a new project I'm working on. It's a 1967 Pontiac Firebird. My client has had this car for the past 15 years, but hasn't gotten around to restoring it. The client initially wanted to do a regular factory restoration with a little bit of an upgrade to the engine. I'm very passionate about pro-touring and I shared some of the recent technology and trends in pro-touring with the client; he absolutely loved the idea and agreed to move away from the factory restoration and go with a pro-touring project.

We spent a about 6 weeks looking at all of the options from engine, suspension, and wheels. There are many different options when building a completely custom car; each with its own benefits and drawbacks. The final goal for the client was to have a street-able car that looked and performed like a brand new car. Turn the key, hot or cold, and the engine starts right up. Plenty of power and good MPG. The suspension had to be tight and nimble allowing the car to handle like a modern sports car.

We've been working with Ben Hermance for the past month coming up with the perfect styling, color, and stance. Here's what we have planned for the 1967 Firebird project:

Start with the 1967 as the foundation
Use the 1968 quarters to add the Pontiac side markers
Use the 1968 windows to remove the vent windows
Use the 1969 Trans Am hood for a unique, aggressive look
1967-styled billet mirrors for a clean, modern look
Metallic white paint scheme, nod towards Pontiac Trans Am
COPO Camaro inspired stripes on the quarter panels and hood
The stripes are titanium to match the Forgeline wheels
Each stripe has a thin ascent of gold, which matches the brake calipers
The interior is off-white, black, and uses gold-stitching
The style and color is designed to flow from the interior to the exterior
Very clean interior with a mixture of old-school and new-school styling

Enough with the description, let's take a look at the renders that Ben put together for us.

We've been thinking really hard what kind of components we want to use in the car. So far here is what we have planned:

GMPP LSX454 EFI engine
Billet Specialities LS Tru-Trac front assembly
Tremec T-56 Magnum 6sp transmission
Art Morrison Max-G full frame chassis with upgraded C06 front suspension and 4-link rear suspension
Forgeline ZX3R wheels
Michelin Super Sports 275/35R18 and 325/30R19
AutoRad Radiator with aluminum core support and power steering cooler
Digital tail lights
Billet hood and trunk hinges
Sparco R700 front seats
Ring Brothers billet door handles
DSE remote windshield wiper
New Vintage gauges
Sparco 383 steering wheel
Clayton Machine Works pedals
Rick's Tank + ZL1 fuel system

I'm really excited about this project. Be sure to subscribe to this thread for future updates. I have a bunch of pictures as I begin to work on this car and transform into a modern pro-touring machine.

painting that bumper, that will help... anything to make a 67 front look better. I would go for 69 front end though :) 10x better looking

I always see a 67-68 firebird and it looks like some chick doing a duckface... or maybe a turtle beak :)

Very humble beginning. The car looks fairly solid, but you never know until you tear it down and blast it.

Starting to tear it down and get down to the metal. Overall not too bad, although there are some rust spots here and there. We'll probably end up getting new quarters and possibly fenders. On a lighter note, it looks like a mouse left a present for me.

Well today wasn't very good news. Was performing a compression check on the LS7 and noticed a particular cylinder was very low. Checked it again just to make sure it wasn't a bad seal or equipment, and built up enough pressure to pop out the little plastic plugs.

Water shot everywhere. Engine was completely flooded. This was very, very disappointing because we ran a ****** report on the car the engine was pulled from and the car was totaled, but was no where near water. The seller swears up and down he didn't know the engine was flooded. Right now my client wants to return the used LS7 and just go with a new LSX 454 instead. Now we need to work with eBay and the seller to get a refund.

Was really disappointed to see the damage done to the LS7. We had a lot of confidence because we bought it from a board member of the Corvette association. Thankfully the seller agreed to return the engine and a full refund.

On a better note, it feels like Christmas around here. Lots of new parts showing up at the shop.

Love the renders. Looks like it will be an awesome build. Real shame about the LS7 though. Was it flooded from a cracked head/block, or flooded in the sense that water from the exterior environment got in?

ebmotorsports
05-30-2014, 07:03 PM
Not sure about the source of the water, cylinder 2 was low on compression but when I put air on the cylinder it came back through the intake(possible bent or burned valve) not the oil pan, then if you notice the rust on the flywheel and the dowel pins on the back of the block I suspect partial submersion but it is just a guess without the rest of the car

Hey all. I got some more updates today. The blasting went very well. However after talking to the customer we're going to end up putting new steel on the fenders, quarters, and roof.

Funny story is that I found a brand new fuel door that was stuck behind the quarter panel, right behind the B pillar. Must have been dropped in there when being assembled in the GM factory back in 1967. Poor owners probably had a rattle they could never locate, and the loose fuel door behind the quarter was the culprit.

a non broke LS7 is gonna cost an arm and a leg... I drug home a LS3 one day... same issue... mud in the oil pan. Sucks...

It took 5 months later to find another good priced used working engine... I think a LS7 is even harder to get your hands on without paying through the nose.

Some more good news. The LSX454 came in today. Looks really great. Next step is to build up some engine mounts for it and get it fitted properly into the chassis.

Also fitted it with the ATS road racing oil pan. Looks very sharp.

Thanks guys, the back of the head is about 1/2" away from the firewall, pretty tight. I will probably make a recess in the firewall for more clearance. I will have to for the back of the intake regardless of what I do wit the rest of it. The intake sticks back prob 1" (guesstimate) from the back of the block.

Bob in St. Louis
08-03-2014, 02:28 PM
Wow, yea...that's tight. I was thinking about play in the mount allowing contact in worst case scenarios (tire spin with sudden "grip") and denting the firewall.
I guess you could always let fate and physics tell you how close it needs to be. haha
(that's just a little joke).

But seriously, that's one fine car you've build. Just awesome.

If you have to take the driveshaft out (in the future), are you going to be able to get it out?
Looks like the bent sections of frame under the shaft would prevent that, and the tunnel being welded on would make life difficult.
Or is it just the perspective I'm seeing?

I'm new to the concept of PT, and wasn't sure if y'all were high tech enough to have ABS and/or traction control.
I was thinking that either would be a detriment to "going faster", and this car wouldn't be driven in the snow anyway.

Just a suggestion that you probably know already, when welding stainless if you don't purge it you'll end up with it "sugaring" inside. You can also use solar flux available at weld supply stores to paint on the inside of the piping that will cut down on sugaring pretty well too. Im a pipefitter by trade so just trying to pass on a tip I've learned :)

I did the same paint theme with my LS7 by mathching the color of some of the engine components to the powder coat color of the frame. It looks like anthrocite grey. It does tie the chassis and engine in together very nicely. I also am looking at reengineering the rear bumper as you are with the exhaust cutouts in the bumper. I have been following your build from the beginning. You are doing some very impressive work on this car. Nice to see another Pontiac/LSX project.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/vHvfNphh-1.jpg

One of the challenges we had is that in order for it to "look right," we had to move the gas lid up over 1" so that it's vertically centered between the trunk and bumper.

Here is a really great profile shot:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/zucDU8Dh-1.jpg

I also did a lot of work on the exhaust cutouts. I added a nice contour that fit the new style and stance of the car:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/aOsoICzh-1.jpg

And finally I have completed the metal work on the 69 Trans Am hood:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/0nEj5lnh-1.jpg

I think the steel hood inserts give the car a more aggressive and consistent look when compared to the factory.

Hey ya'll,

I got some exciting updates for today. I was able to get the engine all dressed up and mounted in the chassis. I also installed the suspension and brakes.

I made a special conduit through the driver's side of the chassis to run all of the gas and brake lines. This way nothing hangs below the chassis and looks nice and clean.

Also mounted a remote oil filter up front.

That is a pretty trick trunk spoiler. Is that just round bar with sheet metal tacked to it? Looks more like a 69 spoiler. Thank you for not using a camaro spoiler:)

thanks, the PV should be easy enough to get to through the fender, only have to set it once as far as I know

Thanks, im sure these are not original to me, somebody somewhere has done this stuff before. The spoiler is made with round tube as a Frame and the sheet metal welded to the frame. There are some more pictures of it earlier in the thread

The brake line through the frame is a solid stainless line and should (famous last words) never give any problems, there are two access holes if need be though. Good luck on your build.

Hey ya'll,

Been working on the dash. The goal was to match up the indentations from the console and let them flow up into the dash, as if it was made like that from the factory. Also installing a double DIN audio/navigation system from Alpine. Using the circle-shaped billet vents, so that all the air vents are the same shape throughout the car, as opposed to the ugly rectangle air vent in the center dash. I really think the combination of the console and dash bring the car together. You can see the side ridges from the console flow up into the dash on both sides.

Hey ya'll,

Finished up the dash today. Created the cut-out for the Dakota Digital AC unit. It will be vertically mounted below the push-button start.

Took extra time to make sure the Dakota Digital cut-out was of the same style as the push-button start and cigarette lighter. Recessed into the dash and vertical, facing the driver.

Hey ya'll,

Been working hard on the 2010 Camaro console. I had to move the shifter cut-out up about 1.5" and some some custom fiberglass work. Removed the late-model gauge cluster that only worked on the new Camaro and replaced it with two 2-1/16" gauges from NVU; these gauges are in the 1969 Series that also matches the speedometer and tachometer in the dash. It really brings the interior together.

Also have a billet shifter ring from Lokar that fits nicely into the console. Below that is the power window buttons. They're in the retro-style from Nu-relics.

Walking a fine-line between modern and retro requires a lot of customized work, but I think it's really coming out great.

Hey ya'll,

Been working on the wiring this week. Wanted to share some more pictures with you.

Since we used the 2010 Camaro console, we ended up using the 2010 Camaro parking brake as well that integrates nicely with the console.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/E7Hp9jgh-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/JspWTyCh-1.jpg

We decided to go with the II Much vents. You can see the underside here.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/G97rskJh-1.jpg

Here's a view of the II Much vents from inside the trunk.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/ykeri3oh-1.jpg

Put a healthy dose of Dynamat everywhere to reduce all the road noise.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/2qDTQjHh-1.jpg

I put all of the wiring behind the passenger seat. This project will not have any rear seats, but instead will have a pair of storage containers in the rear. This way you can service the wiring easily from inside one of the storage containers.

We're using the American Autowire harness and Dakota Digital headlight and radiator fan control units. Also mounted the power locks, push button start, and RFID units back here as well.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/IOpiQUbh-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/46oTf8zh-1.jpg

We're using the Optima batteries and made a custom CNC bracket to hold it in place in the trunk. Very clean clamp system to hold it on the base instead of holding it from the top.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/MbERClzh-1.jpg

Just starting to wire up some things inside the dash as well.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/hHTOjwEh-1.jpg

You can see how the new, modern dash came out once I painted it. It will flow very nicely with the 2010 Camaro console.

Hey yall,

Just finished up all of the wiring and testing it all. Very cool how it's working off RFID when you approach the car and unlocks it. The dome light gradually comes on as you open and close the doors. The headlights automatically turn no and off depending if it's dark outside. You would think you're driving a brand new BMW with all the electronic features in this car!

I also just finished up the windshield and side glass in the car. The windshield and rear glass is over-sized and I turned it into a flush mount, just like you would find on a new car.

I put dynamat and dynaliner all throughout the interior of the car, even inside the doors. When you knock on the steel, it sounds very solid. I know this thing is going to drive and be quiet just like a new car. OK maybe I'm just kidding. We all know that GM LSX454 and 3" Borla exhaust is going to light up when you get on the gas!

I also got the headliner installed. Was happy that went very smooth with no issues.

Created a sub enclosure for the two 10" Alpine subs. Got a little bit creative and put the Pontiac logo as the bass reflex port. I'll put a red LED back there so it glows :)

One last little touch is that I put a steel mesh behind the bass reflex port on the sub enclosure as well as the inlets on the quarter panels, which cool the rear brakes.

I'll be putting the fenders on very soon and starting on the upholstery as well.

Here are some pictures.

Got some more updates to you. On the final stretch now. Just working on dressing up the engine bay, inner fenders, intake, and some other odds and ends. The flush mount rear glass worked out really well.

Hey ya'll,

Time for a BIG update today. Been working really hard to finish up this 1967 Firebird. Plan on taking it to its first car show this weekend. We should be up in Ohio as well.

The interior is coming along nicely. Fitted the console and other trimmings in today. Also working on the trim pieces in the front. Just need to install the bumper now.

Painted and installed the custom rear spoiler. It's looking very good.

Hey guys,

Wrapped up the trunk interior today. Used the same german square as in the cabin interior. Made a nice subwoofer box with top-end Alpine 10" subs. Also created a nice Pontiac logo between the speakers. Put a red LED in there so it lights up the Pontiac logo cutout in red.

We made a 3/16 plate that runs the length of the rocker to bolt the body to the frame and we welded the roll bar to that plate. In the trunk we made plates also similar to what you would do for a unibody install but the bolts that go into the frame go through those plates as well. It's very solid and handles like it's on a rail
