Okay so in my search of finding more ways to improve my passion for cars I got to talking with my girl friends step dad, he started doing body work when he was 16 he is now 62 so he knows all the tricks in the book and in hoping he'd give me a good price to paint my car he gave me something much better. He told me he'd help me do all the body prep and paint for free, 3 months later we have made a ton of progress on the car and have made some extra money helping him do paint match jobs.
we even did a 67 corvette for one of his old clients. I never understood why body shops quote me 18k for a paint job but after losing my fingerprints due to hours of sanding and shaping things I can see why, I don't know why but their is something really cool about sanding a car for weeks then finally painting it and seeing the glass like shine it gives off. Any suggestions other body prep guys can give me to up my game?

I've always liked body work. I've always wanted to learn upholstery though!

Power tools. Don't be afraid to grab a few things from Harbor Freight or Sears, etc. Next a few looooooong boards for blocking. Your personal teacher is priceless. Try to absorb all that he is telling you. Too bad you cant just download his knowledge...the rest is getting dirty and mending your fingerprints. You can try wrapping some masking tape around the tips of your fingers. Good Luck.

He Has an air compressor 4 das, 5 spray guns a ton of blocks and boxes of sand paper. I'm going to try wrapping some tape around my finger though I was gonna use a glove but don't like how it doesn't let me feel if I have a smooth area

I wear the thin rubber gloves. I go through boxes and boxes of them.
I asked a few body guys for help to show me some things. Most don't want to help, even offered to pay for there time.
Awesome that you have someone willing to teach you.

Awesome that you have someone willing to teach you. yea I offered to pay him but he said no ,the thing is he had a stroke 2 years ago so he can't do as much anymore but remembers everything and is on disability so every time we get a side job I let him keep the the majority of the money. I've been taking pictures of all the work we do and customer satisfaction Talleys on the side he told me to keep a folder and once we finish the camaro to take that folder and go to a shop he use to work at to try and get a job.
I'm so grateful to him for everything he's teaching me and all he wants is for me to buy him baloney for his sandwiches xD
