Hey friends,
New user here and wanted to start a thread on my pops and I's 1970 Mustang Convertible. Short story is he bought this for $500 in 1984 and mildly restored it. Simple 302 2V with a 3 speed auto in her. In 2008 we decided to turn this into a Pro Touring ride and or possible do some dragging with it. Pics below as we've come along with her. Larry Shoaf at Rodcrafters is currently doing the work.

Trying on some shoe sizes. The fronts are 18x9.5 with 275/40/18 Need to go 35 instead. Rears are off a 2005 GT that were used for rollers.

Your not worried about the rear diff hitting your exhaust?

[QUOTE=I_make_oil;1069251]Your not worried about the rear diff hitting your exhaust?[/QUOT

The car was fully articulated in the rear end before they set the hangers. I suppose they could always be extended some if we run into any problems. This was the only way because of the Heidts 4-link cross bar on the rear suspension. we took the idea from The Business Card and the other pic.

So what wheels should we go with? Matte/flat black will be the color of the entire wheel. Suggestions?

70Vert,

The exhaust looks like a very tight fit. I dig the cutouts. Looking good so far.

Yeah Tony.. The subframe left us no room. Had to run 2.5" vs 3" due to lack of room. The muffs aren't as close as they seem to the hog. I'll get a better shot soon when it's up on the lift. He's currently working on deleting reverse lights and front and rear side markers. Also installing Lokar pedals and shaping rear valance including tucking the bumper and fitting it tighter.

I sold my 69 convertible to build my garage. I can appreciate the need for that subframe connector! Your car should look great. IIRC Comp Cams built a pro-touring 70 Mustang Vert back in 2002 that you may be able to steal some ideas from if pics from that are still floating around. .

70vertstang
05-27-2014, 06:15 PM
Sorry to hear you sold it bishir. The subframe connectors were highly suggested by a few peps from the beginning. The car will be blue so they were painted to match. Thanks for the heads up on the IIRC build. I looked and couldn't find it though. Anyone have a link?

Had a chance to swing by to check on her today. Had the front and rear side makers deleted as well as the reverse lights and antenna hole in passenger front fender. Also got another shot of the exhaust vs hogs head. 9672496726

Just an update to the project. Getting ready for some color. Started working on the metal and fab a Boss 429 scoop. This will be metal and around an inch shorter than the stock style. Body looks great under the paint and in the jams. True rust free survivor. You can also see the custom cold air shoots that were made. The false turn signals in the front will be opened up to feed the air!

Some more pics to see. These are from a few weeks back. Should be spraying color this week or next. They ran into a small amount of rot on the rear quarter bottom and had to repair so it slowed it just a bit.

Roger, these are simply "shop rollers" for now. We had to just slap on a bigger diameter for the big brakes until we pick out new wheels. I pinching pennies for a set of Forgelines. But to answer your question, none. The fronts don't turn very far before the rub..

Some pics from earlier this week.. Cars ready for color now. He said it will be 2 weeks before he sprays it though. Ill get more when he puts down the first coat. The color is going to be Ford SZ blue like on the new Raptors. All matte black trim (anything chrome) and matte black wheels. Hood will be matte black too. Fingers crossed that it will look good! lol

Sears Diehard Platinum AGM sealed size 65. Getting a new black cloth top and discussing interior ideas. Headlights from Truck-Lite are ordered. LED's!

Ok so update. We are currently working with Detroit Speed to get some custom wheels made. Boy its stressful!! You buy them, you own them. I wish they could do a fit test first. It just seems to be too much room for error.. any ideas on that? Well I found a ****load of old pics throughout the build that deserved to be up on here so ill post away as I browse through them.

Stopped by the shop today with pops and meet with the upholster man. Went over what we wanted and starting that process. We decided it to all be covered in black leather with minimal grain. Almost smooth to match the steering wheel. Were picking out new inside door handles. We need to get them installed if different from factory ones so the panels can be made around them. We also have bought a new cloth black top with glass rear window. We'll be having that installed in the next month or so.

We also had the new Lokar gas pedal installed and looks killer! We were able to fire her up and finally goose it from inside the car!! lol

Next on the list will be..
Door and rear panels made
Rear seat covered
center console finalized and covered
visors to be cleaned up and dyed along with hardware painted matte black
cut outs to be wired up
cooling fans to be wired differently so we can manually force them on.
carpet laid down
after console is covered and back in, dash pad and final wiring completed
trunk area to be finalized including all wiring and panels
continue to search and work on wheels. (this is the biggest thorn in my side at the moment!!)

I'm sure more will pop up but this is the list for now. I can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel!!

Wow, I never realized how narrow of a track those TCI front ends have.

I guess part of it is related to the late model wheels on the front?

Sure looks like you've got tons of room to go with deep dish rims on the front.

The wheels on here are rollers from a 2005 GT. Way wrong on the offset. I can only turn them about half way before they hit. I figure we can stuff 9-9.5s in the front and at least do 10 in the rear. I'm meeting a guy next week who's taking measurements. I'll try to keep the thread updated as we're moving now!!!!

Not quite sure yet. I do know they will be either all matte black or matte centers with polished lip. Maybe some Formula 43 wheels.

6-8 weeks on delivery... blaaa

Finally got the wheels after 8 week lead time! Had to change the original ones picked out due to fitment and look. Went with the US Mags 3-piece Forged Pro Touring PT.2-U702. Custom matte black with stainless hardware exposed. and Nitto NT05's all around. 18x8 in front and 18x9 in rear. Prob could have done an inch more all around on width but i can always go back and get the inner or outer hoop widened on the 3-piece. That's a pro!

The computer module for the TCI 6X was bad so we had to send that back to be tested and replace. I will say we received excellent customer service from them as we purchased the tranny in 2011 and they were willing to work with us on the swap out. The understood these type projects don't happen overnight.

That being said, the guys at the shop will be dialing in the trans and motor over the next week. Ill get to take my first drive then. Ill be taking her back to the upholstery man to hang the new Mach 1 door panels and match the leather on the back bench to the new Corbeau LG1s we ordered. Oh did I say we have a set of those about 2 weeks out custom wide leather with double locking sliders? WE DO!

Here are a few ****ty pics of the wheels. Ill get better ones when we get her outside after all this rain blows through. ( i'm having the guys lower the coil overs an inch in the rear and a half in the front. Maybe could have even done 19"s on the rear to fill the well.)

That looks really nice. It does look like you have a lot of space for wider wheels down the road. I have a 68 vert and just got done putting on 18*10 and 18*8 wheels. They fill up my wheel wells completely. I don't think I have more than 1/4" clearance anywere. LOL! Can't wait to see the finishing touches on this project!

A few more pics today. So the car has been test driven, took forever on the trans setup. The seats we ordered from Corbeau were made incorrectly. Found that out on the day they were to ship.. VERY disappointed in that company and wouldn't deal with then again. The seats wont be in until around the first of the year. I should have her out and driving next week. Ill report back then !

Get her home and starting to test and tune how I we want it. The TCI 6X is a beast to program and dial in. I did drop the rear about 3 inches to close that gap some. Adjusted the coilovers to a middle point on the two-way.
