To eliminate D.O.D.? Looking for a cost effective swap for my 2nd gen Firebird and I came across a deal on this particular motor. I was originally going the 5.3 route due to cost issues but the price is right. Are there any other issues with using this motor that may drive the cost up? It doesn't include the 4L80e.

Look up DOD delete kit on google, you should see a kit from Texas Speed. You can view all the pieces required to swap there. Basically a cam gear, guide, and a few other misc pieces.
I don't think there are any other issues with them.

Exactly what Schwartz guy said.
I copied this from Texas-Speed - "A non-DOD camshaft is required!
DOD Delete Kit, Includes: LS2 Chain Dampener, LS7 Lifters, LS2 Lifter Trays, Your Choice of Head Gaskets, Your Choice of Head Bolts, LS3 Valley Cover, PCV Hose, PCV Plug, Cam Swap Gasket Kit"
Most people do head work at the same time. Just makes sense. And of course tuning. You need to tune after all this.

Great...thanks for the info. Since there is no trans, should I try and find a 4L80e or is the 4l60e ok for a fun street car? I believe they're the same size so both should require some fabrication to fit.

You may get varying responses here but the 4L60E isn't known for being tough. However, they can be built to take up to 600HP but that wont be cheap - at all. I only know of 1 4L60E that was built in haste to take 700 because the car owners had a very strict deadline to get the car on the road and they couldn't get an L80E in time - that was for HotRod mag.
Im interested to see what other people say.

If you can find a 4l80 for a good price, go for it. The 4L80e would be the most usable in stock form. If you need to find a core to rebuild, 4L60e will be cheaper, but you might end up spending more in the end to get it to the same HP rating as the built 4L80.

G8 would have had a 6l80e. I wouldn't mind having one of those but my 4l80e will do for now.

Maybe I am confused, but I thought the 4l80 was larger in size than the 4l60,65, and 70??

Yes you're right it's bigger.
I can't find anywhere in this thread that the size was an issue though...?

This is what I was referring to.
