Waiting for mdi interface to start working with the bcm and modules for the global a architecture for the interior. Looking into the copo bcm. Have not found the pn for it yet. It appaers to support the instrument cluster and a few other body functions like the windows, but probably cant add rpo's to that just like you can't remove from production bcms. :banghead::banghead:

Thanks for the comments. Considering aftermarket or building custom. The rockers are being sectioned to accommodate the seats and console. Only have a couple inches for door panel to seat clearance.

The down side is... if they dont like it they'll haunt you forever. Worth it I think.

LOL. I did not want to post my fathers picture on the net without his permission, but due to the amount of comments i got on the face blur on this and other forum, i posted an unblured pic during his fitting. The coupe is his, so the free labor is net savings on his pocket book, and everytime he changes his mind, the free parts are handed down for the vert, or the next runner up for ;)... mama's new ride...

This is awesome. I wish my donor car was a later model. I am doing basically the same thing, only with a 2002 donor. Instead of cutting in the tunnel and the firewall section, I actually installed the entire floor and firewall from the 02. It was a lot of work, but it will be nice when everything just bolts back in. I will be following this thread as it gives much needed inspiration to continue on mine.

Well...we thought we might be able to get by without modifying the inside lower cowl, but the brake pedal carrier and booster location is just too low and interferes with the wheel house and the steering shaft...so lower cowl mods are in order to raise those components, therefore, were are going for the 5th gen wiper motor and evaporator/heater box too. Oh, looks like a factory hood is off the table. LOL

Its amazing how well a 5th gen harness just fits a 1st gen. only need to move the power seat connections to the center of the harness. they were cut by the junkyard crew anyway. The back seat base/floor will be boxed up to accommodate the narrowed 5th gen fold down rear seat, so the harness crossing there is perfect. AllData was wrong on the pinout connector views for the front light harness to ecm connector. i'll post the differences for anyone ever troubleshooting a ZL1.

Thanks James. The dash in the pics is the mockup dash and is trimmed back further than The final will be (never measured..tape line/cut. I cut it short so I could visualize how I was going to mod (cut down and restructure) the 68 steel dash at the front to maintain the correct winshield base and receive the 5th dash. I will be finishing off that structure after I finish the back seats, and making a template to cut down a new 5th dash. When that's done I'll post up linear measurements at 1" increments and pics so you can duplicate the template. It will be pretty close to the pods, and the defroster duct will also slightly intrude the gauge pod.

Fabrication on the cradle for the Restomod Air Evaporator core. Also installed dowels in the cradle, to locate the core, for easier final install. Went with Restomod Air for a few reasons specific to this build, that we will probably do a dedicated write up on when the reasons prove to be valid. Stay tuned.

Very nice project

Thanks guys!

With the Evaporator installed, that was the last major component that might have shifted the dash structure around. The clutch and brake pedal carriers were finally tied back to the 5th Gen dash structure. process was the same for both. Bolt in, make templates, cut, bend, weld and grind.

Cryptonomad

The fabrication for the dash is complete! Now we can fit the mock cover on to make the final template for trimming the new dash cover. there will be some minor duct fabrication left to do, but that can be done while its away at body and paint. For current summary and example these completed pics are of the dash structure, pedal assy's, BCM, HVAC, and harness its final location and all assembled! BTW the OnStar module is also tucked up under the pass side in its OEM 5th gen location, and the bulk connectors to the body harness will tuck nicely into the door hinge plate sockets.

One thing I just did to my Z06 (and I'm told is a common upgrade to the GenV Camaro) is to replace the clutch master cylinder. Tick Performance has a nice upgrade. I say this because you won't need the clutch springs if you do that, and you'll have a vastly improved clutch pedal feel.

Thanks John. We did research before and also came to the same conclusion on the oem clutch master. Last i heard Tick doesn't have a replacement for the 5th gen, and was unable to find anything but stock GM replacement on their site just now. I'll do some more poking around.

PS I did drill out the spot welds in the clutch pedal carrier that holds the CMC and realign the whole thing with perpendicular travel for the whole 1 1/4" it moves. It is not like that from factory, which surprised me a little with such a short throw. Read a lot about them leaking. If we weren't married to the clutch and brake sensors, we would have stayed with the common 3rd gen setup that we already bought from Tick. Although failure rate on the OEM 5th gen is far less then the 3rd gen conversion most 1st gen'ers do for sure! lol

PSS also we are using a remote reservoir instead of the brake reservoir OEM style for that reason also.

Yes. Programmed the MYlink radio and was jamming to XM while i was sorting the harness a few months back. Was teasing my father with onstar calls....LOL trying to get him to sub his harness to onstar in case i fried a module he'd get notified.
The original MYlink we got with the donor car was fried. This is a replacement tested while harness was on floor, before i unlocked it.

Yes Wayne. They are factory 5th gen E-brake cables with their ends intact. We mildly filed the casting marks on the inside of the end, and they slid right on. we also had to enlarge the hole on the bracket itself for the cable casing to slide in. It does have to be shortened and new swages on the front where the vise grips are clamped on in the pics, but other than that....near perfect fit for our application, and ops checks good.

Finished subframe mods, to include AC notch. The pics show clearances around the late model ctsv AC compressor. It is really tight and may need a little BFH work to dimple some more for the high side line manifold bolt to be safe. pics are deceiving as there is about 3/8". clearance for the coilovers. Also the intercooler pump bracket made to mount pump close to the OEM 5th gen position. It is time consuming to fabricate things and then assemble to make sure everything still ends up where it should. Subframe is ready for prep and paint.

A lot of final welding, close up, bodywork, seam sealing, prep, and paint this week working towards final assembly of the bottom of the car, suspension, and drivetrain. The underside of the trans tunnel and wheel wells have a base coat of spray on bedliner for additional durability before top coated in satin black. Brief sidetrack to shorten emergency brake cables 4 1/4" and the method used. Was unable to find a location local that could swage new cable ends, so used another popular method of plug welding a homemade barrel on.

After about 5 days cure time on the top coats, we will install the subframe and swing the whole body assembly on the rotisserie for brake and fuel line, fuel tank, and misc nit noids.

looking great! Are you doing anything at the bottom corners of the rear window on the coupe? I had a 69 firebird and it rusted in that corner since it would never drain water out. I fixed the rust but it eventually started coming back. Maybe put a small drain in the window track or fill it up with sealer when you put the window in.

Thanks. No drain tubes, just silicon bronzed seams and the windows will be installed using urethane and dams instead of the old butyl tape. Besides..We will all be dust in the ground before it rusts out again! LOL

The start up was was bitter sweet, and only had a few issues. had a faulty high power steering fitting that blew fluid all over the nicely painted chassis, and were short one intake tube bend, so had to turn up intake temporarily and fix the steering line for the shake down test drive. Consequently lost day light, so we did back out of shop on its own power. Short video

For anyone wondering on the exhaust tailpipes over the chassisworks 4-link. We started with a magnaflow 2.5" mandrel system. Purchased 2 additional 5" mandrel u-bends and cut, clocked, and welded parts from each. In the pic you can tell which parts of pipe came from original tailpipe or u-bend by the sheen. The u-bends were not polished.

Its been a while...too hot here in NVA. Here is work on custom valance. liked the 69 fogs, however wanted something a little different than has been done before. Wanted to keep the center open for air flow to the coolers while maintaining structure re-installing support for the hood latch/grille/lower valance assy. The lights are led fogs with multicolor halo's. the halos will be used for DRL/turn signal. Still thinking about how going to close above the fogs..RS grille mounts there and they need to stay..

Hardtop is going to be Nightshade Grey Metallic (still working on stripe), and the vert Hyper Blue Metallic with white bumblebee. The vert was really clean with the exception of the quarters and lower outer wheel wells. i opted to patch the outer wheel wells due to the amount of work and structure on the convertibles, combined with the fact the not a lick of rot an inch off the lips. everything will be aligned, cleco'd, and the quarter will be removed to scribe and cut the replacement lip for a clean butt weld..

No. The 5th gen were just to bulky. The 6th gen are a tad smaller, but both are boxy style as well and it just didn't look right all around. We went with mid 90s Buick mirrors.

Took a breather for a few weeks after the stress of getting it out of paint shop. Starting to get it put together. Working way back with the dynamat, made and installed AC lines and vacuumed down for leaks before starting to assemble everything on top of them. Installed exterior lights in prep to start tailoring the harnesses. Also a clip the body shop produced.

John, First off...madd props for what you have built here. I am very impressed with your talent and vision. I have been dreaming up a build like this for a couple years now and am finally getting ready to begin. I was curious if anyone had attempted this level of ZL1 integration and after a quick search I found your post. My plans are slightly different since i'm going to use a Real Deal Steel 69 body, Art Morrison Front subframe, and IRS in the back to help keep that 580 ponies on the road ;) I Have owned both a 69 Camaro, and a 2013 ZL1 and have wanted to merge the two ever since. I am currently in the process of obtaining the necessary ZL1 donor car. You have done so many of the things I was planning to do (Engine, Transmission, Dash, Seats, Door Handles, Main Harness, ABS, Onstar/XM, Parking assist) I was also planning to use the mirrors and sunroof. Curious why you chose not to use the ZL1 brakes? Again great job...this post has already answered a ton of questions I had rattling around in this brain of mine. I look forward to seeing your finished car and will probably have questions when I get head first in it.

Thanks..the donor zl1 we got was stripped of everything but the dash, body harness, bcm, and a few modules....so suspension and brakes were gone. at the time the c6z06 OEM brake kit was the simplest bolt-on (no mods required) for the ATS spindles as well as the torino big ends on the 9" thanks to Kore3..can buy the replacements anywhere if something goes wrong on road. A lot of the mods were done not necessarily to be cool, but more so for reliability and servicability. We would have loved to install the AME IRS had it been available when we started...that would have gotten us wheel speed sensors for ABS/TCS..its all wired in and modules in place just no good sensor solutions..do a search on here or ls1tech. i posted pics of 5th gen mirror taped to the car...way to big for our tastes. Sunroof is a big get if you pull it off...if you plan on using the window modules for controlling the windows through the LIN busses, you will need to toss the sunroof off your wish list. the sunroof uses the same LIN bus as the rear windows (convertible). base BCM calibration of a non sunroof car will allow you to pin in rear window harness without BCM recal....or make sure donor car is a factory convertible and you get it all. GM not to likely to issue a VCI number to your donor VIN adding or removing RPO cals. Good luck! and post your questions.

Looking good man!! I finally "finished" mine, and it's a blast to drive. It'll all be worth it in the end.

Amazing build, it's the million little details that make a project like this. The vents in the cowl hood, did they come from the 2013?

Muth Mirror Systems..the can do custom mirror replacements for most OEM housings with heat and LED. IP prevents them from doing auto-dim...but eventually maybe.
