Roller cam came out in 96 or 97 with the 'vortec' stuff (L29). Vortec engines have steel cranks, 4 bolt, forged rods and steel roller cams. No provisions for a mechanical fuel pump though. I dont know much about the tbi motors, but I think they are all cast componet 2 bolts. Both have non-adjustable valvetrains.

The 98 or 99 L29 I just took apart had a cast crank and 3/8" bolt rods. Did have a factory roller cam.

The 88 -91 454's are all four bolt main with cast cranks and factory 3/8 bolts in the rods. They are still using the old two piece rear main seal. About mid way through 91 they changed over to the Gen 5 big block with a one piece rear main seal, cast crank, flat tappet cam, four bolt main, and changed the coolant passages in the heads. In 96 you get the Gen 6 with factory roller cam, four bolt main, revised oiling system, better heads, cast crank, stock 3/8 rod bolts, and they changed the coolant passages in the block for one last time. Where in Texas are you at? Hope this helps.

Just rebuilt my 97 and it was a steel crank, with little rod bolts (3/8)
