View Full Version : 9" with disc - rotor question

So i'm trying to go budget where i can on my build. I picked up a 9" with disc for super cheap ( $150 to be exact ). I'm new to this so please bare with me. Once the housing has been shortened to size im going to have to pick up a new set of axles, which im assuming the correct thing will be to have them come in the 5/4.75 lug. This means the rotors that came factory will not work. Do they make special rotors i can get to fit the 5/4.75 lug that will work with the factory 9" equipment? Basicly im trying to avoid going with an aftermarket brake setup because i just cant afford it. I've tried and tried to research this, but im coming up with no results. maybe i'm just looking for the wrong thing?

What did the 9" come out of, I'm assuming a Lincoln or similar? If you could find out the original vehicle, maybe the rotor specs could be compare to something similar from GM? Also you could have the Ford rotors redrilled to 5x4.75. You would just have to do it every time you need new rotors.

To be honest im not 100% what it came out of. My pops picked it up at a swap meet and im sure you can picture how the rest of the story goes... I wouldn't know where to even start on trying to identify it. I guess i'll just pop one of the rotors off and see if the parts store can match it to something GM. never hurts to try i guess.

Having a machine shop redrill the rotors to 4.75" would probably be the easiest. Matching it up will be difficult, if not impossible. Parts store computers don't list many details on the rotor, nor do the books. It's more than bolt pattern, it's thickness, OD, hub diameter, offset, flange thickness, MANY factors. There are hundreds of rotors at a typical parts store, and that's not even all the stock typically. Unless you know what the rearend is (such as Lincoln Versailles or Mark Series) and can Google possible interchanges people have done, I would just redrill.

That is one option. I'd rather try to stay away from drilling the rotors if i can. I'm sure there is something out there that matched, or even some type of bracket that will make an adjustment to caliper location that allows for use of some generic GM rotor. i would think with the availability of chevy lug axles and how common the 9" rears are that someone would have made something or figured out a soultion. :dunno:

Ok, so now you're made finding a rotor even more difficult without knowing the original vehicle. We are also assuming the rear disc setup was original to the rear which might not be the case.

There are casting numbers on the differential that will tell you a lot. I suggest finding them and researching on the internet. The information is out there.In my 67 Firebird I am using a 9" diff out of a 65 Thunderbird, I originally had Lincoln Town Car rear rotors with 83 Chevy Monte Carlo front calipers. I have since changed to a better setup, better in that it matches what I have on the front. I am running c6 z51 rotors and calipers front and rear. Talk to Tobin at Kore3. He is the man for what you want to do.

The simplest solution is what has already been stated, redrill the rotors for the 5x4.75 x 2.78 wheel/axle pattern. Depending on the center bore size of the rotor, it may need to be machined or run with a hub-centric ring to fit the pilot register diameter of the new axles.
Finding interchangeable OE rotors from different years/makes/models is not an easy task since there's no guarantee that one exists. That said, trying to do so without even knowing what the original application is makes it virtually impossible. Without the critical rotor dimensions, we can't search by those...there's just a serious lack of information to work from here.

it reads WFV-D5 which is belive is a
Lincoln Mark series 73-76 / Thunderbird 72-76

There is one section which was labeled "NL or L"
I am assuming that is Non-large or Large Bearing? If i am correct, under my axle is says L4?
Also, after a bit of researching I found that Currie makes a cheap-o kit for them as long as I have the new style large bearing housing ends. I called them to see if I could just purchase the 5x4.75 rotors and if they would work with my factory calipers. He said that I would need to know the "break spacing"? I've never heard of that term and wouldn't know how to figure it out or measure it. Any pointers?

Brake spacing, also referred to as the brake or axle offset, is the distance from the outside face of the housing end to the outside face of the axle shaft where the rotor mounts. For example, the big-bearing "Torino" housing ends have a 2.00 x 3.56 rectangular pattern, 3/8" retainer bolts and 2.50" brake offset dimension. The old-style Ford 9" housing ends have a 2.375 x 3.500 pattern, 1/2" or 3/8" retainer bolts and 2.36" brake offset dimension, at least that's the most common, but there have been other variations over the years depending on the application.
