Hi all. I"ve been piggy backing on my other build thread and thought i should separate the two.

95086950859508495083This is how i drove the car all last summer along with the before and after shots of my body mods. The wide body is for the rear of the car and the front is just getting some changes. Its a beautiful car all on its own but there are a few things it like to do to it since i can leave anything alone.

9509195092This is the birdcage structure i created beneath the cardboard resin and bondo. All of this gets scrapped after we get perfect moulds for a reproducible kit. I designed the new quarter shape to accommodate the new 20x12 deep dish wheels with 29" tall 315 Nitto Invo"s and to give the 71 a full length shoulder i felt was missing.

101420101421Hood has been made. Front clip is ready for molds. In the mean time I've started to consider how in going to bring life to the tires. I know the decals are going to be red on the car but I'm still not sure on the overall colour of the car. Black looks cool but it's been over done over the years. Need something different.

Just looking at it I think having the primary color be a silver with some ultra fine flake in it and black graphics would look great. Put black wheels with a polished lip and silver lettering on the tires to make them pop. Black always looks cool but can bury body lines. A brighter color with dark accents puts the lines on display IMHO.

Thx buddy. Enjoyed seeing your ride at the show.

Angelo

Great suggestion Tim. Considered it already and left the idea and then went back to it and so on. I always labour over the colour scheme for months but I find that the very first idea was always the best one. I haven't shared that idea with anyone but the painter and he is all for it. All I can say is that it is going to be more radical than usual and he and I agree that it won't look if its not a full commitment. If I haven't said too much it will definitely be a surprise-even for me once it's done!!

102657After 5 months in my shop and 5 months in Danny's body shop the car leaves tomorrow for the fibreglass moulds. Hood was sent ahead and is already complete and now it's time for the rest. I expect it will take about. 3-4 weeks before the car and the new parts return to Danny's shop for fitment, prep and paint. Needs to be back at my shop for final assembly around Christmas. Hopefully enough time to put it back together for spring. A new 347 is being built for it and a TKO II is going in behind it. Looking to pick up the new front suspension idea I have , sway bars and frame connectors in the near future. Keep you posted.

Body lines separating all the body panels.

Angelo
09-13-2014, 02:41 PM
It will appear a lot more visually stock once its done but i know what you mean about the prototype cars of the day.

Angelo
09-15-2014, 06:14 AM
There is no messing around at the fibreglass shop. The divisions are being glued in place after only having the car for a day. On track for 10 separate moulds being made in the next two weeks. Now we're cookin.

Angelo
09-18-2014, 04:26 AM
Body kit already has a thick black gel coat and the first two layers of fibreglass over it. Going to take about 6 layers to create the mold.

Angelo
09-20-2014, 08:16 AM
Once the molds are finished on the exterior, trunk lid it gets cut open and removed so it can be flipped over to cast the underside.

Angelo
09-29-2014, 03:36 PM
All the panels have been made!!! It took 9 months to get here but know i have a reproducible kit. Very high quality construction. With this resign, they are ultra light weight, impact resistant, fully cured in 48hrs and fit like they should. The piece your looking at was repeatedly hit with a 2x4 where it lay and was completely un damaged. It behaves like carbon-fibre without the high cost.

Angelo
10-04-2014, 06:52 PM
Been 10 months in the making but I have the parts in my hands. Parts are light weight flexible and impact resistant. The high quality resin combined with the level of skill and love for cars shown by the fibreglass manufacturer is worth every minute spent getting here.

Angelo
10-04-2014, 06:54 PM
Hood and trunk will arrive early next week. I will post those shots when they are on the car.

Angelo
10-06-2014, 12:52 PM
Front clip is complete. All the returns and mounting points have been put in. It goes back to the mold to have these mods put into the original mold. When the trunk arrives tomorrow it gets installed which allows me to fit the end caps and from their the bumper/ valance. Then we are given the final position of the quarters.

I got bored last night and drew a defuser onto the front chin spoiler. I might just build one if I choose to track the car when it's done. So far the build is just the street machine but who knows

Car is at a stand still for the last 3 week with my work load picking up for Xmas. I need to be patient till mid December but then it's a race to the finish sometime in June I hope. In the mean time the rubber billboard letters for the tires have arrived. I just lay them down on the tires to get an idea of how they'll look. The stripes will have to be trimmed back away from the lettering an inch or so but I really like the race feel. Also got a yellow set incase the car is yellow in paint. Can't seem to nail down a paint scheme if you paid me. Lol.

Ordered the upper control arm from STC with the built in one inch Shelby drop. Along with the two inch drop in the coil and 3" in the rear I will slam the hight of the car to 48" total hight when I'm done. With the rear stance and being 6" wider in the butt it will be something a little different than stock.

Okay, this is also the right forum for us.. :D You did a great job on that 68 Mustang.. I really like the stripes, I was thinking about doing something like that on mine, I just don't want them to look like Viper stripes like every one else have.. :) I like the way you made them.. What kind of suspension mods did you add to that car?

Angelo
01-15-2015, 10:30 AM
That stripe is from the 67/68 Mustang Transam racing series. It was found mostly on the coupes. The fastbacks usually had the double LaMans style stripes. As for suspension, the front is CPP with a 1" lowered coil and a 1" Shelby drop on the upper control arm. Love this set up! The rear is just a sway bar on lowered leafs.

Protouringstang73
01-15-2015, 11:30 AM
Very nice, I did'nt know that, that's cool! I like that you are inspired by the different racing styles and adding this to your cars.. It's amazing that it does'nt need more than that to get such a perfect stance, looks killer!

Angelo
03-19-2015, 03:33 PM
Thanks for the interest. I am still test fitting and then ultimately fastening them on. Going to be a couple of months. Just so you are aware, they were designed to work with the new rear trunk and rear lower valance. It won't work with stock the set up. If that works for you let me know.

I like it. A lot. You moving away from the Shelby tail light idea?

Angelo
03-27-2015, 08:18 AM
They were too futuristic looking to me. They made the 71 tail pan unrecognizable at a glance and that's not what I'm after. I want the car to have the look of being injected with growth hormones and be a beefier version of a Mach 1 - not a complete sex change lol. Ok they weren't that bad but I always liked the stock light. I just feel like leaving them completely untouched isn't addressing a key feature.

Godbolt
03-27-2015, 01:20 PM
Agreed. Much prefer what you are doing here. The way it is going people will look and think that as cool as these cars were when they came from the factory that THIS is how they all should have looked.

Angelo
04-05-2015, 09:07 AM
The black/ angel eyes headlights i ordered came in and so has the last of my fibreglass pieces, the grill surround so i put them both in. Once i black out the grill surround the lights should blend right in. A little before and after of stock vs my changes

Angelo

D114139Fathers day gift to myself is to drop in my newly built, nasty little 347 and enjoy the look of it in my car and check out the new ride hight with the new dropped tubular control arms and drop springs. I agree with your suggestion. Yesterday I took the air cleaner tray back 2" to expose more of the top of the engine and Monte Carlo bar. Now, on your suggestion I took the curved top above the rad support 1-1/2" back. Flush to the aluminum shroud that came with my electric fan. Improvement. Thx.

Thank you for the compliment. Rear lights on the 71-73 's, to me, are a huge identifying feature. I will not change the overall shape for that reason but they can use an updating. I made these as a quick mock up. Pretty happy with it. It will be lit up with an LED board. The only changes I will make is to thin out the clear portion to make them a little more refined.

Just thought I'd mention that I heard through the grapevine that any car, in Ontario, that has been modified from original needs to be certified before this June of 2016 because the law is changing. Apparently if you currently have a modified car that is already certified, you are ok to drive and continue to plate your car but would have a hell of a time selling it in the future in Ontario. I think this is aimed at the tunner scene but basically effects the protouring cars and rat rods with the same lousy rules. It not only sucks for those of us that like to express ourselves through our rides but what about the whole aftermarket and performance shop industry hit? Wow. I can't say it is for certain but my source is quite good. Can anyone else verify? Sorry to the Canadians for the crappy news.

Your Mustang is really nice !

Angelo
04-03-2016, 08:29 AM
Not exactly big news but it was for me. I didn't know that 69-70 mustang rear spoilers sat higher than 71-73 till I was told by my cousin. Never really noticed. Pedestals are 4.5" tall vs 3" tall. Exactly what I wanted. Simple swap. Just thought I'd share. However the spacing between the pedestals are different so use the wing that's meant for your car and just swap the pedestals. 69-70 is 36" apart and 71-73 is 33" apart. Also the holes for the mounting studs are off so keep that in mind. They will be covered by the baseplate regardless. In my case there are no holes yet but for existing rear wing cars you may not want to put in two new holes.

I was asked more than once why I would bother making a huge car even bigger and I would respond by saying the car really isn't huge. It just looks big. Even with me making the car 2.5" longer than stock it's still 1/2" shorter than a '16 Honda Accord sedan, an 1-1/2" shorter than a '16 BMW M5 and a full 6" shorter than the '16 Challenger. Probably come in at 3300 lbs. And still be wider than most of today's super cars ( except the Aventator ) but not by much lol.

Shot of both the floors being replaced. Friend of mine did a killer job welding them in. Butt joint looks flawless. Took 45hrs but now they're ready for prep/ prime/ paint and sound deadner matting. Also test fitted the center console with the wider TMI foam and upholstery on the stock frames. A little snug but very nice. While he's here we're going to shave the drip rails. Angelo - just went through both your car build threads, you do amazing fiberglass work. I like what you are doing w/ the '71 here.

Just a suggestion, maybe something to consider: looking at the side profile the door handles do not seem to "fit" the look of the car. I think something similar to a Dodge Viper door handle would be aesthetically better. Basically body color and flush on the top of the door making it invisible from the side of the car.

Yes, C3, starting in '68. '68 is one year only and has an exterior push button, the rest operate by the handle only. The 'Vette still has a lock cylinder on the side of the door, they are also chrome.

If anyone is interested, it took 32sqft. of mat to do what you see here which is 8 out of 10 sheets in the box at 25 lbs of additional weight per 10 sheets. Also it cost 350 per box which is 40 sqft. Hope that helps with ordering.

I know everyone has a bias toward colours but I'm curious, what do you see for this cars colour? I've been around the world with the ideas, which is what I did with my 68, and then settled on my first choice which is also what I did for the 68.

Thanks for the compliment. I plan on sticking to the Medium Yellow Gold colour and changing up the stock stripe to this design. Car needs to feel Racy, long, low and sexy when all is said and done.

Yeah, that will look great Angelo. Yellow doesn't seem like a popular colour choice on modern cars for some reason and this will be a nice link to the original.

The other original mustang colour that is s contender is Acapolco blue. My boy likes it. Might help me nail down a final colour lol. Can never make up my mind. Need a few cars I guess lol.

Finally have the brake kit at my shop. Should be going in in the next week or so. Quit the upgrade from 11" single piston caliper. Complete kit from the master reservoir to the new hubs and lines. More than enough for a street machine.

I'm hammering out the front air spoiler. I've designed the ends to sit off the body like their floating. I can't decide if I cut it the same width all the way across like the black and white photo or if I make it run up higher to the grill like the colour photo. Opinions welcome. Also I'm thinking of fabricating it out of a sheet of fibreglass that is pretty impact resistant since it's only going to be about 5" off the ground. The nose hangs pretty far over the front tires so I imagine I will be scrapping pretty often. Aluminum will get banged up too much.

Toss up between these two stripe designs. Leaning toward the lower pic. Hope to get a photo with less distortion than my iPhone. Changes everything.

Godbolt
07-15-2016, 02:09 AM
Hard to say. At first glance I like the top one, but the more you look at it the better the bottom one looks as it clearly shows off the line in the body that runs from the front to the top of the air scoop on the rear fender.

Angelo

Thanks for the feedback Godbolt. Two things I'm sure of is that I don't want to black out all around the car below the bumpers or the hood black out like an original Mach1 and two, I don't want a stripe that doesn't feel like it couldn't have come from the factory. It needs to appear like a possible logical evolution from previous years. The lower image in my opinion gives the front a sort of 70 Shelby chrome surround minus the chrome and it does allow the top body line to be seen. It also visually shortens the car. Not sure I want it to look shorter but it's a great aggressive look. I will try to shoot it with a professional camera so the proportions look less fish eyed. I'm getting great suggestions from a friend Marco who is working with me on on designing the emblem. Another mustang guy with great ideas.

Just my two cents here:
If you choose a color that would be in the "family" of colors you might find on a Trans Am Series car, i.e. the Boss 302 kind of colors, or a color that evokes a feeling of those types, I'd go with the bottom style. On the other hand, if you choose a color that's more low-key, "pretty" I'd go with the top. The top graphic looks like something the factory would put on a GT and the lower more like a Boss. Again, just my 2¢.

I like the stripe in the lower picture- really flows with the lines.

Angelo
07-19-2016, 11:29 AM
That makes a lot of sense. If I was going with the Acapolco blue it would have the c stripe in white. If I go with yellow gold like the 72 Boss it will be a black hockey sticks for stripe. I've actually made some small changes to the lower stripe to make it even more Boss like. Thanks for the reply Optiguy.

Kind of glad I got it pretty much figured out because it's going to mean I get rid of the side marker light since the stripe lands right on it. I may put a small round one above the stripe. Pays to think ahead.

1965gp
07-19-2016, 12:32 PM
I love it- the car continues to look more aggressive.

What about putting the side marker light in the stripe? You could use one off of a 69 firebird or 68 charger. You can paint the housing to match the stripe and tint the lense black? Wouldn't see it until you were standing next to it.

I got a pair of APR GT3 racing mirrors for about $180. They're lightweight quality pieces, but I don't know if the carbon will match what you're going for. Maybe they could be of use on your 68!

Thanks Godbolt I saw those. They're sweet. I'm a little concerned about the fixed angle. It looks like the door on the Camaro has a flatter and wider surface than my 71. It may have the mirror tilting on my car. Not that a pair of wedged CNC'ed spacers couldn't do the trick. I either mod or trick out the stock mirrors or a set of aftermarkets really grab me. Also, and rightly so, they're an expensive alternative. I estimate $1300 Canadian before they're ready for paint. I've already nicked a jugular on this build to date lol.

One of the best build threads on this site. I would love to do this to my 67 coupe, accent the quarter panels more and give it just a slightly less boxy look. Hi Micow. I really like your Bullit tribute fastback. Looks great. My car may look widened but the coupe has stock rear quarters, stock inner tubs and a stock windshield. The rear tire just fits because I had purchased a shortened 8.8 and when I wanted to put the new wheel and rubber on the car I had custom billet spacers made. Tight but no rubbing

The theme of this 71 Widebody build is a Python. A play off the Mustang King Cobra being that this car is thicker and bigger by design. King Python actually. I just wanted to send a shout out to my friend Marco Pezzulli for his great eye for design and making this emblem for the car. Now I just have to build the car to put it on. Lol. BTW VIL AN is not a spelling error. It's representing my name Vilardo Angelo since ANVIL is already being used in the mustang world. Much respect.

What your looking at here is the next step to finishing the prototype of the tail light panel. These are the two 1-1/4" tapered bezel surrounds that will be directly behind the new panel and will hold the newly made lenses while sitting deeper into the trunk creating the desired effect of death. Each red lens will be vacuum formed with a 1/2" pop up but will still allow me to use my LED light panels and stock buckets inside the trunk. All of this is aimed at getting the cleanest updated look with the smallest lenses while still paying respect to the original design.

Well. The prototype tail light panel and lenses are shaping up. Back and forth with ideas between Marco and I and we settled on something with an 1/8" red stripe around each of the three lenses that will also light up With the tail light functions. It's a touch of new school but not so thick. We eliminated the reverse light from the middle lens and are relocating it on either side of the licence plate.

This is the first attempt at making a buck for my rear glass concept. It's going to be a one piece, 3 stepped , louvered plexiglass. It will take the place of the stock glass and the louvers all in one. It will get a dark tint on the underside and stay clear on the risers to look out of. It will also get blacked out for 1" around the perimeter so it can be urethane into place right up to the body lines. Second buck will be modified to better suit the curvature of the roof and trunk lid. This one was too flat. Once we have a perfect buck it will be off to a large oven to heat and vacuum form the plexi into shape. Should be fun. Might have to hijack a pizza joint to find an oven big enough lol.

Angelo

Once the epoxy cured it was separated from the rubber and cleaned up, painted black and joined with the vacuum formed lens that was painted candy red from the inside.

Stock lens above and my new lens below. Still says 71-73 mustang but very different at the same time. Reverse lights will be relocated under the bumper near the license plate. Future project. If anyone was interested in doing something similar the local plastics shop is where I bought a full 4x8 sheet of PETG plastic for vacuum forming at $120 and rubber mould kit and epoxy kit for $200. CNC bucks and stuff is up to you to design and make.

Looking pretty sweet! I am not getting the louvered glass idea, I don't think it adds anything to the look, i'd just put louvers on,
but perhaps here is an idea, embed them into the back so they are more streamlined rather than looking tacked on.

Angelo
01-23-2018, 10:12 AM
The custom glass is just sitting in the opening. It’s not installed yet. It is actually flush to the roof and trunk lid when installed. It takes the place of stock glass so anyone can have one and drop it in. The point is that my Lou era have six small fins that are hardly ever straight, even new, and looks like an add on on top of the stock glass. It also is difficult to keep the flat black clean and it needs to me be out of the way to clean the glass. So overall it basically a less busy and cleaner way to have louvers

So glad to see this thread pop back up as I've been trying to design & decide on doing a rear widebody/ raised quarter panel design on a customized el camino. figured the shape of a 69 dodge charger could work for the upper 6 to 10" of the quarters & spread out the lowers & wheelwell & blend them in.
Was first leaning more towards doing it all in metal, but started back towards considering fiberglass overlays instead. Not quite sure how I want to go about it yet. Not worth the time to do the high quality molds done here for just a one off , so looking into ways to do something in between what was done here and doing something all in place where the final product is heavy with filler. Experimenting with a few spray foams for making a quicker low use mold, but not good enough results yet.
Just seeing a post like this is good inspiration though. Here's some of my design thoughts leading to considering fiberglass again.

Thanks for the interest. I think the EL C with look amazing with a full quarter widening. Mine is 3” per side. If you accentuate the natural shape of the quarter it will look clean and proper. I’m not sure I’d add an upper line. Could get busy. If you have metal skills it would be a nice touch I personally wouldn’t know a short cut to the fibreglass method or I’d share it. Layers really build up heat and I’m concerned you’d have an ocean of waves. My motives for going the way of fibreglass was to make available a kit that never existed for my year mustang. Good luck buddy. Looking forward to the finished product

So are you saying your going to make this kit available?

Also what kind of rods did you use? Ive thought about doing stuff like this but never know where to start. Ive done several fiberglass projects but more Sub boxes, consoles etc.....Those rods look pretty decent sized and bending looks challenging if they are solid. So im assuming there specific rods

Angelo
01-26-2018, 06:32 AM
Yes. All the body parts I made will be available. They are solid rods. Short pieces are hard to bend but I bent them in longer lengths and I used my tire to bend around. Couple of things to note: be sure to make two of every piece. If they are exact you won’t have trouble matching left and right quarters. The longest sweeping curves I did right on the car. By this I mean I welded the front end of a rod about 2” behind the door and curved it around a 3” stud that was welded above the wheel flare. Tack it there and continue to curve it to the back. The flare edge I used 3/4” square tubing. Heated and bent around the tire. Then it all gets thin cardboard hot glue gunned to the rods. Taped joints and 3 coats of fibreglass resin to harden it ready for shaping with filler. That’s how I did it ready for mounds. A lot of work but you now have a reproducible kit for sale if someone needs.

Hopefully in a year or 2 ill be done with my 65 and can go get a 71-73 project and use your kit because that looks awesome and exactly they styling i like and always thought about when it came to the 71-73. Just adding in scoops and a more dynamic front section

Thanks Angelo. What I'm picturing on the el camino project will have the actual quarter panel height higher to near the bedcover height level And have a shape starting from the door something between the 69 charger quarter panel shape & a longer version of yours. Just simple gentle curves, bolder than stock , but that could be mistaken for stock by an unknowing type person.
I'm thinking all steel would be just too time consuming to make so many welds in the center of an 80" long quarter without warping needing extra body filler somewhere before black paint.
I know there is no short cut for a proper repeatable mold, but mine will likely remain a one off as most people just don't have the balls to do such intense work & most el camino owners wouldn't pay for it. So I've been experimenting with ways to make much quicker off one molds that would still need a bit of sanding & filling, but not add much extra weight when done in less time OVERALL. Possibly using 69 charger or other fiberglass upper portion of quarters & filling in underneath to my modified lower quarters. still researching better methods........

It's coming out awesome looking Angelo. When I saw the scope of this project a couple years ago I figured it might never get completed. Good to see you're sticking with it!

1 question, can you see ANYTHING out of that back glass? It's as flat as Kansas!

Angelo

Not a thing lol. I’m installing a screen with a camera and two very good door mirrors. It’s more of a skylight than a rear glass. Just going to have to accelerate when I need to change lanes

You could do like the CRX and have a clear back panel lol

I thought the right side strap looked tighter than the left.
Mustang Masters, Jacksonville, fl is across the street from my work. They have a few early 70's fastbacks sitting out front, rusting to death like all the other bodies they have. While the factory shapes look cool, they got nothing on your enhanced version.
On my elky project, I'm still struggling to figure out what some of my how to processes will be, but the further I get into it trying to come up with available cars to mold part of my shape off of or use part of, working on just going all out & attaching temporary stuff to the vehicle & smoothing out to be a complete mold. Might be a combination of metal & wood strips, glued on foam, spray foam, cheap lightweight filler, g-2 spray filler, & actual paint to make a mold like you had done.
Only shortcut I may have is possibly being able to use some commercial 20 oz spray foam I can get from work sources to use as the main part of a mold, with extra supports of course. Every type I've tried leaves huge voids, but if I spray about an inch thick & squeegee down first, it pushes out air & becomes denser.
Also, sample of crappier softer type accepted body filler well, so I may be able to much more quickly make mold with denser foam, smooth it, & have a mold ok for a few uses that could be less overall time than making a great mold, though still needing light bodywork.
Still experimenting, but having your thread pop back up again got me thinking to do things differently.
Wondering did the shop that made your parts use a general poly resin, vinyl ester, or epoxy for the final parts that you said too a beating ok? Now that it's black & shiny, I'm anxious to see some various shots of your new quarters for inspiration to me.
Right now I got 2 main inspiration sources, yours & a rendering which is on my flicker link now.

I really don’t know which type of resin he used. I know it’s an expensive one and not a general purpose one because he needed it to handle some serious flex testing he does. Your way is doable I’m sure and no matter what all fibreglass pieces need body work. It comes with the territory. I’m at a lose explaining any of the process that involved the mounds and parts because I left him the car for 10 days and let him do his thing. It is a dirty, smelly and time consuming process. I can however tell you that after I shaped everything and was ready to mend it into the car, the panel bond of his choice is LOCTITE AA H3300 2 part epoxy. I bought a special gun to squeeze it out but it’s very versatile once you learn it’s properties. For example in the case of a lip being too short there is really no strong way to build it up but this glue does. If you put it along the edge and wait for it to skin over you can still pinch it into shape before it hardens. It can then be sanded and body filled and holds primer and paint. It is expensive but necessary.

Car’s cut and polished. Working on graphics colours and layout. Should be getting it on the car by the end of the month.

looking great!!! I actually may be getting a 73 this weekend. Funny thing is ive been toying with the idea of taking a FOxBody front valance specifically the Cervini one and splitting it down the middle to make it fit the front. It would have a bit of a similar look your front. Granted it will take a lot of work as well but it would save me a lot of time too

Keep up the awesome work, look forward to seeing it finished

Sounds cool. If you have one it would be an exercise in making it work but if you have to buy one it doesn’t look cheap. If you like the way mine turned out you can PM me and I can make you one. It should at least line up under your corner eyebrow pieces and blend into your fenders without too much trouble. You’d still have to play with it a bit but if your willing to make a fix fit this should be easy work for you.

Colour flops from flat black to almost bright silver depending on where you stand. Car feels alive as you walk around it. Couldn’t get it all done in 11 hours. Need one more day to complete it.

Wow! It looks great. I love the graphics.

Is it sitting at its final ride height?

Angelo

Full weight not in the car yet so I’m thinking there is some adjustment to be done. Slightly lower up front and out back. Not air ride so it needs to be a drivable set up.

Thanks. It's a good looking car. I like how it still retains the factory lines, but enhances them. The paint is amazing.

By the way I decided to go mostly all steel on my widebody project, but I still look at a few saved pics of yours for inspiration to carry on.
