This is just the beginning of my latest project. It a 1967 Dodge D100 shortbed that's getting a Gen III Viper engine, trans and rear end from a 05 Ram SRT10 chassis I bought. I also hope to use the brakes and anything else I can.

What is the difference in wheelbase?

72BBSwinger
05-02-2014, 08:50 PM
You look close at that frame and you can see that the front section with the 4 body mounts is spliced into by the rear rails with the rear 2 body and box mounts. Point being, the front sections are all the same for all wheelbases of the 1500's. I would use that new frame and do whatever needed to make it work unless you're wanting less weight. $$$ wise that would be an excellent choice since the SRT10's have a huge following as far Mopar aftermarket support goes. Edit: I've been wrong many times before, actually upon looking closer, there are 2 splices and the middle section is what needs taken out and the rear cab mounts would still be the rear cab mounts on a standard cab and the middle cab mounts would get the boot.

I don't think a direct bolt on is in the cards. Not only is the wheelbase off by a mile, the track is wider, plus the height is a major concern. The chassis is being delivered tomorrow, I will be doing a lot of measuring to see what my options are. I probably won't get started on it till the winter, I have to finish two other cars first, then I will be able to hit it hard.

Not a lot to update, but I did have the Dana 60 narrowed 6", and I have been trying to figure out how to use the large (15") front brakes on an aftermarket Mustang 2 type suspension. So I decided to design up my own spindles to use the SRT front hubs, discs, and calipers, but they have the same geometry as a set of Wilwood Pro spindles.

Wow this is very cool! The suspension and powerplant is awesome! I too have a Dodge truck that I'm hoping to make into a pro-touring truck but mine is a '77. I've contemplated on doing a '97-2004 Dakota frame swap so I can have updated drivetrain, brakes, steering, suspension, etc...but if I do something like that, it will be years from now.
I'm definitely subscribing to this! Last year at the Car Craft Summer Nationals in St. Paul I saw a '78 Lil Red Express with a SRT-10 Viper engine in it...the truck had a lot of patina and was a really cool rig!

So I ran into my first snag.....About a year and a half ago when I was designing my spindles, I found all the dimensions on line for the Wilwood Pro spindles. So I used that geometry to make mine, perfect, Right!. Well the problem is I used the Wilwood 2" drop spindle figuring I would need all the drop I could get, WRONG! The truck is actually Too Low! The combination of the crossmember location, and the shape of the chassis, makes the center of the chassis 3" off the ground.... The front section is fine at 5", but 3" is not enough clearance for New England roads. So there are a couple ways I could fix this, I could notch the chassis where the crossmember mounts, but this would weaken the frame, with 500+HP on tap, really not an option. I could modify my existing spindles to gain about 1", but still not enough. The right way to fix this is to design new 2" raised spindles (or really "Stock" height). It sucks, but it's the right way to do it. Actually the designing is the easy part, having the parts machined can get expensive, luckily I have a friend that runs a machine shop, and treats me good on price. So, the design is done, and parts are being cut, in the meantime, I'm starting on cleaning up the rear frame rails.

As it turns out Dodge bodies are not exactly level with the chassis. I had been working on a level chassis, but today I dropped it on the ground and the rear was a little low, like 4 inches. Not a big deal at this point since the suspension is not welded in yet. Although I could have gotten away with a smaller notch, it's easy enough to cut them down. The most important thing is the proper stance.

Just for the heck of it I created a mockup model of the rear panhard bar in Solidworks to check the amount of side to side travel. According to my calculations ( measured from an arbitrary line ) the top of the shock stroke ( 5" ) gave me a measurement of 2.160", to the middle was 2.264" and the to the bottom was 2.160" so that equals a total side to side movement of 0.104". I can live with that...

So I've been working on the dash, laying out all the switches, filled in the speaker grille, and installing the AC vents. At first I was going to go with Billet vents, but a good friend advised against it, seems that they condensate like crazy when you run the AC. So I picked up some Ford OEM vents off of Ebay. I wanted to fit them flush to the dash, so first I designed up a ring to fit the vent into, then I 3D printed one to check the fit. Then I had a friend CNC 2 rings for me, I welded them into the dash, a little body work, and their ready to go..144258144259144257

Today's adventure came by way of my new center console. I designed it up, then had a local sheet metal shop cut it out of 12 gauge steel. They used a laser to cut it out, what a beautiful job that machine did. The width of the cut is only .007" and the edges are perfect, no burs or slag of any kind. OK, I know I haven't posted in a few weeks, but I've been working on a new project, a Cold Air Intake. Of course with a project like this, you can't buy anything off the shelf ( unless you get lucky ) so you have to build your own parts. Instead of buying aluminum tubing and welding it together, I decided to try something different, I 3D printed it. I designed up the pieces, printed and then epoxied them together. Then wrapped it in a carbon fiber sleeve, and kept coating it with epoxy and sanding until I got it flat. Next came 4 coats of clear, then color sand and buff. Actually came out pretty good....

That seems like an amazing price for a 3D printer that can go that big. What are the limitations? Like layer thickness and stuff.
Can it do multiple colors of materials on the same piece?

These machines have really come down in price lately. This one can go as fine as 0.05mm/layer but would take a very long time to print. I did the gray elbow at 0.25mm/layer and it took 48 hours to print. Mostly because of the support structure it has to build to hold up the shape of the part. Single color only.

Peter Mc Mahon
08-31-2018, 06:36 AM
I’m no expert either so take my guesses as just that, but I think the front suspension will not handle as well as it could. Ride height would need to be raised until lower control arm is level. Also, when you showed the pic of the suspension sitting on a table, was the shock at ride height? Because if so, the shock would be heavily compressed with the control arm compressed. Again, I’m no expert but I would block things up at current height and install my shocks to see it travel and ride height look good

Mike, can you post the paints and products you're using at some point please? And a pic of the cardboard box and hairdryer!

The paint is PPG "Son of a gun" gray, the clear is Kirker Matt clear ( love this clear ). Not sure about the cardboard box and dryer.?

Awesome! Thanks! I'd like to do my inner fenders the same way... the cardboard box and hair dryer was a joke from another thread about how to cure paint. Sorry.

btw. The very first car I ever drove was a 67 D100... on my great uncles lap when I was 5 or 6... same color as yours! LOVE THE BUILD!!

Finally moving on to the bed. Got the wheel wells cut out, and the inner halves all cleaned up and ready to go back in. First I got to make up some new bed mounts to replace the old ones.

Are you going to use wood or something for a little model pickup ?

You have enough clearance to the wheel well when bottoming out? I love this truck!

We'll see, I can raise it if I have to.

Work on the bed is progressing. I had to cut out the recess area for the license plate in the rear pan. The plate goes in the bumper so I won't be needing it and it was hitting the rear crossmember I welded in to protect the gas tank. Unfortunately I had to remove the tailgate to get at the rear pan, in doing so, all the bondo that was packed into the rust hole began to fall out, so now I have to rebuild the bed corner. Opened up a "Can of Worms"

Finished rebuilding the bed corner, it took 5 different pieces of sheet metal to get all the structure back .

It's Hump Day! Got my axle cover welded in. I had ordered a cover online, but it came in made out of 18Ga. sheet metal, kinda flimsy. So I went to my local sheet metal shop and had one bent up out of 14Ga. same as the floor. Also decided to 3D print the bezel for around the filler neck, then welded a steel ring to the floor to bolt it to.
