Someone is offering me a block that is believed to be out of a 69 COPO Camaro, along with a set of properly dated 840 heads. :naughty:

I will be checking it out today to verify the casting number and engine codes, and I was wondering if anyone can supply me with a ballpark figure of what I should be paying for this, if it is not damaged, and is still re-buildable. ?

$1,000-$2,000 for the shortblock.
No more than $800 for the heads.

The above depends on condition.

If the engine did truly come out of a COPO it is worth the most to the person who owns the car with the VIN number on the block. Many times sellers will ask a fortune for a "512" four bolt main block with a COPO engine code stamp. In reality, if you do not have the car, the engines just a regular "512" engine. IF" there is a VIN on the block it worth more to the car owner than anyone else. Why pay for something (the engine stamp) if it has no benefit to you. Of course it's rather easy to restamp a "512" block to a COPO engine code and sell it for more money. That's been done more than once!

"I" would not pay any more for the engine if it had a COPO code unless my goal was to try to find the car. After all, all the block really is a four bolt main, "512" casting block. There are lot's of those 69 model year dated blocks around if you start looking. The value of the heads is far less than they were in the past. The only people looking for "840's" are the restorers since there are much better heads available in the aftermarket for not much more money.

Ah, come on Mike, you and I both know that motor will not end up in a original COPO, at least not a original COPO unitl it is restamped to match the nothing car it is going in. There are a rumored 500 COPOs built, and 5000 are sure to exist now.

I agree with Mikes figures, maybe a bit more on the block if it is a early desireable date. The heads are real common as they are also 396 / 375 heads.

I guess I never told you the story about buying the COPO block 10 years ago, and 50 state searching the body and finding the body in Virginia. It ranks in my top 10 kill stories.
