in the ealy stages of panel replacement and fabrication and would like to put the fuel filler in the middle of the tail panel with a cool cap, (be cool) instead of behind license plate. is it as easy as getting a 68 tank and filler neck and cutting the hole? will everything line up? will the trunk latch and support be a problem? thanks in advance for any info.....gene

I will be mocking up a very similar set up as soon as I get a fuel cell. I will let you know.

It should be pretty easy.

For a stock gas tank it would be easy. If anyone is installing a fuel cell it could present new problems. I might not be able to get gas into my fuel cell if it sits too high. The gas might shoot back at me. I am going to try and recess the fuel cell as much as possible but dont want it to set on my exhaust.

im thinking it should be easy enough. get a 68 tank, straps and filler neck, custom cap and start cuttin. fab up a hump to cover it all. would love to see some pics if anyone has already done this. i just think it looks cool with the exposed cap, as long as its not a 3.99 tin job with the red "stant" logo showing. but something kina hi-tech looking, maybe billet to go with the marquez lamps......

I recessed my 20 gallon cell from summit but it was still too high, the bottom of the tank is even with the bottom of the tailpan and I had to sit it up higher because the car was too low and the box was hitting my diff cover! didn't have exhaust problems because I am running my pipes along the sides of the recessed box. you may have more of a problem ... didn't you want centered exhaust tips? here are some pics. sorry, didn't have time to clean it:drool:.

Thanks for sharing the pics. Great memory by the way too. Yes I want to center my exhaust and I will fab up whatever it takes to make it happen. Im just stubborn like that.
Hmm just what I figured. It looks like im in for a heck of a battle with my fuel cell/ gas tank situation. Oh well bring it on!! Nothing I can't figure out one way or another. :box:
Mabey I will just buy another 67-69 stock gas tank and see what I can do. I will just mock up my current tank first. Mabey take the stock one and raise it into the trunk enough to clear the exhaust.

That fuel cell hangs down lower that most people would want to put it. These pics dont help for what I am doing but they might help z06fromhell. There are several good pics on page 10.

it depends on what size fuel cell you want. The 22 Gal is only 9" deep. They have one that is 35 gal and 13" deep. Those 4" are where you run into trouble. The fuel cell actually rests a little more than 1" above the trunk floor because of the square tubing used to make the basket.

Wow I would be happy with just a 15 gallon. But 35 gallon! :scared:
So the one your using is the 13" deep fuel cell?
OH btw. Bad ass car!! Ive seen it on occasion but never complimented you on the progress. Is that one of the drift Camaros?

killer car... thanks for the link. this is the look im going for, but im not nearly dedicated enough to do the fuel cell. i am trying to find a stock 67-68 tank to mock up if anybody has one. i agree the cell hangs way low for my taste. its a bad azz race look, just not for me.

That is EXACTLY the look I want. Besides, if the car gets hit from behind Id rather have that mass of gas under the car going forward than in the car.

The car in the pictures is a Silver State Classic car. It started out with a supercharged LS-6, but he sold that to a black 69 that was just in either Chevy Hi-Performance or Super Chevy Magazine. You can see the new motor in the later pictures. The fuel cell is the 22 gal - ED122 from Fuel Safe. It has a foam-filled bladder with a surge tank. You can also get the gas cap, filler neck, and related items from Fuel Safe. That car is on the west coast. I am on the East coast, although my car follows alot of the same cues.
