i'm new to the world of pt, used to drag race, so having a big converter was a good thing to launch the car out. in the pt world, what are common stall sizes/limits?

I would stick with a fairly tight converter, although you can go a little more than stock, especially if you are going with a modern transmission and lock-up converter. I'd say 2200-2400rpm.

ok, thanks. looks like i'm gonna try out the stock stall and see how that works. it's a 4l80e that i'm putting into the car.

Keep in mind that if your engine is more powerful than whatever engine was mated to the stock transmission, the effective stall speed will be higher than "stock."
