This was my partial solution to front speakers for a second gen f-body. About 10 bucks to do (minus speakers) . This mod will accommodate 4 1/2 mids and locate them where the air vents go. You will lose the function and use of vents. I know that 4 /12 may not be ideal for some but my firebird only had dash speakers in the front so I think this will help a little. I used some smooth birch wood 3/4 inch but other types may work. I also used some plastic food containers from the dollar store for housing. I routed/ beveled out the edge of the wood/enclosure so that I can snugly adhere the enclosures into the air vent recess.

In my previous 2nd gen I removed the whole kick panel plastic and installed 6x9 speakers to air vent hole. The sound was really good, but it get really hot in the car during summer if you plug those air holes.
