I thought I would start a thread on our latest project, so you guys can see what we are up to. We are builing a C10 truck for the upcoming season, and will hopefully have it ready late summer early fall before it's debut at SEMA 14'. I will get some more build photos up soon. But here is the rendering that Ben Hermance did for us almost 2 years ago. Here is a small little list of what we are doing to it. I look forward to your feedback and comments...good or bad. :)

Awesome. 3 things.

1) I are the wheels on the truck in the mock-up - 18s?

2) A Currie 9" floater with "locker" What type of locker, I've "heard" stories about them being harsh on track and upsetting the vehicle. Could you expand your choice?

3) Are you doing anything to the t56? gear cut, coatings, etc?

Thanks,

1.) The wheels that are on the truck are merely mock up wheels, they are 19x13 Forgelines with 345/35 tires, are actual tire size is a 335/30/18 We should have the new wheels shortly and I will post pics once we get them.
2.) The lock is from Randy's Ring & Pinion, we have not used their style yet, we've always used Detroit's and been really happy with them. I will give feedback on the new one once we try it out. Wish me luck on that one ;)
3.) The trans is from a Viper GTS that we had Anaheim Gear do a custom build on, also installing the all the viper guts into a GM case, while still using the Viper Tail Section. It was built back in 2012 for us, I would have to go back and look at the details for what all went into it. I do know with what we did to it, it is basically bullet proof.

I was curious about the t56, as I have a stock Magnum - which I love. But an not a fan of 2-3 shift, but it could be me.

Looking forward to the 18" square stance, as that is on my current build list too.

Again, cool project.

I am very interested in how this performs. I have not seen any trucks with the Detroit speed set up running yet and would like to see how it compares to others in the marketplace. I would expect it to be awesome coming from DSE. If you bring it to Scottsdale when you get it done, I would love a ride in it.

Here are a few of the fab photos from the suspension. In the rear you can see how we C Notched the frame. But my goal here was to keep the frame design looking "stock" by matching the angles and widths of the frame. Now on to the remaining pieces of the rollcage for the rear, finish up the coilover mounts, and pan hard bar and the rear is done.......for the most part.

Rob,

Honestly, I post many on this website but I have yet to make a website of my own as of yet. I usually attend anywhere between 6-10 of the Good-guys shows throughout the country during the year mainly shooting the autocross events. I'd love to work it into some freelance work here and there but haven't quite figured that part out yet. I took over a 1,000 pics at the Scottsdale event a couple weeks ago but haven't posted a link to those as I'm looking into what sites would work best for that amount of pics (dropbox, shutterfly, etc). I hope to attend a couple USCA events as well this year. So for now I'm just getting as much experience I can taking pics of all the action taking place throughout the weekend.

What size tubes are you using for the roll bar?

He are running 1 3/4" .120 wall for all the main bars, the interior cross bars and dash bars are all 1 5/8". I know it adds a fair amount of weight. But our main concern with the cage is safety, and I will sacrifice a few pounds to walk away from a bad wreck, which I hope we never have. But you never know right?

What Rob said.

Thanks for your interest guys. I'm just getting a few things organized. There will be a build thread, it will have two stages. The first will be preparing the truck to run in a Targa Classic division (based on a stock chassis) and the phase two will be a full chassis for the Open Targa, I have hired Ron Sutton to design a few things. It will remain a plated street car... err truck.

If there is enough interest, I am going to do a thread about preparing and running race like the Targa Newfoundland. It's a monster and the only Official Targa in North American, 1400 miles of open road race over 7 days.

Anyway, I don't want to hi-jack...

Rob, your trucks are awesome. My current steering is based on what you did. It was your first truck that put me on to AGR.

Ok....now that is pretty awesome to say the least. Let me know when you start a thread about it. I'm glad you like the AGR box, they make a huge difference over a stock box that's for sure. We've really put ours through the paces over the past few years and it still works like it did from day one. They make a pretty reliable product. It has exceeded my expectations.

Question: who's blade style rear sway bar did you use?

And Agreed. I was very impressed with AGR's quality and Matt is a great guy to deal with. The difference is incredible, all the Subaru guys I race with thought I put in a rack... And here, as we've been talking about it and this might be helpful to others - this is my thread on the install.

Correct, It is a hotchkis rear blade sway bar. We modify ours to give us a wider range of adjustment so we can fine tune that sweet spot in the rear suspension.

will it spank Rob (No limit) truck?

Who knows?? Rob's "Hellboy" is one bad ass machine. It would be a huge feat to give that truck a run for it's money. But there are a few big factors

- Rob has a bad ass tube chassis truck
- Rob's truck is seriously dialed in
- Rob has a massive amount of seat time in that truck

My main focus is to build a really cool truck that handles well and out performs camaros and mustangs ;) It should be pretty quick, now we just gotta figure out how to get the loose nut behind the wheel to make it all work together. It will definetly be a huge learning curve for all of us, it is nothing like our other C10. The only thing that is like our old truck is the body. I don't think we will be too disappointed in the performance of the truck, we are using a bunch of "proven" parts and some "experimental parts. But I have a good amount of faith the truck won't make me look too bad out on the circuit.

Very Cool. I like the way this is coming together. Do you think you will have any rubbing issues with the front tire that close to the fender? I have not measured backspacing many times for fitment, so I am just curious how you determine how much room you actually need for when you have the wheel turned and you are cornering hard.

Love it! Is that a satin black or grey, I can't tell.

PCHRODS
05-28-2014, 01:02 PM
Its a matte charcoal metallic.

In response to the turning radius.....we basically took the coilover out and cycled the suspension in every possible direction with a set of 345/30/19's which are about an 1" larger in all directions on the tire. We ended up with about an 1" of clearance everywhere with the 335's. So we are looking great as far as room goes. It shouldnt touch anything anywhere.

Yes, the headlights are DOT approved. The light output is really clean, they are not blinding to oncoming traffic. Kind of like the newer german car headlights, they light everything up from the headlights down and have a crisp horizontal cut off in front of you. I don't think I will drive any of our cars without them. We have them in both of our C10's they are well worth the money, I assure you.

PCHRODS

Those rear brakes are actually full floater hub assemblies from Baer Brakes. Much stronger for racing and less bearing load. We will be running a BAER 6 piston rear caliper and a 14" slotted rotor.

ever thought about moving the radiator to the back?

PCHRODS
07-14-2014, 04:14 PM
That is a very valid question, that i have been asked a few times and The thought had crossed my mind. But I thought about whether or not moving 20 lbs to the back and all the extra plumbing would be worth the amount of work it would take to do it..... The answer is probably yes I should have. But I didn't want to lose the whole "streetable" truck appearance factor with having to create ducting and ventilation in the rear of the truck. So for now it will live up front, I know later on I will probably change my mind as every builder/racer does.....having the "need for speed" and what's it going to take to get it perfect....Then I will reflect back on this post and say, "yes, you told me so." LOL

ever thought about moving the radiator to the back?

I have a truck and have been thinking about doing it as well. I wonder how much weight it would add? Do you know of any write ups on it?

Wouldn't mind a fiberglass front end as well to save weight but too pricy and they just dont always look that good.

Not sure of any write up on it. It would add weight do to the extra plumbing and fluid capacity, the only real benefit would be weight displacement.

I finally got around to finishing the tonneau yesterday. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I know some will ask what the seam in the rear is about..... the front section of the cover tilts up like a normal tonneau to access the bed, shocks, battery, fuel system, etc. the year section is fixed mounted for the fuel filler and the rear aero is attached to it. This way I won't have to undo the spoiler everytime I need to fuel up. I wanted that stuff easily obtainable.

I like how you tucked your rear down bars into the rear B pillar. I did not want to get into paint, so I didn't do it.

Odd question, is this built to a spec? I was looking at your design when I did mine and all my rules require at least one corner-to-corner diagonal bar in the rear main hoop.

It really depends on who's specs you are referring to. I don't think I will get too much grief on the cage it has more bars than it really needs. If I can't run because of my cage, then.....we go to an event that we can run it. ;)

Yes, the bar is actually recessed into the rear sheetmetal below the window and then there are two slots cut out in it for the belts to pass through. I wanted to achieve the tightest possible configuration i could, as we all know there isn't an over abundance of room in these cabs

Red truck? you may have me confused with Rob MacGregor. which does happen from time to time, He's rob, I'm rob, he runs a c10, I run a C10.....I could see this easy mix up.. but He is running a red 69 C10 with I believe 18x11 or 12's on that truck. But if I am mistaken and you mean our Black and Copper Truck, that one has 19x10 and 19x12's front and rear. The C10R has 18x12's on all four corners...

Well, we received some disturbing news the other day. We had bought an LS engine on ebay from a GM dealership, ad said 9,000 miles with valve train noise. Which I was cool with, because we were planning on replacing all the valve train anyways including heads. So I went down this route because it was cheaper than buying a new one. I even spoke to the guy on the phone before purchasing, explained it all to me...blah blah blah to say the least. So I decided to tear the motor down on Monday so we could start building it. I took the Left head off and to my amazement I found 2 cracked pistons, pretty much making me want to throw up. Then I took the passenger side head off and same thing. So I came to the conclusion the valve train noise was actually piston pieces bouncing around in the cylinders. So needless to say I got the short end of the stick.....Unfortunetly I purchased this engine about a year ago. I took the guys word for it, bad idea. Back to square one on the engine. which sucks because we don't really have the budget to be buying motors left and right. But I have to get the truck done...so the search is on. Anybody have a aluminum 5.7 or 6.0 short block they want to donate to the cause? LOL

Yup. No matter how much time you give yourself, you end up down to the wire. I find you start with one mission in mind, then as you work through it you go "that could be better" OR "what about this?", not to mention "how the $#%& did that happen?!?!?". All of which lead to a more kick-ass end result AND less sleep. sigh.

these don't bolt into the factory spots, I preferred to have larger seat hardware than the factory bolts, so we made a slightly wider base and used 7/16" hardware. They would accomodate just about any after market seat.

Don't get me wrong, i love the GMC trucks too, but we have to start somewhere right? I happen to have 2 67 Chevy trucks so that's where we started....we'll expand in do time

SEMA 2014

Thursday of SEMA, the final 10 OUSCI Golden Tickets were announced. We stood patiently waiting to hear Brandy's named called. It had been one of Brandy's bucket list items to race at OUSCI, but she never had the opportunity to do so. I had attended the event back in 2010 with my '69 C10. I really wanted her to experience the event first hand, plus it was a good opportunity for me to stand back and watch how the C10R handled.

Optima Batteries decided to have some fun with her and conclude the press conference after announcing 9 Golden Tickets. Finally after a good laugh, they announced that they had forgotten one last participant, in which the C10R and Brandy would move on to compete in the 2014 OUSCI at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Needless to say she was in tears (with excitement of course).

SEMA Ignited

Saturday and Sunday brought on the real challenge; competing at OUSCI. We had only taken the truck out twice before this; a couple hour shakedown at Adam's Motorsports Park and then the NMCA Hotchkis Autocross event in Fontana the weekend before SEMA. Our goal while competing at OUSCI was to 1. hope the truck settings were good enough to get Brandy through the three events (the truck was literally finished while on the way to SEMA and there was not enough time to dial it in for OUSCI) 2. Hope nothing breaks while on track and 3. make sure Brandy kept away from those famous k-rails she likes so much.

OUSCI Hot Lap Challenge

All-in-all we couldn't have asked for a better weekend. The truck did great and we see huge potential for 2015. With some more seat time and the right adjustments , the truck shouldn't have any problems keeping up.

2015 brings some new twists and turns to the C10R. We will be announcing some new ventures with the truck within the next month.

We have also started posts on social media called C10R-The Things That Make It Work. With little spare time to post updates on the forum throughout the build, we wanted to go back and reflect on all the parts we used to make the C10R handle and function the way it does. We want to take those social media posts and elaborate in this thread on the parts used and the people we want to thank along the way. Starting next week we will start our first feature on this segment and many more to come throughout the year.

Our plan was to have the C10R Debut video during SEMA, but we were slightly overwhelmed with the video software we purchased. Now that we have had a couple months to play around with the software, we are happy to announce the first PCHRODS C10R Video is finally live. Check it out and make sure to check back on our social media sites for an announcement on our race calendar.

Thought I would share this video of Chip Foose driving the C10R at Del Mar Goodguys. Keep in mind this is his first ever driving experience on an Auto-X Track, and his first time behind the wheel of the C10R

I stayed till the end to see the helmet come off. Until this I was calling BS. That was an awesome first run. Did he mention what car he would be building to have one of his own to race? He's a natural.

He had a case of beginners luck I keep telling my self, he was only a couple seconds off me and brandy. Needless to say I have some work to do, if would have had a couple more cracks at it, I probably would have hung my helmet up ;)

Zach, here is the link for the firewall, DIRECT SHEETMETAL (http://www.directsheetmetal.com/) The fire wall portion fits really well, the toe board portions take a little planning to say the least. Over all it was a really nice product and I would buy one again without thinking twice. It saved us a ton of time.

The C10R was a factory LWB truck, It was already shortened when we got it. We had to do some tweaking to the way it was done. As far as an open house goes....not sure when the next one will be. But we'll be sure to post it up on here when we do

I was just doing a search to get some ideas on my 67 and ran across this thread, and I had to join to my my input in. I absolutely Love what you did here... every square inch of this truck is just beautiful.
I don't know what it takes to be able to pull something like this together, but I do know whatever it is... I don't have it.

I'm in the middle of restoring a 67 and I would love to do a few of the things you've done... especially the hood. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind maybe posting a few pics of how it came to be since I didn't see and pics in the thread. I know some people don't like their ideas being "stolen", but if you don't mind, I would LOVE to do something similar.

Thank you, and again... GREAT JOB. Ill be looking for this truck to be able to see it in person someday.
