MotiV8r currently has an ATI 917780 harmonic balancer and it has come unglued.

Has anyone ever had a problem with one on a Gen 1 SBC?
Did I just get unlucky or are there issues with them?

I have one on my SBC and have never had an issue. I would contact ATI.

What do you mean it came unglued?
Do you mean the bolts came loose that hold the dampener to the crank hub? The bolts may not have been loctited
ATI is one of the best out there, you can buy replacement parts for them through ATI.

That is shocking, I would contact them and go from there. I got the feeling they are king of the hill for balancer's

No experience with ATI, I have run Fluidamper for years. That said I would also call ATI as they are SFI certified and should not come apart like yours.

I have run several of them with no problems. I am curious what unglued means also. They rebuild them pretty cheap and fast turn around. I have always bought blems off their eBay store for $199. Normally they have a small spot in the paint but have a new warranty.

I gotta ask, 1st Gen SBC? When did you install a 1st Gen SBC? I thought Motiv8r was running an LS motor.

Gen 1 SBC. Dart Little M block with a Compstar crank.
It never had an LS in it but if I had to build it now it would.

We had a truck with a knock up front. I found the balancer would move when I tugged on it. I assumed the balancer was cracked, it turned out the crank snapped through the first throw & front main. It was a stock cast crank, nothing performance.

That's funny David. My Bro-in-Law had the same thing happen on one of the family el Caminos. That guy was all thumbs and elbows working in cars.

I was told by Scat tech support that they do not recommend running an active harmonic balancer such as ATI or Fluidamper with their cranks because they have seen some broken cranks which have been attributed to those type dampers.

Scat recommends a conventional damper with a non-movable elastomer cushion between the hub and inertia ring like this one.

Any update on the damper failure?
And to followup with Scat recommendation - this is from one of their publications:
"Fluid, balls, springs, inertia rings with rubber O-Rings, etc. Can you balance a wheel on your race car if the tires are flat???? How
can your rotating assembly be balanced if to quote one manufacturer, “These units (Dampers) should not be on the crank
for balancing as the inertia weight may not be centered until the engine starts.” NEWS FLASH!!!! Centrifugal force will always take
the inertia weight off center no matter what RPM. Your assembly is never balanced. TELL TALE SIGN!!!! Metal transferred on nose
outside diameter and damper internal diameter . . . A fatigue crack starts. SNAP!!!! The crank breaks"
I thought the primary reason for a damper is to dampen rotating harmonics - now I suppose some of those harmonics is coming from an out of balance situation - but if the "conventional" damper is not perfectly balanced isn't it going to do the same thing? Seems like the ATI/Fluidampr is trying to dynamically offset those harmonics since they probably are different for every rotating assembly. Curious what ATI or Fluidampr would have to say about this.

I'm kinda curious to find out more about this balancer subject. I have a nice Fluidamper and a conventional style Professional Products damper and I would really like to know which one I should use on my new under construction 383. For now I am inclined to go along with Scat's recommendation.

I haven't had the time to uncover the car and get to this yet. Maybe in a couple of weeks. I'm really hoping it's not the crank.

Steve, I wouldn't use the Fluidamper, they were originally conceived for low rpm diesel engines and imo are not good for gas engines. I've seen more than 1 broken crank from them, the fluid can turn to a solid mass inside which will result in a broken crank.

I am currently running a Fluidamper 6 1/4" with my 383 gen 1 sbc and have had no problems. I was told that to run the lightweight aluminum flywheel I had it was recommended. Now it is hooked up to a flexplate and a button style dual disc 7 1/4" clutch and it is doing well there too. I would have gone with a larger damper but it wouldn't fit.
Make sure you check both the engine parts manufactures and the trans/clutch manufactures both and see what they say too.

So we've heard from Scat now Fluidampr:
"Silicone fluid is a very good damping medium because it is relatively unaffected by temperature changes. It provides consistent damping in both winter and summer. The fluid will not deteriorate if the Fluidampr/Streetdampr is not used for a period of time."
and,
"The silicone fluid in the damper will deliver consistent performance over the entire range of operating temperatures in any operating environment that the damper will encounter."
So, where is the truth, Scat, Fluidampr? If the Fluidampr is truly a problem what is the failure rate? So far all the comments seem to be anecdotal. I'm not defending either one but I'd sure like more real data to base a decision on.

So how do we determine which damper to use? I have both style dampers and now I am unsure which to use on my new 383 build. The more this thread goes on the more curious I am about Motiv8r.

Why Does Fluidampr Use Silicone?
The engineers at Vibratech TVD, the parent company of Fluidampr and inventor of the viscous torsional vibration damper, have perfected the use of silicone for over 65 years. Without looking, some assume the fluid in a Fluidampr should be like motor oil or hydraulic shock fluid because that’s what is commonly used in other fluid dampening devices. This leads some to believe that our silicone turns to a gel over time after cutting a used one open. However, this is torsional vibration from internal combustion we’re dealing with. The silicone Fluidampr uses is 45,000 times more viscous than 30W motor oil!
Truth is, it’s a gel when we precisely fill the damper housing on the assembly line and it needs to be a gel to do its job. Fluidampr performance dampers and Vibratech TVD heavy duty dampers are rated to -40oF. They can be found protecting engines in the frigid cold of the Alaskan oil fields, to the non-stop abuse of heavy construction equipment, to the blistering heat of the race track. Viscous engine dampers are the preferred choice for premium engine builders and are stock equipment in supercars such as the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo.

-We get asked time to time about the “Scat damper recommendation”. My guess is they would rather sell their own elastomeric dampers vs. supporting a superior viscous damper. Saying that Fluidampr is to blame for broken crankshafts is completely false. It is much easier to put the blame on the damper manufacturer when a cheap offshore crankshaft breaks vs. identifying the true root cause and warrantying the crankshaft. We have never been notified or have seen any of these so called “Failures” which leads me to believe it is more false information, it is always someone who heard from someone. Viscous technology is currently coming STANDARD on such powerhouse cars as the Lamborghini Gallardo, Ford GT40, Audi R8, McLaren and the new Ferrari. It is also seen on 95%+ all heavy duty diesel engines including class 8, agriculture, locomotives, military tanks and many more industrial applications. This is proven technology with over 65 years of experience, we know dampers.
-71RS, you are correct that viscous damper technology was originally designed for low RPM running diesel engines, in 1946 actually. But you are completely wrong in saying they are not meant for gas engines. Viscous dampers have been used on many gas engines for the last 30 years with great success. Our Fluidampr lineup currently fits around 6,500 gas powered vehicles. During our many years we have done extensive research, testing and dyno runs on many makes and models to ensure the product we produce, here in the USA.
