I would like to share with you a few picture of my 13 year old sons truck project we are working on together. His plans are to get it driving within two years for high school by robbing some parts from my 67 el camino. I will post his ideas for it later. For now here are the pics.
Enjoy looking, Chris.

Cool project. My 13 year old daughter wants the same truck as her daily driver when the time comes. It's great to see the youngster having interest and keeping the hobby alive.

Nice I love father son projects! just make sure he is earning some money and respect for the time that it takes to make this happen. I know how hard a 13 year old attention span can be and it really gets to be to much to handle and finding the fine line of teaching him and not burning him out of spending to much time and not enough progress can really be tough on a kid and yourself! you have embarked on a great project and I hope you guys the best!

Really awesome! Had a 51 when I was younger and miss that truck. Even better as a father/son project. Good luck!

Thanks guys. He was very happy when he got in from school and got to see everything. We are both very busy and each have some crazy hours. Me working weekend nights and building a street rod for a friend on the side. Him going to the gym at 530 in the morning 2-3 days a week year round, school, and off season football practice rt now. He has just added a girlfriend to the mix and he still tries to keep in touch with friends and cousins thru his xbox. So we are lucky to get an hour or so together each week to work on it. I prefer him to work on when he wants to rather than me forcing him. Works out better for the both of us.
Here are a couple of pix of him working on deburring the block for his build.

His plans are for a lower stance with a somewhat aggressive look to it. Will be painted satin black while he is in school and then we will see about what color from there. But he likes Black and gunmetal gray together. The frame, motor/trans, and drivetrain will be gunmetal. Interior possibly red. As of now he has stolen 2 of my 283's to make a single good engine from and worked a deal with a friend for a 2004r trans(to be rebuilt). We talked about 2 weeks ago and he would like to put the Holley Terminator system on it. I insisted on 4 wheel disc brakes, he nudged for Wilwoods and I believe we will be going with D52's in front and D154's in rear on a 12 bolt chevy rear spinning 3.73's.
We are still undecided on which bed we will be using. His stock bed is for the most part trashed, so we have looked at later model step side beds to modernize the look but we have not committed to that look yet. His plan is after it is built and he gets used to it's characteristics he would like to take it to Ft worth Goodguys and autox it at least once to see if he enjoys that as much as he enjoyed watching it last spring.
He has set back Christmas and birthday money to buy parts and swapped out his labor for money to get parts. So he has got some skin in the game on this one. I just want him to enjoy spending some time with me building and hopefully learning something that he can enjoy doing the rest of his life. And I enjoy the time we spend together, it will make for great memories for him one day.
Hopefully the complete floor pan I ordered in December from Brothers will be in in the next couple of weeks and we can begin some of the reassembly. I will post progress pics as we go.
He did rub it in today that he got Ridetech coilovers before I did. So I think I will get dibs on driving it first. HAHA!!!
And speaking of Ft Worth GG, he is something here was proud of. He got to meet Bret and get his signature, on a 1969 Camaro snap tight model he had just assembled at the model building event. Then we went and watched some more autox, Bret had just made a pass and Chad announced about an autograph session so off he went. He loves that 48 hour Camaro, but was sickened by the crunched fender that occurred there. Bret thank you for signing this kids model, he treasures that car.

My wife and I have always liked this style of truck, I even drove a friends 50 model a few times in college and liked it. Nick loves it but wishes at times it was a 55-57 his favorite style. But this is what we found. We bought 2 at the same time. This 5 window and a 3 window. He wanted the 5 window to build which was fine with me, 5's are more valuable to people but he just liked the looks. I told him I will pay for the majority of it with you earning the right to those parts with his labor and time and when we are done enjoy it because he will have earned it. But that is still a long way away right now. The three window may become a ratrod project later on mated to my 57 tbird chassis. I am calling that idea the B*stardBird. The wife just rolls her eyes. Lol.

This is awesome. I know the feeling of father/son bonding cause I'm doing the same with my Dad building my car. And theres no better way to bond than building building a bad ass car or truck with with your Dad or son. Totally gonna watch this build.

Thought I would upload some pix of the suspension mock ups and tacking it into place. Be gentle on my welds. I know some are booger welds but I am learning as I go. I remember some of the things my Dad taught me about welding but still learning. Lol.

It has been quite awhile since I updated this because I haven't been able to devote any time to it. My father in law died last summer and the last 6 months I have been trying to deal with his estate and my jobs, and trying to have some family time. I am exhausted to say the least. A quick note and proud dad moment in all this. My son is 14 and a freshman on the Jr High football team. After his regular season was over he and some of the other freshmen were invited to play up on the high school team. This team went all the way to state championships but lost the championship game. But what a ride he had! Memories for a lifetime. Here are a couple of pics of him and his sister(a senior this year), and one one of me and him.

His parts truck in the snow looking like a Christmas card :

Now on to what little I have gotten done in the last week, just some basics of finishing the welds and beginning to set placements for the rest of the parts. I am not welding in the upper shock mount bar until I get the fuel tank in next week to test placement between the frame rails and clearances. Still need to notch the frame for the rack and pinion so that can be mounted. Then finish rebuilding the rearend and getting the axles plugged and redrilled for 5x4 3/4 bolt holes and studs. It's not much going on right now but getting back in the swing of things.
Enjoy, Chris

My first real project was a '52 3100 that Dad bought for me when I was 15. I hope you guys finish yours in less time than it took us! I was over 30 before finishing it............... We got distracted on a few other projects and I went to college, got married, had kids................
This thread brings back memories... I'll keep an eye on the progress. Keep up the good work.

Awesome. Good to see he's starting young, more kids these days need to get into cars/ trucks at an early age. Sure lights a fire under me to get a move on with my '47 Ford F100 truck.

Thanks for the replys everyone, Brandon and Drummer, great looking trucks and an inspiration to continue. Brandon I see your truck started about like my sons , Lol! I hope to get time in the next two weeks to get more work done because the kid is having knee surgery in 2 weeks. He won't be fit to throw a wrench at for a few weeks after that.

He can park it out front the local Old Navy and really mess with people....Aren't those '50-'51 trucks inside?

More than likely Justin. I really don't know though to be honest. I have only been in one of those stores once. I try to avoid malls and shopping with a passion. When I have to go I watch people for amusement.
But it could be utilized as advertisement when we are done with the right business. Lol..
I will get some new pix up next week. We got a little more done this past week. Moser reworked his factory axles this past week and returned them so we are a little closer to a roller. I have to fab a transmission xmember and then the eng/trans will be mounted. Fuel tank is mounted. we are working on some mods and ideas for the body and interior so that will slow things down.
He also had to have knee surgery today. Repaired some damage from football last season. So he will be out of commision for a bit.
Enjoy, Chris

Decided to post a few update pics. Not much getting done due to weather and taking the kid back and forth to dr and rehab appointments after his knee surgery a dew weeks ago. All is well now damage repaired. He still has a little way to go before he can resume his off season training. We also just returned from Washington DC on vacation this past week. That made me miss my shop time. While on the road trip he and I talked about his truck and plans, this also got him excited again to work on it. So maybe in 10-12 tyears we might get it finished!! Lol.
Enjoy looking at the painfully slow progress.

Chris this is an awesome father/son project and like one of the posts mentioned, yer a good dad for doing this.I'm sure it's just second nature and all but from one dad to another I had to say it.That being said my son is 12 now and looking at my 69 Camaro in an entirely different way. He's been giving me a hand working on replacing the suspension this winter which made me happy to see he's taking some interest in the old car...but now he's starting to come up with ideas of his own for the car! LOL
This is a great project...keep it goin"...cheers

I am fully digging this build. I am picking up a 51 3100 this weekend to build my wife her dream truck (but come on... we all know HOW it will get built... the way I want). I wish my old man taught me about cars, however he did teach me about building homes instead.
Can you tell me what that front crossmember is off of? I have a huge background in Rockcrawlers, but this is going to my my first heavy hotrod build. I was hoping ot go airride as well, but that front member confuses me.
Thanks

Dima,
The frame is the stock 51 frame lightened of all unnecessary parts, with front and rear coilover suspension from No Limit Engineering. The No Limit suspension comes with everything you need and very few options required. Very well thought out and engineered. Included Ridetech coilovers with the kit. My son and I are very happy with the product and Rob and Tina have been great in answering any of my questions. This was my first major suspension install like this and it went smooth. Go look at their web site and call Rob, he can answer anything you need. Also they have complete chassis' if you prefer.
Also, the suspension is offered as air ride as well.
No I am not a paid endorser, just a satisfied customer.
Chris

Nothing fancy here, just making brackets and getting it to fit hopefully. The Gen IV ac unit and heater control valve have been mounted together will order hose and fittings later tonight to make the mod similar to DSE and GRNOVA. Thanks for the pictures on the one thread explaining how to do this mod to keep as much behind the firewall as possible. Waiting on some other parts to mock up before finalizing anything in concrete. It is much easier to mock it up like this with the floor and most of the side missing. Lol. Once the electric wiper conversion checks out I have to measure to see how close it will be to mount a stereo in the center of the dash and also the gauge unit the kid has selected from Dakota Digital. Nothing easy with this one but hopefully it will all be worth it in the end. It's very cool I can get him to work on it when he can and to see him enjoy the idea of what we are accomplishing together. That's what it's all about anyway! Enjoy just a few more pix of the AC mock up.

great work on the truck and getting kids involved with cars and or trucks! I know how my son is he wants to build something and thinks this will only take a couple of hrs and ends up taking weeks and they get frusterated easily and just want to give up so it is our job to teach them how to take there time and it will be worth it in the end! Just a word of caution with the 4" grinder and a hoodie sweat shirt the strings for the hood are a dangerous thing! never crossed my mind as I had a grinder try to remove my face when the draw string caught the grinder wheel and ripped it out of my hand and ended up on my face! keep up the great work it will get there the memories are what matters the most!

Wayne, VA now sells a sure fit for this model truck with the genIV . Before it had been the gen II. I liked the controls better on the gen IV andI am building this from scratch so any sure fit would be a waste of money. Heck I didn't use the brackets supplied by VA, made my own to make it simple. It's because I sometimes just sit a stare at the carcass of the truck while working on it and devise a plan. Make cardboard templates to size and work around everything. The best part was when I read the article here on pro touring about how to route the hoses on a VA unit I saw a unique way to keep it all behind the dash. Credit to DSE and GRNOVA.
Here is the link. https://www.pro-touring.com/threads/82095-A-C-fittings?highlight=
I just like trying tofigure these things out and to make them work. I will be repeating the process on my elky, so it will come in handy then too.
I didn't think about the strings on his hoodie. Bad dad!! I should have since I used to work with lathes and mills and no loose clothing at all around those puppies. I was just hoping he would not catch himself on fire like I did a few months ago when using the grinder and some sparks caught some oil on my jeans on fire. Yep fun times.

Nothing spectacular yet, but the floor is tacked into place. The kid is getting excited about it and want's to move on to body work. Lol, I told him we will get there just not right now. He has already picked out colors and a paint scheme. Now if my work schedule and family obligations(and broken down old body) will cooperate we will start moving ahead a little more regularly.
Enjoy,

OK, again it is slow progress. We have only manage to get floors in and a few patches. Decided to trial fit to the chassis and check a few things. will mount doors later to check fit soon and build the toe boards and firewall around the engine and transmission. All for now.
Enjoy Chris.

I kinda wimped out this summer do to the heat out in my shop. I know it is no excuse, but between that and my son's football practice and prep that went on most of the summer we did not get much time to work on it together. Now we are in the middle of his season and some cooler temps will help. Locating the cab on the chassis helped to motivate him this evening. We have also been teaching him to drive his SSR which will be his everyday driver when he turns 16 next spring. Releasing him with this scares me more than the SSR because of all of our work going into it. Lol. We will still have quite a to do before that time comes so maybe he will quit scaring me. He loves the sound of his engine what it feels like going fast so it is all bad!!

We can't fault him for that, that's why we do this stuff. But being on the parent side of it is quite scary.

10-07-2015, 09:07 AM
Are you going to brace the chassis in the middle behind the cab?
bmbrzmn101
10-07-2015, 09:38 AM
A section of the original brace is still there. I had to remove a small amount to clear the No Limit Eng. 4bar rear mounting points. But there is still ging to be some additional bracing. One reason everything is being mocked up, so I can check clearances before I just start adding more parts. I am also going to have to mock up the entire engine accessory serpentine drive to determine what has to cut in the inner fenders and to determine the thickness of the radiator with condenser. Yep still a lot to do.

That's a nice looking pulley system, its going to look great on there. How much room would there be if you were using headers? It looks pretty tight.
bmbrzmn101
10-21-2015, 03:45 PM
Wayne, incredibly tight. Gonna have to resort to block huggers. The serpentine setup is a wide style vette/muscle car style from street and performance. They are literally 2 miles from me. I also had them build me some custom mid length headers for this 383 stroker to fit my elky, hoped they might work on the kids truck but no way. So I will be selling them soon sad to say to finance some block huggers. Street need to modify the bracket for the AC side to fit the compressor properly. Will have that back by next week. My son and I will the fit the front end and doors in place to decide how I am going to build the inner panels to fit everything and also decide on steering column placement. Yep, lots of fun building a hot rod from scratch rather than restoring something where all parts magically fit. Lol.
Enjoy, Chris

Just a few update pix. Busy with holidays, family, and work. Also most of my spare time has gone to parting out my dad's 57 thunderbird which is slowly funding the build. My son and I have managed a few evenings to toil on the truck fitting parts and checking clearances and deciding on design aspects he wants. All and all fun! Without further adieu.....Enjoy!

Those are some nice parts you have going on there. Permit oh boy he'll want to get at it now!
That accessory kit is going to pop against that color on the engine. It's funny I clear coated my LS and I'm going to put some gray or black to tint the clear and spray my acc. drive. Have fun.
bmbrzmn101
01-16-2016, 05:29 AM
Wayne, I saw an LS3 at Street and performance the other that their entire accessory drive section with acc. was black powder coated. I really want to go that route with this truck but I already had it in chrome(dangit!!) He has already been giving me more input the more time he puts in to it. He spent a couple hours with me one night after he got out of off season practice and designed the panel design on the firewall. We had fun with that. He wants to learn more so that is great. Now the permit and driving thing is just getting him wanting more, lord help me! Lol. We are going to try to get some time next week to build the long block and document and record all clearances and part numbers so he has a record down the road of what parts he has if there are problems. The cool part was when I was explaining how the Canton oil pan functioned with the baffle door and the light went on in his head and he understood it. That was worth it. And as to the parts you saw, those were the rear brakes. The front brakes came in last week along with the Wilwood master cylinder. To say the kid was excited was an understatement. Just hope they help keep him out of trouble.Enjoy will post more after further progress.

Thanks Wayne, I hope it does once all is completed. I am using black AN fittings and hoses to accent the look. The chrome will only be on the engine and no where else on the truck if we can help it. Just thought I would update this thread a little. Work shifts have changed for me so I have not had the time to work on the truck as much as I would like. But the kid and I get to it when we can. But he last couple of weeks we have gotten a few little things dealt with as to seat choices and locations, steering column placement, interior design changes firewall and toeboards mocked up, fabbing the firewall recess this weekend and hope to start welding in after turkey day! A noticeable accomplishment for us was with the work changes we have been able to start slowly acquiring parts for the build. I am afraid he has become addicted to the brown truck pulling up and dropping off toys. Just going to leave a few pics for your viewing pleasure. Just remember everything is still very fluid and mocked up for any changes or alterations, so if you notice anything hinky it's all ok.
Thanks, Chris.

I love lt! The gauges are sweet! As far as the brown truck He's a real car guy now. That Efi is going to look great on that motor and go nice with the truck. Any update is a good update!

Thanks Wayne! when I showed him the Stealth Terminator there was no further debate about systems for EFI. Just looking forward to getting more work done with having weekends off now so the kid and I can work on it together.

We are still working on his baby. Making slow progress. I have really enjoyed teaching him some of the skills he may need for his addiction. So far stripping paint, and sanding are his favorites(strange kid). Here are a few pics of some of what we have been up to. Mostly gathering parts, final fitment of custom touches and front end repairs.I know my welds are not perfect, so be nice. Lol
Cheers, Chris

A small update. Last week my son and I bought a bed off a 2005 chevy truck. We are going to modify it to fit his truck . We will be mounting a set of original style step side fenders for a 51 onto these bedsides. We cut the floor out after washing it out. Still have some small prep cuts to make. The bed rails will be narrowed after the suspension is back in the chassis and we decide how much to narrow and how to mount the bed. The tailgate will be narrowed also, I just have not decided if it will be welded shut or continue as a gate and engineer it to be a waterproof bed like his SSR bed.
Enjoy, Chris

These were taken about two weeks ago when the door panel kit and design parts came in from Hagen's. The kid was excited to start designing his interior and door panels. Also included a shot of the frenched headlight bucket and new headlight to smooth the design out a little.
Cheers, Chris

The kid made it through his prom last night and this afternoon we placed the bed on his truck to determine how much will need to be cut and modded. We will be narrowing the bed by 14-20" or so, I don't know yet if we will shorten it any yet until I decide on if and how I will make a tow bar for it. And as you can see in one pic the lower fenders on the front will need to be trimmed to clear the running boards, which will also have to be fabbed from scratch. Once I can purchase the rear wheels I can decide the actual width and wheel well placement. We are going to keep his original style rear fenders to keep the stepside look. Lots of cutting to go with a lot of measuring to take place!! I may not live long enough. Lol
BTW, the bed and cab had not been leveled when these pics were taken. We still have that to do before measurements are taken.
Enjoy, Chris

this thread is awesome!!!!
I wish I could have had this type of experience with my dad. My son is only 3 and I kind of fear that by the time he's 16 all of the cars will be driving themselves and hotrods will be illegal to drive on the road. Until then, I let him do everything...even though I don't know much myself.

Peter, we have tentatively located the brake and throttle pedals and yes it will be a tight squeeze, but throttle pedal will be fine. Brake pedal arm may have to be bent or re engineered for final pedal placement. Everything we do causes so many other changes. This is why I wanted him to be a part of this build. To understand some of the engineering challenges and how to solve them.
Thanks, Chris

So I finally got the new rear fenders and have them mocked in place. I still need to cut the sides for the fenders to fit and will need to narrow the step side fenders. But it is starting to take shape and look like a truck again.
Enjoy Chris.

Great fore thought to picture this, it's looking good. Did you cut the piece of the bed in front of the rear fender to pull it out to contact the running board?

Actually, I just trimmed that front of the lower bed side to clear the running board support and shear dumb luck has them fairly close to what was going to be a "well what do I do here? and how do I join these areas?" type of dilemma. It still needs some minor trimming, but I also have to fabricate the running boards from scratch once the fenders are welded in. I keep asking myself why I am doing this to myself, with no better answer than I am enjoying the challenge.

Good answer. I'm the guy that says "if life is going to be all about common sense, you may have to leave me out". :)

Lol, I am usually always the common sense guy until it comes to cars, planes, guns, and women. Other than that I am somewhat your normal pycho social individual.

Just a little word about lack of progress. The last couple of months have not been kind from the project gods. Between vacation, helping some friends with things, moving my girl back to college, my son and his football practices and games, and that pesky wife wanting to have the occasional date, not much has occurred. I have begun some body filler work on the bed and measured and cut the tailgate close to the width needed , I just need the finish trim and weld. The bed has been a major time problem for me because it requires so many little mods, but it should be worth it in the end. The kid has not been able to get out and work on it as much as we would like but that is life when you are in high school, football, and have a job. Lol.
Hopefully soon I can begin posting a few more updates. The weather here is fantastic and has me wanting to spend longer time in the shop, it's just those pesky little things like family, work and life that get in the way.
Cheers, Chris
