Really doesn't have to be a 400 just looking for a poncho motor with 300-350 hp for my 68 bird. Don't really want to go as big as a 455.

I just looked at Craigslist and there are a few in the atlanta area if you want to drive a little.

Thanks for the link, but that's way out of my price range.

I don't know what your budget is but I have a Pontiac 400 that is rebuildable by going .065 over or mild hone, bearings rings, gaskets low budget style reusing parts. Currently it's out of the car as I have gone with a roller cam 428ci Pontiac setup. I built this engine 20 years ago while in the Navy. Was originally a 2bbl 400 economy out of a Grand Prix. Pulled it also because of mild rod knock. Probably needs bearings for a cheap redo. Oil pressure was 25 psi at 750rpm. Normally it was closer to 45psi if I remember right. Specs are the best I remember are:

Edelbrock 750cfm carb
Number 16 big valve heads unported ( I think put in stainless valves can't remember right now)
Comp Cams 1.65 roller tip rockers
068 factory Pontiac camshaft 212/225 at .050 duration 448/449 lift with the supplied rocker ratio.
Regular Performer aluminum intake. One bolt hole needs helicoiled by water intake from radiator should be fairly simple
Single point distributor Old school style
Factory rods with ARP bolts
Replacement cast pistons
Factory Pontiac Oil pan
High flow waterpump with proper Pontiac divider plate.
60psi oil pump
Stock 3.75 inch stroke factory crank
Factory replacement balancer and associated items.
You probably will need pulleys as the stock ones are wore out.

You can have it for the cost of shipping, crating etc to your location. The reason I'm giving you this deal if you choose to accept Mission Impossible style is because I really don't have the space as a single Dad in a townhouse in the Boston area. And though I respect LSx engines I think there are too many boring builds out there with them. Was going to build a back up stroked 488 but that can wait for a more suitable time. I apologize for the far away picture but for some reason I can't upload. Send me a PM if you like. Have a good day.

Thanks for all the offers but shipping 6-700 lbs of cast iron across the country is proving to be too expensive a proposition. Really need something local so it wouldn't involve shipping and so I can see what I'm getting into.

There is one that pops up on Montgomery Craigslist every now and then. He wants $1000 for it, but I believe he will come down.

Found some local 400s. Neither seller knows much about the condition. Both have been sitting 10 years or more.

The first is a 1970 400 with a 2 barrel intake and # 16 heads, ran 10 years ago when he parted out a wreck that he bought.

Second 400 is a 1968 with #15 heads believes its out of a bonneville, he bought several engines from a guy as a package and doesn't know it's condition.

Third option is a 350 bored 60 over built last summer. With #16 heads. Says. It's a real hot motor gas to run octane booster. That's the good news, bad news it has one cylinder only registering 125 on a compression check and the rest at 170.

Which is the best option? Prices are within $200 from cheapes to most expensive

Silo84 , you might want to check out www.performanceyears.com (http://www.performanceyears.com) they are one of the largest Pontiac forums with deals always popping up.

www.transamcountry.com (http://www.transamcountry.com) would be a good place to search also..
