I finally pulled the trigger on an LS motor, so I now have a 383 SBC for sale. I’m offering the engine complete from oil pan to carburetor including ignition and accessories. I built the engine in 2005, and it has approximately 8000 miles on it since. The car was stuck in paint jail for nearly two years from late 2006 to 2008. It was also on jack stands for most of the 2010 and 2013 seasons while I waited for wheels to be manufactured (both times). It makes excellent power, is extremely reliable, doesn’t burn oil, and sounds killer. High quality parts have been used throughout. Highlights of the major components are provided below.

The short block is based off of a late-model GM block with roller cam provisions, a one-piece rear main seal, and four-bolt mains. All machine work was performed by JD Engine & Machine in Columbia, MO. The rotating assembly is a forged 4340 Eagle crank and H-beam rods, and flat-top SRP pistons (4.020” bore). Cylinder heads are AFR 195 Eliminators with straight plugs and 65cc combustion chambers; the heads were purchased and installed in 2008. Static compression is 11:1, and it runs just fine on 91 octane due to the cam. ARP fasteners are used throughout, and external fasteners are stainless steel.

The cam is a custom Comp hydraulic roller ground on XFI lobes. Duration at 0.050 is 242°/248° and valve lift is 0.584"/0.579" (with 1.6 rockers) on a 110° LSA. Lifters are Comp Cams Magnum series. An AFR Hydra-Rev kit helps prevent valve float at high RPM. It idles at 800 RPM with a choppy lope, but still has great street manners. I can lock the torque converter up on the highway at 2200 RPM and cruise with no bucking or surging.

Ignition is all MSD including the distributor (mechanical advance only), Digital 6AL box, and Blaster 2 coil. Plug wires are black Taylor ThunderVolt 50s.

Fuel delivery is from a 750 CFM Holley HP carburetor with mechanical secondaries. There is no provision for a choke, but it starts right up after two pumps of the pedal. I tuned the carb with an Innovate Motorsports LM-1 wideband air/fuel ratio meter. The fuel curve is spot on with no off-idle or part-throttle stumlbes. WOT will pull down to 12.5:1 for maximum power, while cruise is in the upper 14:1 range with no surging. I can provide the buyer with my LM-1 tuning logs if interested. This engine is literally ready to drop in and drive with zero tuning required.

The front accessory drive is a black hard-coated Vintage Air Frontrunner and includes A/C, power steering, and a 140 amp alternator. This is the best engineered serpentine system you can buy. The power steering pump is currently setup for an external reservoir (not included), but an integral plastic reservoir could easily be added (also not included). A list of all parts used in the engine and included in the sale is provided below. Note that the part numbers correspond to Summit Racing unless noted otherwise.

Cost

Complete Engine Including Accessory Drive - $6200
Complete Engine NOT Including Accessory Drive* - $5200

*If you do not want the Frontrunner, I have a Weiand high volume aluminum water pump that I will install for the indicated price.

This is a fantastic deal on a high-quality engine. If you price out everything included it would cost over $12,000 to replicate. Please don’t hesitate to reply or contact me with any questions. I have additional build pictures, and I can easily get a photo of a feature that you’re interested in. Thanks for looking.

What are HP and torque numbers ?

AFR claims (https://www.airflowresearch.com/chevy_dyno.php) 517 ft-lbs and 503 HP for a similarly equipped 383. My engine has a slightly larger cam and more compression. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

I've had others ask as well. Currently, I don't want to separate unless someone chooses to buy the engine without the accessory drive. The primary reason is if I remove the accessory drive, then I can't run the engine for potential buyers.

You should add a video of it running.

Here is a short video of the car idling before I put it away last fall. I'll get an actual video of the engine as soon as I get a chance.

Thanks. The exhaust is 2-1/2" with an H-pipe through Flowmaster 40s dumped in front of the axle. It would sound even better in your car.

Here's a video showing engine start-up and a pan around the engine compartment while it's running. Sorry for the amateur camera work. Let me know if you have any questions.

Beautiful sound and nice set up. I have a built SBC all done and dyno'd and I'll PayPal the money ASAP if you get a buyer who doesn't take the front runner. I know others have said they'll take it but I'd have the money in your account in minutes if they don't move fast enough,

It's a great deal and I can see you spent a lot. I'm right in the same area and mines just a nice 350 so there is no way someone can build this for what you are selling it for. This is a Steal of a deal.

GLWS.

If you decide to separate, I would take the heads, rockers, and rev kit.

This appears to be a very well sorted out and tuned setup. It would be a shame to see it split up. I paid a comparable price for a similarly built 406 but with cheaper trick flow heads and no rev kit. This is a pretty good deal.
