View Full Version : Project Dark Knight: 750whp LSA 68 Camaro Track Build

Decided to repost/rename my original thread to better suit my project name. The build has been coming along very well and should hopefully be on the track by the end of summer. Chassis is fully built with all DSE parts and Strange aluminum third member. Cage also got done recently along with Ididit column and Sparco steering wheel and seat. The motor was completed last week which was very exciting to see. My wheels should be in sometime soon and the "project name" will make more sense when they get fitted. They are 18x12 and 18x11 CCW LM20. The centers are satin black and the hoops are gloss black. Already have the huge BFG Rivals sitting in the shop ready to go on. Going to take a little fender massaging but we're going to stuff the 18x11 with 315-35 on front.

The crew at Dusold Designs is doing an amazing job so far and definitely blowing my expectation out of the water on this build.

Next step right now is to get the T-56 Magnum ordered so we can get the engine and trans in the car to start plumbing. Should be one hell of a fun car when its done. I do plan on making it street legal. Which will probably get me into a lot more trouble than I want.......oh well

Plan is satin black and possibly gunmetal stripes down the front fenders. Up in the air about the stripes. Paint will most definitely stay black though

Finally got back in town and made it by the shop today. Cars looks amazing so far. Tranny and Wilwood pedal setup are ordered so engine should get stabbed in a couple weeks.

Few more shots that I got. Front fenders haven't been messed with yet. Not on the priority list as of now.

Little bit of an update. The guys at Dusold Designs have been pretty busy lately with a lot of other badass muscle car projects that we had to put a short hold on the 68. Right now the engine and booster/peddle assembly is being mocked up. Once we're happy with the mock up and booster placement the engine is coming back out and a nice smooth firewall with some fancy bead rolling will be next. It has been very exciting to see the motor in the car though.

Car looks great. I'm installing Lingenfelter pulleys on ZL1 motor similar to yours, but having trouble with tensioner mounting, as interference limits me to the 10% pulley. Not sure I understand your belt routing for the blower belt. Looks like a large and small idler but no tensioner? How does that work?

OH, I THINK I SEE. YOURE USING FACTORY SETUP WITH TENSIONER TO THE OUTSIDE PASSENGER SIDE.

Also, which throttle body are you using, and is it ported and polished too? Who'd you use to port and polish the snout? Thanks.

I appreciate it. I'm really happy with what they came up with. Definitely gives tons of eye appeal and character compared to a smooth firewall. Mike also came up with the idea to cut out one of the dimple die holes and use it to run all the harness wiring through. Should be pretty clean.

Yah, I hear ya. The original plan was to build it to a 7 at best but after letting Mike and the Dusold team kinda take over the build, that hasn't quite been working out. They take a lot of pride in the amazing work they do and I'm definitely not going to get in their way about it. Build it to a 9 and talk myself into driving it to a 5 I guess.

How hard was it to change the firewall up to accommodate the triple pedal setup?

As far as I know it wasn't any issue at all. With the single sheet of metal they used for the firewall they just cut out 3 holes and made custom mounting brackets. Mike may have a better explanation though.

The trickiest part is the spacing between the column on the inside and the engine on the outside. The firewall brackets have to be made but if you have fabrication and welding skills it's not too bad, just a little time consuming to get the spacing right.

Progress on the car has been very slow due to funds lately. The price per barrel of oil unfortunately is taking a big hit on my profession. I will post up some pics of where we are now with the car. It's actually extremely close to being drivable and I'm crossing my fingers hoping to be able to do so in the next couple months or so.

Few more updates. All the plumbing and wiring is finally done. The motor got fluids and break in oil put in today. Andy from ADM Performance is going to throw a tune on it tomorrow and it'll get fired up for the first time. Still have a few more days of little things here and there. Planning to be able to drive it next week and take it next weekend for some good test and tuning.

Made a little more progress today on the bare essentials to getting the car able to race. My brand new GM ecu turned out to be bad so we've been waiting on that in order to start the car up. As of now all we lack is an ecu, a tune, exhaust and bleeding the brakes. I'm really just trying to get the bare minimum done in order to start getting some seat time in. I'll worry about the extras and cosmetic stuff later.

Got the car on the dyno last night to do a few small pulls and some tuning. Needless to say it got very intense very fast. It ended up making 705whp at 14 lbs of boost on a mild tune and pump gas. We still have a lot of timing to play with along with filling it with race fuel. Expected numbers after break in should be around 760 or so. The torque curve is absolutely insane. It made 600 tq at around 2600 rpm. The power comes on so instant its unreal. I did get a video of it for you guys.

I really appreciate the kind words guys. I couldn't have asked for a better setup.

Ran my first event yesterday. The car did awesome. Still going to take some time getting used to the rear wheel drive power since I'm so used to racing the Subaru. I did end up winning CAM that day (mainly because Dusold ran in X class) and put down some pretty respectable times.....so I guess so far so good. It's awesome to see the "classic" scene grow more and more at these events. Other than mine, the Dusold 67 Camaro was there along with Mark Nemati in the twin turbo 65 mustang, Greg Scherer in his Trans Am and Chris Moore in his good looking Maverick.

Congratulations. Must be nice to finally drive the car.

What are you going to do about the inner fenders on the front?

We talked about just building some kind of splash guards. It would be pointless using oem ones since they would have to be cut up quite a bit to accommodate tires and ride height.

Haven't posted up in a while so I thought I might drop in a little update. Not much has changed on the car other than miles and tire tread depth. So far I've done about 7 autocross events in the car and its been a freakin blast. I'm getting a lot better at managing the ridiculous low end power and getting pretty comfortable with the car. There is still a lot of things I'd like to do cosmetically but for now all my focus has been going into seat time. Looking forward to the Goodguys Lone Star Nationals in Oct. Excited to try out the new Rival S as well.

Actually dont have door mirrors yet but when I eventually decide to get some I will have them coated the same as the door handles.

As far as the interior I will do carpet and door windows. Our local CAM class consists of all my close buddies though in which the majority of our cars weren't fully CAM legal last year. If I ever race somewhere where I think someone will cry about it then I'll make sure its legal. I prefer to race with guys that are there to have fun though.

There's a lot of cool stuff about your car but I really like how you got the coil packs off of the valve covers. That's my biggest dislike about the LS engines... I can't stand not being able to see the valve covers. The standard relocation kit helps but yours looks much better.

Yah when we got the block and it had the pretty orange lsx valve covers on it I definitely didnt want them covered up. Its a custom relocation bracket. Only con about it, which isn't too bad, is the header heat shield covers the spark plugs so I have to take the wheel off to get to them easier from the wheel well.

Finally made a grill. Got a piece of metal mesh material from Mike's to make it. Used a pair of snips and a hand seamer to shape it. Instead of using an epoxy I decided to use button head allen bolts and large washers to fasten it on. Turned out really cool.

Might consider your grille material mounting method for an upcoming project. Completely hidden fastening is cool, but sometimes, simpler, quicker, & easier to maintain just makes more sense.

Yes sir, thats exactly what I had in mind when I did it. Definitely happy with how it turned out for as easy as it was.

Hey, awesome build, glad I found it. Two questions for you, what did you use for a rear view mirror (doesn't look like a Camaro mirror), and what are those turn signals you have? They look really slick.

The rear view mirror is a cheap universal one from O'Reilly because the camaro one is ugly haha. And the turn signals are universal short led bars from Pep Boys.

Had our first day of the TX CAM Challenge today. The course is stupid big and fast and favors the horsepower cars for sure. I was able to secure my invite to Scottsdale today so im pretty relieved about getting that out of the way. The competition has been intense.

Bump.

Did you get the improved racing cooler installed? Did it help out with bringing down the oil temp?

I didn't have a temp gauge before installing it but I figured it was probably something that needed to be done anyways

Been a really long time since I've posted on here or even been on the site. So here's an update on the appearance of the car. I actually made a few cosmetic changes this week that I'll post next weekend at Goodguys.

Hi Derek!
Gonna change the color scheme this season?

We talked about changing the colors and wrap scheme numerous times but didn't quite pull the trigger on it. My sponsors decided they wanted to keep it the same for now so I decided to add a few more decals and change the wheel color. Made a huge difference and looks badass. I'll post pics this weekend at the event.
