I'm sure all of you remember the 1964 GTO that Hotrod Chassis & Cycle built a few years ago for Raybestos as a giveaway car...

Well this year we have the honor of Schwartz-ifying a 1971 Camaro to be raffled off this year!

Introducing, the Raybestos/Schwartz 1971 Camaro "RS"

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/12063900196_3bfd2458bd-1.jpg

As far as the specs, there are still some details being worked out as of today.. But we're working hard on the car to get it ready for summer events!

FOR MORE INFORMATION GO TO: http://www.schwartzperformance.com/1971-camaro-rs-raybestos/

What we started with was an Arizona car, dented up more than we had hoped... The floors were fine, but every other panel needs replacement because it was hit on the passenger side pretty hard. Can you tell? ;)

I found the same thing on my XJ Jeep.

I was out on a trail and a chunk of bondo just fell off the rear quarter. not a fun discovery

After the media blast, we discovered that the right side of the car had been smashed--- worse than we hoped. :(

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/11292905735_7a0796306c-1.jpg

We knew the quarters needed replacement before blasting, which is why they weren't blasted 100%. However.. we didn't expect the roof to need a lot of work. We decided to replace the outer skin (The pictures don't show just how bad the roof was!) :

Ready for minitubs!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/11571667344_e311412592-1.jpg

We mounted the chassis to the car to help prevent the car from twisting during the minitub process. (Pics of chassis later!!!)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/11831031906_8479fdbfa3-1.jpg

The original rear frame rails needed to be cut into a little toward the rear of the car to allow plenty of clearance for the soon-to-come Forgeline Wheels and 335/30/18 BFG Rival tires.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/11830222825_6d413a634a-1.jpg

We cut the DSE Deep Tubs and added roughly an inch to their original width, as they didn't quite fit with 335/30/18's.

It's mainly because of the split bumper look, and yes Raybestos Schwartz was influential ;)

Jeff, that's sinful what the old body shops used to do! I wish I could have found you a nice rust free AZ car. They are here, you just have to be lucky sometimes. I found my 70 SS behind a house about 5-6 years ago and am just starting on it.

Yeah we all didn't really care for the endura nose piece on the RS and wanted it to look a little more plain and clean in that respect. The other Rally Sport touch is the paint job. Anyone remember this scheme from the mid 70's Camaro RS?

We actually got this car from AZ believe it or not! There was no rust on the floor or roof, just a bit on the quarter panels and trunk pan. We didn't think it had been crunched so bad though...!

Nope this build is more for the DIY, instead of $20,000 brakes or whatever they were ;)

We're using Raybestos Corvette rotors (C6 front rotors, used at all 4 corners) and heavy duty 2-piston aluminum calipers at all 4. Raybestos has a new line of rotors ("R300") & pads ("Element3") they're pushing.

Moser hooked us up with their 9 inch housing, with 35 spline axles, and their nodular case with a Wavetrac differential. It should hold up to the beating!!

NASCAR doesnt use carbon/carbon or carbon/ceramic brakes

i think they only use a 13" rotor too with 6 piston monoblock calipers depending on track (interesting note: the teams use the same or very similar brake setups for their short track and road course cars). nothin too special. :)

looks quite robust either way Schwartz. interesting shock mount setup too =)

Aeromotive is on board with this project too. Not sure if you knew this but Aeromotive uses Tanks Inc. tanks for their EFI tank systems. So they can supply a pump instead of the Walbro, that will fit into this tank. We used a Stealth 340 here.

I am aware that Tank's developed the gas tank and that Aeromotive is on board.
If I order a complete Aeromotive tank with 340 pump and billet hanger the price doubles comparing to Tank's gas tank with Walbro pump.
Is it possible to order the 340 pump/billet hanger with Tank's too?
Thank you.

It's to be used as a parking brake but not as an emergency brake. As long as your brakes aren't leaking you're fine :)
Jeff (Schwartz) used one the Ultima he built, it worked great. To deactivate, you just push the pedal down.

This is crazy. I revisited this thread after I saw the sweepstakes thread. You even replied that you bought it from AZ, but it didn't even click. I had looked at this car in August of last year when he had it for a way too high $6k. It was between this car, or the Mustang in my signature. The condition of the body, as you are now aware of, is why we declined to build the car. Looks like it's better than you guys ended up with it!

The reason we only painted the underside was so we could get the chassis mounted & panels fit, so The Paint Spot didn't have to do much or mask the chassis off. This made the paint & assembly job move along a little quicker & more efficiently.
