VIN number

A friend of a friend of mine wants to sell me his 69 "SS" Camaro. Says it’s an original hugger orange car which, he claims, proves it was an SS. He doesn’t have any of the documentation to go along with the car. I got the VIN number off the dash, how can I check if it is a real SS car, or just a clone?

The vin is not going to tell you much except if it was a 6 cyl. or 8cyl.
You need the trim tag numbers and to see if the tag itself has been tampered with (ie. removed, replaced.etc). That will help in identifying the car.

He's full a s__t. Hugger Orange came on anything. Based on that, I wouldn't believe anything he says, unless he is that damn guleable. Get the trim tag number, it should be code 72 / 72 if it is no viynl top. Or 72 B for black viynl top. It needs to be X55 to for sure be a SS350, or X11 and MAYBE be a SS350. But those trim tag codes only count on Norwood (NOR) built cars after 560000 sequential number. Los Angles cars (LOS) do not have these codes.

It will need to have disc brakes and a 12 bolt to be a SS also, amoung other things.

my car had the 12 bolt the muffler hanger ...dual fuel lines ...the brake line fitting on the subframe on the driver side .....because it was an LOS car i couldnt verify ...but on camaros.net i was told by various people that was a real rs ss because of the owners that had the car before i bought it as a shell only so it had no motor no tranny ...but later on a guy from camaros.net found my transmission on ebay...with my partial vin number stamped on it ....which it was weird since this car was stolen and stripped...so i have no idea if that transmission was stolen at the time or it was sold and a different transmission was stolen from this car lol....but anyways you can smell a real ss lol j/k ...just look for those few things

i think its quite obivous its not a true SS...but a very good clone...

hes asking 35k cdn (about 29k usd)...the car is a 8/10 in my opinion, has 454, 12 bolt, flawless paint, super straight, almost everything is new, just needs some minor stuff...

any comments on the cars value?

Even if it was a SS, the fact it is a 454, a wrong motor car would be $20K at best. Probably more like $17k

I have a friend with a 1969 number matching 396, automatic, A/C, RS / SS, Lemans blue with white interior, (only SS's came in Lemans Blue with white interior), LOL! He will take low $30s for it.

BTW, That was my attempt at being funny on the Lemans Blue thing. Copos also came in Lemans Blue with white interiors.

Looking at local prices here in Vancouver, BC...I think 30-35k cdn (25-30k usd) is a reasonable price for it...

Everything else I've seen isn’t nearly as nice and are asking between 15-25k cdn...I originally wanted Shay Campbell's red 69 but it got sold before I had a chance to buy it...
