Hey guys i'm on the way to go see a 1974 Javelin. It has a 727 trans but the owner says the transmission pump is out.
1) how can he tell the trans pump is out? Any tell tale signs its that and not something else?
2) With the pump being out could it have caused damage to other components of the transmission? Or is the pump a relatively straightforward and easy fix? Any info will be appreciated, thank you.

I would recommend checking the fluid level before you start the vehicle, then start it and place the gear lever in neutral. Then check the fluid again. If the level goes down the pump is functioning, if the level does not go down then the pump is broke. Often times the ears break off from the pump gear. If the vehicle doesn't move and the fluid level doesn't go down then it is the pump. If the fluid level does go down, there can still be wear on the pump creating low line pressure which could result in damage to the clutches and bands. If the ears broke off the pump gear, more than likely you will not find any other internal damage. However I would recommend if you are pulling the transmission to change the pump to go through and freshen the transmission. The 727 is a good transmission and is inexpensive to freshen.
I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks for your help mark, the car turned out to be a little more project than complete. Not exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the help though!
