Hello, new member here. Always been reading this forum and now ready to post our build ( my 7 yr old ) who knows quite of bit about cars lol.
Bought the Nova back in 2011 for $3500 from a son who was selling his fathers vehicles when he passed. Sold my Chevelle that I built a while ago, cause drag racing in southern CA got to be too much. Here are a few pics of the all original, (still had the spare tire and manual) Nova before the tear down. Will post more and details of plan when I get a chance, doing this while at work :) enjoy

Very Cool!! What's that thing under the dash?? Looks like a loud speaker, maybe a 1971 answer to a modern day big amp? ;) Lol.
Looks like a great project, as a huge Nova fan I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Looks like a great car to start with. What upgrades are you planning?

Update: Hehe it was a speaker connected to original stereo. Ok my plans for this build is to be a everyday car that can handle just as good as a new sports car and run a drivetrain of this time. Here are my goals for the Nova-
-Clean up subframe & re-weld all welds & seams
-Ridetech front suspension
-Speedtech Torque Arm rear suspension with Ridetech coilover shocks.
-Ly6 / Mast Cam swap, full length headers and full exhaust
-4L80E tranny
-Ford 9in rear end
-Body mods include, firewall filler plate and fill holes, home made sub frame connectors, DSE mini tubes, fill in side lights, move gas filler between tai lights,
-aftermarket fuel tank
-Power windows
-Wheels are yet to be determined after mini tub, but am looking at 18x11 or 12 for rear and 18x9.5 up front, tires 265 or 275 up front & 315 or 335 for rears
-body work and paint will Not be done by me lol. Will be looking for a shop.
I'm sure I'm forgetting somethings, but here are some photos of the progress.

Sounds Awesome! Those wheel caps are what came on my granny fresh 73 Nova when I bought it, I loved those things, lol! Looks like you're well under way. :)
Thanks, we're excited you've chosen the Torque Arm suspension. It's a great way to go and eliminates the inherent issues with 3 or 4 link suspensions, keeps the rear solidly planted and is easy to install. Just curious, what made you decide to not use our matched front suspension? Are you going with Air Ride? Novas with the frame on the ground look wicked. If not, our Chicane coilover conversion kit would work great with a stock subframe and our super tough race quality and track proven control arms have stainless cross shafts, greasable Delrin bushings, and have extra caster built into them.
Are you going to keep it Yellow?? Hmmm, would look cool with some gunmetal centers and brushed lips for wheels and satin sheen gunmetal gray trim and bumpers, a cool graphic on the hood, ...
Our Custom Hot Rod Shop (http://www.speedtechperformance.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=results/category_id=2/home_id=2/mode=cat/cat2.htm) can tackle that paint and body work when you're to that point, give us a call and we can set you up with an estimate. Let us know if there's anything else we can help you with. Keep the progress and photos coming! Looking forward to more. :twothumbs

Thanks Ben, and I have been in contact with your shop when I was trying to figure things out before I started. I sold all that OLD stuff that was on the car that I knew I wasn't going to use. I going with Ridetech cause of the whole package and simplicity of it. I know it doesn't make sense to me either lol, but wasn't sold on their rear suspension. No AirRide, coilovers. My son wants the yellow, says it Bumble Bee lol. Not doing yellow, not sure on color yet. I would love to have you give me an estimate, but I'm in Orange County, CA. Again thanks, and I will be in contact soon as the mini tubs are done, wheels fitted for measuring for rear end.

Ok, I've had a bunch of parts including the subframe off to get sandblasted.

Picked up subframe from being sandblasted and getting ready to clean er up, weld and threw a quick coat of primer to use later for mocking up the drivetrain, suspension. Boy the welds on this frame are UGLY!!!!!! Don't know how these car held together all these years. Lets get to work.

Lol! I bet kids think any yellow car now is "bumble bee". Amazing how a simple movie can affect the course of history. If you need help with ideas we offer rendering and design services too. Hmmm, that yellow's kinda catchy, though ;).

Sorry Bergers59 keeping that stuff cause they are in great shape.
I TIG the whole frame and was jumping around while welding with low amps. I took some measurements before I started and after it didn't move any. I was running no longer than 6in beads.

Thanks Jon, my mom was the original owner of the Chevelle and then I got it and turned into a beast lol. Yes I was fortunate with this Nova. Original owner kept car in the garage most of the time. To my surprise no big rust spots :), I think someone left a damp towel on the trunk lid and it has small spots of rust in a circular pattern. Still has original paint and small amount of bondo on drivers door. Probably change out the skin tho. I'm in the area by Knotts Berry Farm, it would be a pleasure to meet you sometime.

Just want to give you guys or gals a heads up, I started this project last summer. I wasn't planning on putting it on a forum, but thought what the hell. Why not another Nova, but its mine :)
So, subframe done and put away for later. Now time for the body mods. First up is the firewall filler plate from DSE, nice piece and easy to install.

Now that the welding and grinding is done time for some quick primer. Next on the list is making some subframe connectors and that's where I'm at at this point. I have a an idea in mind and thanks to all the people who posts I have read in this forum. I'll post photos and soon as I complete this stage.

No I didn't cut any of the firewall behind the filler plate, but did sooth some the AC hole, primered the back, tack them together from inside of firewall. I've been all over the web lol, been planning in my head since I bought it. Side marker delete is on my list, fuel between the taillights, but keeping the badges and door handles. Kinda like the old school look. No worries Craigs73.

Well I finally got back to finishing up the welding on the subframe connectors that I made. Cleaned everything up and put some primer on
top and underside. Things are going to get a little bit slow, my son started his baseball season yesterday :) He came out to help clean up the Nova before we primered.

The next stage of this build is going to be the DSE mini wheel tubs, so i can determine wheel & tire size, differential width. Then I can start making some suspension purchases. Will keep posting as I get started on wheel tubs. Until then, don't they look pretty LOL :)

: update. Got some good and bad news from work, we start working 6-10's now till sometime in March. Money will be good, but everything else gets put on the back burner. I will try and squeeze some time in on the DSE mini tubs to get them done and post up the progress, but it will be slow. Want to say thanks to Cwylie on here for the parts I picked up from him and thanks to all who stopped by to take a look at my build. I will still be on the forum looking as always and getting ideas and pumped up to finish this bad boy. Till then.

I worked on the mini tubes for a couple of hours Friday evening after work. Made the final cut and cut out the section of the frame. Still need to clean up the existing tub flange, not sure to cut out the spot welds or leave the cut section flange by smoothing out the edges. Will see what I decide to do. Next will be fitting in the mini tubs and see how the fit will be. I think i might have to trim some more, but will see when I get them up in there. Here are some photos of the progress.

Ok, have a little bit of an update on the progress of my mini tubes stage. Have the been working on it with what very little time I have. Have the passenger side 95% done, trunk lid bracket and back seat firewall piece still need to be done to call a done deal. Works been getting busy and not sure when I'll get to the drivers side. I'm looking for a or pair of 335/30/18 tires, used preferred, bald, cuts in them whatever for mock up. If anyone knows someone who knows someone please send them my way. Thanks. Here are some pics of my progress.

I no longer need the 335/30RZ18, found a Perrelli Zero something in San Diego and will be delivered on Monday :) Can't wait to get this fat tire under there and see
if all clears. Then I can finish the drivers side, check that side and time to order the wheels & tires. Slow progress but enjoying every minute it. Thanks everyone.

This is not much of of an update, but wanted to show you guys what the tire looks like under car. Also have some questions for all who are running this size tire & wheel combo. Going to post this over at the tires & wheels section too. Ok the tire is a 335/30RZ18 Pirelli Rosso, it measures side wall to side wall 14-1/8" without the wheel mounted. Stuck it under the car and have a little under a 1/4" on each side of the side walls. My question is when the wheel is mounted to the tire does it suck in the side walls a little bit? Does anyone have a true side wall measurement with 335/30RZ18 from BFG KDW2 or BFG Rivals & 18x12 wheel mounted together? This measurement would help with my decision to stay with this tire or go down to a 315/30RZ18. Any info would be great. Thanks.
Update: sorry I accidentally deleted these pics, but the tire in question wasn't was I was going with. I have some pics in my other posts that I've updated showing what I will be going with.

Wow, that sucker looks super fat! Yes wheel width will affect sidewall "section" width. We have dealt with different mfgs for tires and the same tire, say a 315, is an actual different width between each one. We've used Michelin, Nitto, and Falkens lately. Personally I've just gone to the mfgs website and looked up tire size dimensions to make the best guess. Tirerack.com is also a pretty good resource for this. Make sure you're comparing apples to apples, i.e. look at the measuring rim, such as a 315 on an 11" rim. Also remember their [315] width is measuring sidewall to sidewall, not tread width. Hope this helps a bit.

Jay has BFG G Force T/A KDWs (flame style tread) on his 73 Camaro, 18x12 Forgelines with 335/30/18s and they measure right at 13" sidewall to sidewall using our tire machine's calipers. They look really wide. Here's a link to a couple photos... Speedtech Performance Photo Gallery; Jay's 73 Camaro (http://www.speedtechperformance.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=292/category_id=7/home_id=-1/mode=prod/prd292.htm)
On the other hand Blake's 315-30-18 Falken Azenis' on 18x11.5 Forgeline wheels measure right at 12" wide sidewall to sidewall with the same calipers and clearly don't look as wide. Technically a 315 should only be 2 centimeters thinner than a 335, but wheel size and tire mfgs inability to read a ruler the same make for different real world overall widths.

Ok, I've gotten a few responses from members with measurements regarding the various 335/30/18 sizes out there. Have to say thanks to all that responded because I've decide to stay with the 335's after all and when work slows down going to finish up mini tubes and start ordering my wheels and tires. Want to share with everyone what I found out so they don't go through what I've been going through wondering if or not are they going to fit. Have four brands so you guys make your decision in what to run.
1) BFG TA KDW 335/30/18 with
18x12 wheel mounted side wall
to side wall comes in at = 13 1/8
+-
2) BFG RIVALS 335/30/18
w/18x12 wheel side wall to
side wall comes in at = 13 1/8 +-
* these two above now are on back order and hard to come by now a days :( which bites
3) Michelin Pilot Sport
335/30/18 without
wheel side wall to side wall comes
in at = 13 1/8 +-
* this tire is available but is on the pricey side and have many sizes available like 265mm, 275mm for the fronts.
4) Pirelli P Zero Rosso
335/30/18 without wheel side
side wall to side wall comes in
at = 14 1/8 +-
* really WIDE tire for those who can fit it :)
Anyways hope this helps others cause it really helped me out. Until then.

I had a 335/30/18 KDW on my car and they were 13 1/8" on a 12" wheel. Then I mounted a 335/30/18 Rival on the 12" and its 13 1/2" so I now have 315 on a 12" and it 13 1/8"

That's what I'm talking about, how you go from one tire to the other and it can mean you going to a smaller tire. One of the members that chimed in was using the BFG Rival on a 12'' rim that measured 13 1/8'', hmm guess rims play a role in this too. Thanks for sharing Bad94, would like to see some pics of your ride.

Let me tell you rchaskin, this is not bodywork lol this is metal fabrication and I can handle that. Now working with wood, I'm lost. The real bodywork I will leave to the guys that do it so well, they make it look so easy.

I know I've been out of the scene with this project, but work finally slowed down. I was able to finish the wheel tubs and I must say after all the work involved my triceps, biceps and wrists had enough working that grinder in that small space lol. Also have the Ridetech fuel fill cap on its way so I can fabricate that in place and going to start on deleting the side marker lights. Sometime next week going to talk to a guy about some wheels and have to say making a decision on wheels suck. Oh I've included a teaser pic of some mock up tires. Happy Easter

Thanks you for the compliments.
I understand what you mean Tom091074, I don't think anyone can avoid those life's moments when you have to put things on hold. Have patience, don't lose that drive and you'll have yourself a nice ride.
Hey Ben, yea the tires look awesome under there. After cleaning out my garage of all that metal, dust and trash I decided to throw the tires underneath :) Tires are 325/30/19 and fit really good. I hope that when I speak to the wheel guy that I settle on a wheel. Will see.

So you are running the 325/30/19 now? What's the width of those off rim? I'm going in the morning to get a set of 335/30/18's and I'd like to run the 345/30/19 if possible, just curious as to what the difference is between the ones you have listed and the ones in the pictures?

Yes I'm going with the 325/30/19 cause the guy I'm going to be dealing with about the wheels only make 19" wheels and above. I bought some old tires that you see in the photo from a guy who took them off his Z06 corvette, they are Goodyears and they measure 13-1/2" side wall to side wall and no wheel. They fit with about 1/2" clearance on each side, I'll be running a 19x11.5 wheel with Michelin PSS tires. Not sure about the 345/30/19. The difference is the diameter of wheel I'm going with, that's all. Hope this helps.

I just bought a set of 335/30/18s like new cheap so I'll make them fit and run 18s. I'll measure them when I get home.

Hey Tom, glad you got a good deal on them. what brand are those tires you bought? Let us know what those measurements are.

They are pilot sport ps2's and I'm getting 14 1/8 not mounted sidewall to sidewall.

That's a fat tire you got there Tom. One of the first used tires I bought for mock up was a Pirelli
Rosso 335/30/18 and it also measured 14 1/8" with out wheel. Didn't have 1/4" clearance even with the extra metal I cut out for the mini tubs. Let us know how they turn out for you.

Kiquee- Although these wheels may not be close to what you're after, but I thought I'd share some pics of a Nova we just wrapped up in the shop. Maybe some motivation for you but also a great illustration of what stance, wheels, and tires can do for a car. Can't wait to see what you're getting!
This car came to us like this with mostly stock suspension and 17" TTs.

Thanks Ben for those pics, I've been following that build :). Anyways ordered my EFI tank, fuel pump, and other stuff that goes with it so I can finish the fuel cap fab work. Also finished up talking with the guy about my wheels ;) it's a done deal. Gave them a pattern I wanted and they are going to build it for me. They are Rugotti Forged Wheels 19x11.5 rears, 19x9 fronts wrapped with Michelin PSS 325/30ZR-19 - 265/35ZR-19 tires. Satin Black Centers, polished dish & lip, hidden valve stem. Will be made to fit ZO6 front & rear brakes & calipers. It will be about a couple of weeks till they are done. Can't wait lol. Will post more and pics when I get some to put up.

Also they finished up the centers of the wheels and on their way to get drilled and powder coated. Looks like sometime next week they should be done. Have to say after seeing the centers I can't wait that long. LOL. EFI tank will be here tomorrow, things have busy so haven't had time to work on the Nova. Will keep updating as soon I can.

Ok update on the wheels. They are done and I received a photo from them of one of the wheels. They look sweet. So I went down to pick them up today, the back spacing on the fronts were not right so I left them to have them corrected. I have the rears with tires mounted, but I won't be able to post any pics till later tonight. So here is the photo of the wheel. What do you guys think?

Ok finally got them home and took some snap shots. Like I mentioned before the fronts are being redone, with the rears I can start taking measurements for the new rear end, Z06 brakes & suspension. That will be the next phase, I'm waiting on some parts to finish the fill fuel cap plumbing to the gas tank and then fill in the side marker lights with some sheet metal. Ok here are those photos of the rear wheels.

A little update for now. Like I mentioned in my previous post my focus has been cleaning up the engine, prep, paint has been finished. Ordered my SS3 cam kit, tune, intake porting and converter from GPI ( Gwatney Performance Innovation) and I have to say Ryan has been great to deal with even with all my questions I throw at him. Also waiting for gaskets to come in so I can put it all in and have the motor ready for mock up in the frame. I have a valve spring remover tool that I used on my 2002 Tahoe, but it doesn't fit on my L92 heads. So I made some new bottom bases, one 1/4 & 3/8 thick just in case one didn't work. In the photo on the right is the old version and the ones on the left are the new ones I made.

A little update for now. Received some of my Speedtech torque arm suspension yesterday, very nice. The rest of the rear and front suspension
is on its way. Also waiting for headers, motor mount plates, third member to get here. Got underneath the car today to install the frame braces and rear crossmember for the torque arm, my 9" rear differential is also on order.
It's coming along real nice, soon will have it rolling on its wheels :)

Been awhile since I've updated on the Nova, work has been busy. Well I've got the new cam, springs, pushrods, cam phaser kit, oil pan, timing cover all put together :) It's ready for mocking it up in the frame so I can see where to notch the frame, fit headers and the front suspension. I have almost everything for the suspension except for the 9" rear end, steering box and rear coil overs.
I'll put up some more when work slows down hehehe.

Hey everyone, just a little bit of an update here on the Nova. Got started
on the frame notching on my subframe for the Hooker motor mounts kit, cause I'm using the 302-1 oil pan that has the ability to be stroked out for more cubic inches :). The headers fit great, they don't even hang below the subframe rails after I set the 3 deg down as per instructions. Went to put on the Lee's power steering box and it wasn't the right box :( Have picked up the Currie rear end and now need to have the axles bearings pressed on so I can start on the rear suspension. Things should start coming together here now since I have everything now to make it a roller vehicle. More to come later.

Got around to doing some more on the car today. I put the subframe on using Speedtechs aluminum solid mounts, it lined up great. Had the 3rd member painted and installed in the housing along with the torque arm pinion support. Started mounting the lower & upper control arms and had a issue with one of the upper arm shaft threads which got stripped when installing the lock nut ugh :(. Took care of that and called it a day. Getting bearings pressed on the axles at the end of the week so I can get going on the rear. Going to have to send the steering box to Lee's to get the right box that bolts up. Never ending issues lol

Ok got some more things done today. The deal with steering box was my mistake. Didn't give it enough time trying to install it, due to a 7 year old telling me how bored he is lol. Steering box fits like a glove :). Had the bearings pressed on the axles, took tranny in to have my guy go thru it. He called back says all look ok, but need some new clutches. Started on the rear suspension, got it hung in there and lined it up. As usual things don't bolt up like they are supposed to, so a little grinding, welding and drilling got it to fit. That's as far as I got today. Tomorrow my plan is get coil overs set up, put on the axles and rear brakes. Well that's the plan hehehe more pics to come later.

Looks killer! Great stance and wide meats make all the difference.
On the spacers, I'd avoid the cheapie universal mr gasket ones from the autoparts store. From my experience they're difficult to center and throw off your wheel balance. I also had one crack and fall apart as I unbolted the wheel. There are two companies that I found here on the forum that make custom billet spacers, they're built to your width and are both hub and wheel centric so they are custom built specifically to your car. I got some at 10mm thick and paid $110 for a pair. In my opinion they were worth it. For a nicer not so custom to your vehicle and a little less expensive set, we get our universal billet spacers from Baer brakes. Give us a ring if we can help you with those.
The car is really getting there, on it's own 4 feet now. Keep it rockin'!

Little update on the progress on the Nova. Have the front suspension altogether now with the wheels on. Finally it's on all wheels and I can move it around a little easier. Boy do I need to add some shims on the upper control arms, tires have a lot of positive camber. I'll take a look at later after I install the motor and trans, so it has some weight to the front. I'll try to get it close later down the road and let the alignment shops handle the final specs. Then the next project is to make a trans mount and set the engine to the correct deg down. So far so good. Here are some photos.

Ok, have the motor and trans in the Nova. I'm using Hooker LS conversion kits, motor mounts, headers and minus the trans mount. They currently don't have a trans mount for the 4L80E. So next on the list is custom trans mount, shorten trans dipstick tube from Madman. I also was checking steering and suspension travel and found out that the RideTech Tru-turn tie-rod end hits one of the headers tubes on the passenger side and come close on one on the drivers side. So I have to modify these headers to work with the True-turn. Trans tunnels needed to be opened up to fit this monster trans :), might be in my best interest to also raise the trans driveshaft tunnel a bit too. So I have some modifying to do in the weeks to come and then I can move on to the fabrication of the exhaust. More to come later.

Little progress made on the Nova this past couple of weeks. Finished fabricating a trans crossmember which came out ok, it will do the job for sure. It will give much added clearance to help when fabricating the exhaust around the torque arm suspension. Also tweaked the trans dipstick I picked up from Madman, was too long for my taste. So, far the past week or so I've been working on installing the shorten drive shaft. Have my angles set and tunnel cut for driveshaft. Started with attaching together the trans tunnel brace with a little help from my son. He has pick up the mig welding really quick so he wanted to weld it up for me lol. It's wasn't bad at all too. Made up some templates for the trans tunnel and driveshaft tunnel. Next is transfer to 18 gauge sheet metal and form to fit. Tack everything and then final weld. Will post finished results soon. Will be off to the Long Beach Auto Swap-meet this Sunday to find some deals on items I'm looking for. More to come.

Thanks. The paint I used is just rattle can primer, I will have it powder coated when all the modifications are done and ready for paint.
Been busy at work and holiday stuff haven't had much time to work on the Nova. Have half the tunnel done, still more work involved. Been picking up parts too for my exhaust. Hope to have more of an update for you guys soon. Happy Holidays.

Well things have been busy for me at work since the holidays and have had very little time to work on the Nova. Tho I did manage to squeeze some time here and there to finish the trans & drive shaft tunnel. Also gathered up my material for my S.S. exhaust, also had to modify the x-pipe some for it to work in my setup. Not to long ago I received my reworked harness from BP Automotive and I must say very quality work from Bill. Hopefully when work slows down I'll have some photos of the exhaust mocked up under the car.

Amazing build and progress! I have a 72 nova that I'm building we seem to have similar ideas, I have the ridetech front coil-overs and 4link set up, DSE mini tubs, but am thinking ls3 and 6 speed manual. I was wondering if you were going to put an after market AC in the car and if you knew how it would work with your blanked off firewall? Just started some more body mods and was thinking of doing it but want to have AC and wasn't sure if they would work together...

Thanks guys. king869 I do plan on running an aftermarket AC cause the car came with AC so that's the plan. I've seen aftermarket AC work with the smoothed out firewall, thanks to the other builds I've seen here on this forum. I'm not quite at that part of my build so I don't have much to say about it now.
Onequickcoupe thank you, I owe a lot of the work I've done to my Nova to all the projects on here that I have been following :) glad to be of some help to you on your build. Any question feel free to ask away.

Quick question. Is that fuel door the universal from ride tech?
No, it was the one for the Camaro from Ridetech. Had to modify & re-weld it so it will line up and go through below the trunk latch.

Like I mentioned from my previous posts that I was going to start on the exhaust. I'm running the RideTech front suspension with the TruTurn steering linkage and the passenger side tie-rod hits one of the header tubes. So this is where I began. I started by cutting out what was in the way and modified the tubes to clear. The driver side has one tube that comes really close, not to my liking so I'll be performing the same thing on the drivers side header. Until then I'll post up some more progress.

Ok got a little more work done today with the drivers side header. I've asked myself this question I come up with nothing, why build headers and then put a dent in one of the tubes so it clears another? Why not just take the extra time and route it so you don't have to put dents into the tubes jeez. Anyways I routed that tube away from the # 1 tube and made a little more clearance away from the tie-rod. Attached the SS Flex coupling and set it back into the car. Position the x-pipe in place and started to route the 3" SS exhaust pipes. I'm giving myself about 1/4" of clearance around the exhaust pipes for moment or expansion. More to come later.

Hello everyone, not much of an update. Had to move some things around in the garage and the Nova had to go outside for a sec. Thought I'd take some pics of it cause it will go back in lol. Work has been busy so the Nova has to take a break from progress. Will get back to it soon as we slow down. Will update as soon as I can.

Up next is get driveshaft shorten, new u-joints and high speed balance. I've started making a list of things I'll need for the SS exhaust and will be picking them up soon. Been about nine months since I've posted any progress on my Nova, but the plan is still in full progress in my head :). Work has slowed down so I continued on the exhaust up till the rear diff. My vacation is coming up soon, so my plan is to finish over the diff to the bumper. Kinda tight underneath their, but not impossible. Merry Xmas peeps and a Happy New Years :)

Fantastic work! The tail pipes get a little tight but it's doable, we have done several in the shop with 3" pipe. Pictured here is a 68 Nova also with our torque arm, hopefully this will give you some inspiration. The angle of the photo makes the left tailpipe look closer to the panhard than it actually is, there is actually plenty of room in there.

Thanks Ben for the info and photos. Yes it's tight but it can be done with some patience lol. My plan was to cut the corners of the trunk so it will give me more room to run exhaust above the gas tank and out by the rear tire then out to the back. I can box the corners in after I've run the exhaust through there. I will look into how you guys ran it in the photos if I run into issues with my plan.

Well didn't finish what I had planned for this break, but did make some progress. Finished up the passenger side exhaust over the rear end and to the back just before the rear bumper. I'm pleased on how it came out, hanger installed and plenty of room for movement under there. It's a slow process, but I'm seeing the finishing product down the road.

FINALLY!!!!! I'm quite relieved that I'm done with the exhaust, well.... as far as its all tacked up and in its final place. Have a another header tube that's needs repositioning other than that final welding will be done when car is stripped down ready for body & paint. Some patching needs to addressed now in the trunk area :) Moving on to the front of the Nova I'm planning on fitting front sheetmetal, inner fender wells and adjust front ride height roughly to see if any modifications need to be addressed to fenders / inner fender wells. Until next time with more progress & photos.

Made a little progress this last couple of weeks. Fitted up front fenders, radiator core support, adjusted ride height some more to find out that drivers side fender rubs on the lip. Now the passenger side same height doesn't rub, hmmm. I looked into the drivers side a little closer and notice it has been repaired and not a very good job at that. So needing to replace fender with a new one and check again so I can move on to inner fenders fitment. More on that later, the patches in trunk from the exhaust cut outs I made are covered now. Slow progress but things are getting done :)

Hey Windows. The brakes are not from PBR, they are Chevy's Z06 Big Brake Kit that I purchased from Tobin at Kore3. I'm using the pad lets that came with the kit, maybe someday down the road I will try the single pads.

While I'm waiting for my new front driver side fender, I've decided to start on some other tasks. I started with the front engine accessories which I had purchased a ( VintageAir LS Front Runner ) system from a forum member here. I must say I like this system cause of it being very compact. Will have about 6 1/2 in. of room in front of it for radiator/ electric fans, so I'll be looking around for something that will work. Also ordered some Sparco sliding seat tracks so I can start fabricating for the GTO's seats to be mounted. This will keep me busy for now lol.

Still waiting for my front fender and was told that ETA would be around the end of July. So I went onto the seats and began with making some brackets for the Sparco sliders to be mounted to the bottom of the seats. I had purchased some stock bucket seat brackets that were for an original bucket seat car. Had to modify them to work with my raised tunnel and then weld them down to the floor. Mounted the seats and must say I like the look  very comfortable too. lol Next will be figuring out how to make the back seats work. Be back soon ✌

Nice! They look right at home! In the shop here we have had real good success with PRC fan and shroud combinations. If you're after something used, in browsing the web I've heard people say that Ford Taurus dual fans work great, not sure how that would fit the Nova.

Thanks Centerforce, making as much progress as I can. By removing the electric tracks from the seats I was able to mount the seats as low as I could. The only thing electrical that I kept is the part that adjusts the reclining of the seats. With a helmet on I still lots of room to the headliner, though it helps that I'm not a very tall man lol

Today I finished up fitting the bottom portion of the back seats. They had to be placed a little towards the center cause of the mini tubs, but other wise look ok. Looks like I'll need to remove the back seat bracing, firewall etc to move it back about several inches to accommodate the top portion of the back seat. Will see how things go.

Hey Sherp69, yes I've have seen your build :) A lot of what I've done did come from your project and others that I've seen here too. The top back seats are defiantly the challenge here lol. I've been tossing the idea around about getting rid of the back padding behind the headrest to make it look like the front seats and do some forming of the foam around the headrest. Will see how it goes lol. Hope you get some fire under you to finish up your project.

Finished up fitting the top portion of the GTO back seats in the car this weekend. I started by removing the back padding behind the headrest, formed it a bit, cut some of the frame of seat and welded a pad to the floor with a nut to where both seats will bolt up. Will need to have both top back seats and the front seats sent to have some upholstery upgrades done to them. Next will finish the firewall behind the seats to complete this task, was tired of climbing in & out of this car lol.

Was it worth it to start with stock bucket seat brackets and modify them for the front seats? I need to get my seats mounted soon and I have the same enlarged tunnel problem.

Oregon, I had bought the GTO seats way before I thought about brackets and stuff. Anyways my tunnel wasn't really the problem, it was the cars floor which was the problem. When I purchased the stock brackets for the buckets seats I thought it was going to be a breeze. The brackets once tacked to the floor was uneven compared to the bottom of the GTO's seats, so I had to improvise to level it all out. I was wondering if the bottom of the stock buckets seats brackets were uneven to go with those brackets I purchased. My car came with a bench seat, so I can't compare. Good luck with your project.

Well it has been a while since I've done any work to the Nova, but have been getting parts tho. Anyways had some time off today from work so I decided to make the divider between the back seats and trunk. Got it all ready for spot welding in place. Now that's for another day.

Well after a busy day with son's baseball picture day I finally had time to finish up the back seat divider. Finished up all the spot welding and cleaned them up. Installed the back seats again and decided to take five on them for a few second lol. I bought a steering column from a member here and waiting for my steering wheel also purchased from another member. Will post photos once I've received them. Will be fitting up drivers fender tomorrow and see how she fits compared to the original that rubbed when the wheel was full left. Hope it clears so I can move on to the fab work on the inner fender wells. More to come ? stay thirsty my friends lol

A little more progress. Started by cutting out the speaker sheet metal at the dash and filling in with a solid piece. Wanted to get some practice on my tig with sheet metal before I tackle the hood with some vents. So far so good. Still waiting on parts and time so I can continue with other things to do. More to come.

Thanks Centerforce. Yes very thin lol but I managed to keep somewhat straight. I had to use dolly hammer to bang out the little waves. I messed up on deleting my side markers with mig and now the body guys will have to fix that lol. So I tried tig welding this time and my test subject was that speaker sheet metal on the dash. Wanted to get a handle on it before I tackle the vents on a new hood.

Yes those are Frank's vents, but I bought them tacked only. I figured I can weld them or fuse them myself. Wasn't an easy task on the first one. Was having issues, but finally managed to finish it up. I'm excited to see how they turn out or I ruin a perfectly good hood. Still a ways from getting to that point.

Is the frame clearance still good through complete suspension cycle?
Peter, I did raise and lower the car the best I could in the garage to determine clearance. Didn't take out much, definitely better than it was before. Just wanted a little clearance from the frame. The drivers side is going to be tricky cause of steering box, might have to move one of the steering box bolts to top of frame cause the cut will go into the lower bolt in the frame. That's a little ways out till I get that stage. Thanks for the asking cause I don't want to make a mistake that already has been done.

Ok, driver side inner fender done!!!! Scratch that off the list of modifications to do. Onto the next one. More to come later. Maybe by end of year I'll be looking for a shop to do the final steps, body & paint, upholstery, wiring and give it back to me turn key lol. Well that's the plan anyways.

Thanks Centerforce. I'm loving the Dynasty. I did some rework on my side marker lights that I didn't like when I welded it up with my mig. It came out so much better with the Dynasty with little sheet metal warp.

Finished up the welding on the exhaust system and ready to install back into the Nova. Making some progress on my list of things to do, moving on to the next one. The bumpers are next, a little tuck, shave bolts, just looking for a cleaner look. More to come later.

It's close DY69Cam, and that's the clearance at full lock to lock. I'm ok with the clearance now, cause before it was rubbing big time. I'm sure somewhere it will rub but shouldn't be that bad. I don't see much rubbing with daily driving. It will be put on track to see some fun driving and that's where it may rub some. If it's really bad looks like I may look into a different sub frame lol ;) oh damn lol

Ok would like some feedback from you guys. I've been tossing some ideas about how to clean up the front bumper, nothing too crazy. I've come up with a few, 1st is OEM, #1 is a LED daytime running bar modified just below the vents and flush, #2 is round daytime running light in place of the original turn signal and #3 is just like a 69 Camaro. In all drawings their will be small LED mounted in the grill and will not be noticeable until they turn on. Bumpers will also be shaved clean from bolts too. Not my drawing either, got it off the old internet, made it easier to do this lol. Let the comments begin, any will help. Thanks.

#1 no.
#2 is a nice subtle change, looks like it fits the design well, and keeps the design based on the Nova rather than the Camaro.
#3 as said has been done a lot. Still looks good but if you're going to go through the effort to change yours why do something that's already been done a lot?
Here's a Nova we wrapped up recently where we filled the rectangular holes but left the turn signals, sort of a combo of #2 & 3 of your drawings. Filling those holes and adding round driving lights might be kinda cool and different enough from stock without looking too out of place. Food for thought.

Here is what I did......
As you can see I went with aforementioned 69 Camaro lights in the lower valance. While they may be to a point of being over used, in the Maverick/Comet world this is a completely different look and is very unique. But for turn signals/running lights I made a little bracket and mounted it vertically behind the grill. Mostly out of site when but still very bright and effective when lit up.
This photo they show up very clear, but with the hood down and then looking at them standing up you just don't see them.

The lights themselves I got from Rodworx and are actually replacement lights for a 1932 Ford front spreader bar.

I am really digging this build thread. Love what you have done with the sub frame and inner fender modifications. I am undecided if I am going to keep my original sub or not but if I do I am going to try an replicate what you have done in order to fit bigger tires up front, already have mini tubs on order for the back and plan on using a speedtech torque arm. Any decisions on color? The yellow is really growing on me.

It is from Spoilers by Randy. He has a web site and makes them for many muscle car era vehicles. This one is for a 69 Camaro and is called his Pro Touring style.

Ok rear bumper is done. I've never really had a problem with the rear bumper until I put it into place, man I didn't like the way it fit. I mean the ends of the bumpers look like dumbo ears, there is about an inch between the body and bumper lol. Then the part that runs along the tail lights also about an inch between them. So a little nip & tuck had to take place. Never done this before but have seen some photos out their in the old inter web lol. Took 3/4" out of the sides & 3/8" from where it runs along the tail lights. Shaved the bolts so I get that smooth look. A lot of putting in on & off and my arms and back are burnt out lol. Over all I'm satisfied with the end result. Cool.
I'm waiting for my radiator that I ordered from Wizard Cooling and will be getting the radiator core ready for it when it arrives, can't wait.

Thanks for the complements guys. Now that it is done I've kept looking at it the other day and saying to myself that I could've done things differently that could've saved me some headaches lol Being this was my first, I'm thinking that the front will go a little smoother, still haven't decided what direction I'll be going. Drawing #2 has been looking like a candidate. Will see. That will have to wait, have a radiator coming so radiator core support needs some tweaking also. Power steering cooler, a/c condenser need also to be mounted before I get to the front bumper. More to come soon.

Ok a little update. Modifications to the radiator support core is complete and radiator installed from Wizard Cooling. AC condenser, power steering cooler also installed. Want to give a lot of props for those guys, radiator came out exactly how I ordered it. Sometimes I get ahead of myself when working on things, should've waited till the radiator arrive before I did final welding on core lol. Oh well a little more time lol. I'm keeping the VVT on my LS so I needed spacers installed on the accessories which made the clearance issues with the electric fans. It all worked out, again thanks Wizard Cooling. Now I can check this off my list and onto the next.

I was looking at recovery coolant tanks to finish up the coolant system. Wasn't to happy with what's out there and the prices they are asking for them. So I had some aluminum sheet laying around, ordered some parts and came out spending about half from the ones I was looking at. Will be powdered coated along with all the other crap lol. Plenty of room for the air filter and tube to be tucked behind the drivers headlight.

Ok, a little update of the progress slow but getting it done. Been working on the front bumper getting it tucked in all around. I think I've come to a decision on where I'm going with the look of the lights on the bumper, that will come later. I've looked for how to on these bumpers are done, but really got was a lot of before and after photos. Nothing in between on how it was really done so here I'm posting on how I did it and hope it will help someone here too. Here is where I'm at now.

You are correct Oregon, I was able to move it in 1/2" and took some off the bumper edges to line up with the filler. Doesn't sound like much but defiantly looks better than having that big gap.

Thanks Rebob and everyone for the compliments. Yes the little details is what I look for in cars that I'm looking at even tho it may be not so much a big wow factor, but knowing what it took to make that little detail is well worth it. The finish line is getting closer, ready to hand this over to a shop to finish this baby. lol.

I did not have to weld the back side of the light bucket cause I had enough heat on it to penetrate the other side. You are correct about the radius on the front. The bucket was a little long and I stuck it thru the hole while the bumper was fitted on the car. Then I set it in where it needed to be and traced the outside of the bucket. Removed it from the bumper and cut that section off, removed bumper and tacked it place. Very time consuming lol

Just finished up modifying headlight buckets and taillight housings to hold LED lighting and LED blinkers in the grill. Headlights are from Vintage Car LED glass housing and look stock. It's coming together a little bit at a time making sure everything fits or needs to be fitted lol. Working on oil catch can for engine, trans vent & overflow can, diff vent & overflow can and gas tank vent can. Will post when complete. More check marks on this list, goal to get in a shop by end of year.

Alright cold air intake tube is finished lol. MAF sensor, vacuum bungs all welded in. Drilled some holes on the front part of inner fender and cut out some sections in the headlight grill to allow some fresh air to the air filter. Wow getting closer to finishing my check list.
