View Full Version : 1st Gen CTS-V calipers on a 1st gen F body?

Got a 67 Firebird currently fitted with the SSBC single piston 11" disk brakes and their 2" drop spindle. They suck. Looking to do some kind of brake upgrade. I have 1st gen CTS-V calipers available to use if there is something out there to make them work? Not a big deal if the spindle has to be changed (must keep a 2" drop though) and has to fit inside 17" american racing wheels. Doable? There was a thread posted a few years back about doing this but no answers on how to do it.
Also interested in putting the rears on (moser 12 bolt)

You might try Flynbye. Ask him if his 5th gen F-Body brembo to 1st gen F body spindle will work with the 1st gen CTS-V caliper since they have the same bolt pattern.

I think I started the original thread. It was something the guys at ATS were thinking about doing but never got around to. Seems like there ought to be a way to do it...I just don't know what it is.

Did some more research on this... Im not sure if my thinking is correct here so correct me if Im wrong...
Seems like this is a 99% bolt on mod to LS1 camaros using C6Z 14" rotors. So if you were to use the KOR3 LS1/C5 caliper brackets for the correct spindle these CTSV calipers should bolt on and fit with the C6Z rotors, right?
My biggest issue is getting these under 17" wheels. One guy got them inside a set of 17" C4 vette A-mold wheels with a little grinding. I may see if it will work with a C6 Z51 rotor (13.5"??) and make a set of brackets to fit.
Tobin? Ideas on the Z51 rotors with these calipers? I know you mentioned these calipers have a very tall pad (2-3/8"?) Do the Z51 rotors have enough meat to work properly?

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. I am using stock spindles with the LS1 conversion brackets on my '69 Camaro. My calipers are 5th gen Camaro SS Brembos instead of CTS-V calipers, but I believe the only difference is the bolt sizing that attaches the caliper to the bracket.
Instead of using C6Z rotors, I decided to use the Camaro rotors so I wouldn't have the pad overhang issue. I think you also need to space the caliper out from the bracket if you are using the C6Z rotors. The down side to using the Camaro SS rotors is you need to machine the hub centers out to 70.6mm in order to clear the stock hub.
I have yet to actually put the spindles on my car so who knows what could go wrong. But I bench tested all of the suspension components and I was surprised how well everything fit together.
Also, I am running a 17" C5 Z06 wheels with a spacers and there was a VERY small amount of grinding that needed to happen in order for the caliper to miss the wheel with any decent amount of clearance. If you need a 2" drop, I don't see why this setup wouldn't work with the Ridetech Tru-Turn system.

The camaro rotors have a slightly different bolt pattern too.

If you figure it out post up pics. I like the idea of being able to use good consumable parts like rotors and pads that you can pick up locally.

The fronts fit right up to the brackets Kore3 sells for LS1 Brakes.

I believe there is some machining that needs to be done on the caliper in order to get the right offset. On another thread a while back there was PT member designing a backing plate for the ebrake set up. I would like to find one for a Ford 9 inch with the big bearing/Torino. These CTSV Brembo 4 piston calipers are a great deal for the money. I can’t believe it’s taken the industry this long to make a ebrake and bracket set up for them.

do NOT use the ZO6 rotors.
the ZO6 rotors do not match up with the 4piston brembo pad.

As shown above, the long done conversion pairing the C6 Z06 rotors with the CTS-V or Camaro SS calipers is not the best utilization of the available pads, which have a radial height of 60mm versus the radial annular width of the friction face on the C6 Z06 rotor which is 52mm. The reality though is that it hangs off the inside of the rotor, not the outside as pictured above, but the end result is the same.
The 2010 Camaro SS rotor is a much better choice, has a wide annulus to match the pad height, and has about 3/16" more inboard offset than the C6 Z06 rotor. While you will need to machine the center bore to fit most pro-touring applications, the 5x120mm wheel pattern is close enough given the fact that they're drilled for M14 studs that it won't matter so long as the hub-centricity of the rotor is maintained.

So if the 5th gen camaro rotor and caliper bolt to the a/f/x stock style spindles then in theory you could bolt the 2nd gen six piston brembo cts-caliper and rotor to the a/f/x stock style spindle with the 2nd gen cts-v rotor. These are what I will be using I just haven't got to that point yet.

Flynbye says 14.5" rotors - are the rear Camaro SS rotors really larger than the fronts?

I'm currently going through this process also, lsxconcepts.com now make a bracket to fit the 5th gen callipers to a ridetech/ fatman spindle with a wildwood hub. I'm looking to fit these tomorrow hopefully.

Yes I am currently working on a rear prototype for the ford 9 that supports the parking brake. I have a hand built prototype bolted up and working and I just sent drawings over to have some sample production parts water jet cut. So I am hopefully only a few weeks from having a functioning production part. if anyone is interested send me a private message with your email and I will put you on my notification list, or visit the big brake section on my website and sign up for the notification. we we get ready for the first run of parts we will email everyone.
When I get some sample parts machined up I will post up some pictures.

Happy New Year everyone....
Great news, we have finished our prototypes and are getting all the information together to do a beta run on parts, I still have to crunch the numbers and figure out tooling and fixture plates for the CNC. but we should have some ordering information this coming week.... so keep an eye out, and I will also put together a few pictures of the prototypes and post them up as soon as I get a chance.
