So last night I'm on the road staying the night in IL 3.5 hrs away from home, got a call at 4:am from my wife that our garage was on fire, fully engulfed , and the roof collapsed ..

WTF??? huh ... she was woken up by loud bangs , went to see if it was an intruder, nope it was our garage in flames.

The bangs were from my tires popping......

Lost everything in the garage including the Regal known as Stage1Regal........

My son made this little tribute collage for me....

I saw your post on Facebook Chris, sorry man. This would be tough on anyone. I hope you had a great insurance policy, that will make life without Stage1 a bit easier.

Sorry to hear about the fire and the car, Chris. Hope this all gets amicably resolved with insurance and you get back up and running. Glad no one got hurt...other than the Stage I.

Thanks for the kind words guys.... hoping the insurance dosnt give me problems , it was plated and insured , but because we didn't drive it in the winter , it was minimal coverage , so have to see their take on it.

As for the cause , as of initial on the scene investigation , it seem to be the wiring to my florescent lights in there shorted out somehow , most of that wiring ran up the wall behind the freezer , ( the big white box to the right of the car.) , I didn't install them , the guy we're buying the house from had it done several, several years ago.. But they are going to bring a investigator out in the next couple days to comb thru it and see what he says.

Wow... That blows!! Thankful it wasn't the house with your family in it!!
Hopefully you come out ok on it all. You mentioned "the guy you're buying it from", does that mean you were going to or are buying it? Like renters or homeowners insurance?

That sucks - sorry to hear that for you! I hope you have property insurance of some sort and that it will cover the loss of your car since it's got bare minimum auto insurance coverage on it right now.

That's horrible man! I hope all the insurance company(ies) makes good on their obligations.
From my understanding, if there is no coverage on a stored car at a residence, the home policy covers the losses.
Build it all over again!

The Insurance Investigator just informed us that they concur with the Fire Cheif's assessment of the cause of our fire as electrical, a short in the wiring to the ballast in one of the garage lights or the ballast itself, causing the ballast to got hot and eventually catching my main center support beam on fire..., The garage clean up and rebuild will be covered by our landlord's insurance , but our stuff damaged by the fire has to be cleaned up and removed at our expense.
So now to get a decent day to get out there and sort thru the debris and salvage what we can , tools and hopefully my Regal's drivetrain and engine.

That Sucks - I've lost a Car to a Fire (but not a Garage). Good Luck with the Insurance

Anything such as a car or motorcycle has to have a separate policy. The homeowners policy won't cover it. If you are unaware, go visit your agent. I'm sorry for your loss.

Guys & gals,
This is why you need classic car insurance (agreed upon value coverage) through Hagerty (or similar) AND liability insurance from your normal insurance agent! First will protect car and second will protect your assets. Hagerty has my 84 Grand National and my 74 Z28 Camaro.

Ps...we all need to take photos of all our tools and tool boxes. Don't forget jacks and lifts.

I lost my uninsured boat to a fire back in 1984 (the one on the left)

We found the aluminum windshield frame of my Dad's boat in a puddle at the back of his shell.

I'll never forget the neighbor pounding on our door at 3 am waking us up to tell us about the fire...and watching the boats burn while the firemen were trying to get water flowing in the -5 degree temperatures.

I was 20 years old at the time and my insurance on the boat was canceled because State Farm figured out I wasn't 21 and they don't insure boats for those under 21 years old. I ended up getting $1000 from my Dad's homeowner's policy for "other people's property"... Had to sell everything I owned at the time to pay the loan off on the boat. Was a pretty valuable life lesson. Fire sucks...and is pretty scary too.
