2nd gen rusted subframemounts!

Hi.
I was about to remove the subframe and go about to loosen the rear two bolts, to my suprice its starts to rain rust from the body. The "nut" that I suppose is to be welded in the body is loose and spins around. When I lift the carpet I see that this "nut" is box in the floorpan! I guess I have to cut out a piece of the floor to get to the "nut" but then what?

What do I do to replace this rusted part of my floor? Do I have to buy two floorpans from Classic Industries (same on both sides) or can I buy smaller pieces of the floor else where or is there other options?

Dan - I had the same problem with my 73. I ended up cutting the floor and then folding it back (like the page of a book). My floors are in good shape so they cut/bent easily. The cage nut was a rusted mess though....I had to cut the cage and torch the bolt. I'm not sure if they sell replacement cage nuts, I went to the local hardware store and got a set of heavy duty Grade 8 nuts and bolts to use.

I believe they make repro subframe mounts with the cage nuts for first gens. You might be able to buy them and modify to fit your second gen.

ok, well I guess I could take a big nut and weld it in place, and a big bolt and just cut it in length to fit. My floors are also in nice condition otherwise so this should not be a problem.

Dan, if you weld it in place, you may have a time getting it lined up to get the bolt started, as the reason its in the cage is so itll have some play, which enables the bolt to get started, and to allow for minor "mis-alignments". Otherwise, youd hafta have it perfectly lined up.

Mc Master Carr sells the cage with the correct nut. Just cutout the old old one after folding back the floor pan as stated in a previous answer and weld the new one in. It'll have the same play as original making lining up the bolt as easy as it ever was. Chris

Ok thanks! I'll try to locate this Mc Master Carr :) otherwise I was thinking that I would bolt the subframe back on later and THEN weld it in place, that way it would be aligned right, if the bolt and nut was tightened before welding. but cagenut seems better.

Noticed two small problems though, they only list up to a 1/2" -13 thread and they are not rated. I know the first gens use a grade8 5/8" bolt. Classic Industries lists a subframe nut and cage for a 67-69 p/n C122. That might work for you.

Also, what is the torque spec for the subframe bolts?, i searched with no luck.
