I think I have made more progress on this car in the last 6 months than I have in the last few years. Last weekend I finally started the engine. I have some leaks to chase down and the used Speed Demon carb I bought leaks like a levee so I will have to rebuild it....but here is a link to a vid I shot the day after I first got it started. I have yet to do any tuning other that what was necessary to get it running.

I was logging on today to send you an email about posting pics with the new wheels. Good to see the wheels on the car. I think your wheel choice and size looks perfect on the car. Great looking coupe. I love the stance and everything about the car. I hope mine comes out half as nice as yours. Good job.

Actually you did talk me into those wheels...When I first started to entertain the notion of the FR500 wheels the only color I considered was silver. Then I started to consider the anthracite before settling on black after soliciting opinions from the guys whos car opinions I trust more than anybody else.

Thanks...It was fairly easy to calculate the fit of the 18" wheel/tire combo when I still had the 17" Cobra R's still on the car.
The exhaust is JBA shorties into a Dr. Gas x-pipe into Flowmaster Delta 40's and full tailpipes over the axle and out the back... all 2 1/2" and fully ceramic coated.
The cam is a 244 duration @ .050 Crower solid roller with .544" lift. The specs on this cam is one of their "street roller" SBC grinds. These street roller grinds do not require the huge spring pressures normally associated with solid roller cams...with the reduced pressure hopefully I will get some long term durability out of the lifters.

Hey KM,you going to put the trim back around the 1/4 extensions and trunk lid??? I have been unsure as to put this back on mine or not. BTW your car looks and sounds super!!! What size rear tires are they?? I have 285-30-18 Dunlop 9090 for the rear of mine and yours look close.

I planned on putting the trim on...although now I wish I had filled the holes in the end caps so that I did not have to....The trunk lid is a NOS piece that come without the holes drilled...I guess it would be easy to fill and refinish the endcaps...hmmmm. I also did not fill the holes for the rocker panel trim and now I wished I had as well....I might even leave off the drip rail trim...
The rear tires are 295/35-18 and they are close. The right side fits great and seems to have lots of clearance but the left side is much closer to the fender lip. The right q-panel was repalaced 20 odd years ago and is the likely reason for the disparity. To fix I am going to machine 1/8" to 3/16" off the mounting flange of the wheel.
Have you driven your car yet with the 285's....any problems?

Hi Jeff....I got the front wheels back yesterday after having the center cap retaining lip machined out of the center hole. This was interferring with the Baer front bearing hubs. So now I can re-install the front wheels without the 1/2" spacer. This along with a 1/4 poly coil spring spacer should resolve any tire to fender clearance issues. I could have opted for a 1" poly spacer but decided I would rather creap up on the correct ride height a little bit at a time. :fingersx:
Next up is I need to fabricate a 1" spacer for the upper shock mounting bracket to increase the almost non-existent shock travel. I have seen some people run individual spacers for each shock bolt but I am going to fab a spacer for the mounting bracket out of 1" aluminum plate that will also incorporate a means to mount the Monte Carlo with spherical rod ends.
Other than that I have been working on the interior. I have recovered and installed the front seats and am about to start working on the rear seat.
Still waiting on the painter to squirt my 67 Shelby style hood. I am already into this hood for $1500 and it has no paint yet on it. :pat:

Hi Rick...so that is your 68 Highland Green FB? I love that color...are you going back to the same color? I think Ron said something about you building it in the Bullit style...
His new shop is real nice and incredibly clean for one that is primarily a paint and body shop. The black 69/70 fastback is sweet...
After buying and reselling 2 different pos glass versions of this hood I got this original steel hood with a glass scoop "professionally" bonded to it. I bought it on eBay from a guy in Phoenix that said it was "ready for paint". I knew that I was going to have to fill the hood pin holes but it took an additional $1k (20 hours) to get it "ready for paint". In hindsight I would have been better off buying a new stell repro hood and having Ron bond the scoop to it.

Kevin,
Yeah that was my FB. It will be Highland green. Ron and I are talking about a ghost C stripe. He keeps calling it the Bullitt car. I guess with the color and I told him I was probably going to run 17 or 18" vintage 45's on it and very little Mustang badging it would be close to a bullitt clone, although its not an S code.
That black '69 is really sharp. It was there the first time I went to check out the shop, thanks again for recommending Ron, he is incredible. I'm glad he's not a woman, he can talk me into just about anything.
I was originally thinking of a fiberglass cowl hood, but when I saw your hood and Ron said he could do that to my steel hood that is what I'm doing now. Yours looked great.

05-22-2006, 01:16 PM
Rick...wise move on modifiying your steel hood. You would not have been happy with the fit of the glass hood...especially considering the amount of dime you are about to drop on the rest of the car.
My hood turned out ok but there are some paint problems that are of no fault of Rons...my car should be out there sometime next week for cut and buff...

For powder coating you can also try some friends of mine here http://www.custompowdercoating.com ask for Steve Martz, his wife Debbie use to work for the company I work for. They do good work...I had a lot of parts (rear end housing, misc brackets and front suspension components) done in satin black. For steel parts you might consider clear or yellow zinc plating as it makes a great "primer" for powdercoating.
I need the trim guys info too...I need to get the windshield and back window trim straightening and polished.

KMCanally,
What did you end up with for wheel/tire sizes? I'm looking at getting some 17x10's for the back but am not quite sure if they will fit yet. I know you were going to run a 18x10??? They are going to be foose nitrous thrust 17x8's w/ 235/540/17 on the front and 17x10 w/ 275/40/17 if they will fit on the back...
Also, any tips/tricks on how to measure for the backspacing?
Thanks

Yeah, another reason.. I stopped by on Thursday. I snapped a few pictures of your car (hope you dont mind), amazing detail work under the hood. I really liked the shock spacers, but are they going to work once the hood is on? Was it difficult to relocate the E brake handle?
Supposedly mine is going to the blaster on Tuesday, they did have my doors, hood and trunk in the booth to spray sealer.

I whittled those spacers on an old manual Bridgeport at work. I hope they fit as I did not have the hood to measure from before I built them. I was originally going to use 1" plate but decided on 3/4" for that reason. I am going to steal some play-doh from my daughters and take it up there to "witness" the clearance before we first close the hood all the way. It is also going to be real close on the air cleaner. I am running a 1" carb spacer that I might have to change to 1/2". I hope I will not need any less than that because that is the typical thickness of an NOS plate...
Good to hear they are making progress on yours...there is only one way to eat an elephant...one bite at a time.

The Talbot, since it has the wider base, I'm hoping they wont have to redrill the drivers side holes. The wheels in the drawing look kinda like late model Mustang wheels, I was thinking TT's for a while but saw some 17" Vintage 45's and I really like them, and I think they will be less maintenance as well since the centers are grey, I'm thinking the Ghost C stripe will be the same shade to mathc the wheels.

I've been thinking about mirrors all day. I dont think the 70ish sport mirrors would look right, but I kinda think the 65-66 mirrors would look kinda cool on there. Its weird, with all that rubber your car has this hugely aggressive stance, but I think the round mirrors would look better than the square 67-68 mirrors.

Was it difficult to relocate the E brake handle?
Sorry I missed this earlier. Not really, I just cut a hole in the tunnel and bolted it in. It is from Locar and I also bought their cable kit specifically for the vette (Baer) caliper. The guys at Baer said that the e-brake requires a handle like this to get enough leverage to locks the brakes. However, because the car is so low the cable would have to go through the frame rail to attach to the caliper. Second problem was that the cable brackets on the calipers were hitting the inner fenders when the suspension compressed...so I just finally took them off. I am going to flip the caliper mouting bracket to try and position the caliper such that the cable bracket is more centered between the leaf spring and the frame rail.
Fast68back
06-13-2006, 06:33 AM
I have the Lokar cable that I bought through Currie when I bought the 9" rear. I have the explorer rear disk kit with drilled and slotted rotors. I'm kinda kicking myself now that I wish I had gone with the baers in the back as well since I have them in the front. I'll probably end up swapping them when I start re-assembly.
I think I would eventually like to get a center console kinda like the "E" cars are running and keep the stock E brake handle, I thought yours looked pretty cool when I saw it.

Also, saw this post on the Mustang site, another mirror option

My car still has not gone to the blasters, but what will not be blasted is in sealer

06-16-2006, 03:42 PM
Thanks...I went by yesterday after dropping off my window trim at the Runtes...I assume this is the same info you have. If he gets the trim done soon I will go ahead and have Ron put it back on. Those mirrors are a bit much for me...I will probably go stock rectangular or maybe the 65/66 round ones like you suggested.
Actually I believe the paint is 10 years old...I started to build this car when I was single and could do what the f I wanted to do. Then the job got crazy, got married, had kids, remodeled the first house, then built a new house....So I just worked on the car a little here and there as time and money allowed.

Cool that the spacers worked, they look sharp on there. I'll try and run over at lunch on Tuesday so I can see it with the hood on. Besides I want to get a couple shots of your engine bay. You have a pretty cool clutch rod with the spherical rod ends, did you make it or buy it? I had the Ron Morris cable on the car before I tore it down, I dont think I'm going to put it back on though, thinking maybe the JME hydraulic set up. I bookmarked a thread about a "do it your self" hydraulic set up with a parts list, I may look at that option as well, they are pretty proud of that JME set up $$.
kmcanally
06-23-2006, 06:41 PM
I built the clutch linkage with spherical rod ends to eplace all of the pos plastic bushings. Plus I had to modify the stock z-bar to work with the JBA shorties. I considered going hydraulic at one point when I realized the stock z-bar would not work. Then I saw a setup like mine on a vintage legal road race car at the shop Ron used to work in when he painted my car (Winged Graphics) and decided that was the way to go. It all works real well plus I have the added benefit of being able to adjust it without going underneath the car.

No I didn't I just rebuilt the stock stuff and put plenty of grease on it. When it needs replacing I will either build my own roller setup or buy one.
While on the subject of roller bearings...are you running the roller spring perches? I am not but word from the people that have them is that they make a very noticable difference...I need to order me a set of them.
Fast68back
06-24-2006, 06:13 AM
Yeah, I bought a set when the mustang forum did a group buy on them from a company called Alpec engineering. Mustang Depot in Las Vegas sells them and I believe Street and track, http://www.streetortrack.com/Spring-Perches-c-928.html sells them as well. You can also buy the pieces and build your own, this guy, http://home.bresnan.net/%7Edazed/test has some decent prices on the kits. People on the Mustang Forum swear by the roller perches, but I have 0 miles on mine so really cant say anything good or bad other than they are noticeably less binding than stock perches. Ron asked about mine and I gave him the same website info.
I'm thinking of taking my pedal assembly to Mustang Steve, http://www.mustangsteve.com/clutchbearings.html and having him do my pedals, since they are out of the car anyway.

Sweet! To bad you had to buy all that other stuff just to get the carb spacer......:bananna2: Your not gonne leave it purple are ya?
BTW- what are the specs on your engine (who built it)? My current engine is basically stock, thinking of going with a 331 or 347 crate motor with ARP aluminum heads, maybe add a paxton later (sooner if I hit the lotto tonight). Oh yeah, Ron told me your is "pretty strong" with a grin....
kmcanally
06-25-2006, 03:57 AM
For now it will stay purple...The main reason I selected this over say a NOS or Edelbrock one was the perimeter injection plate design http://www.zex.com/Base/Video/ZEXPlate_WEB.wmv ...pretty cool (pun intended).
I built the motor. It is a 68 302 block bored .030 and machined by Reher-Morrison racing engines in Arlington, stock crank and rods with SPS rod bolts, forged TRW 12.5:1 pistons that yield about 11:1 compressions with 64cc chambers, Crower solid roller cam with 244 deg duration @ .050 and .540" lift, out of the box Edelbrock RPM heads with the 2.02 intakes, Edelbrock Victor Jr. Intake, and a Quick Fuel 650 carb.
This motor will never see more than a 100 or maybe 150 shot. Although the cam makes good power up to almost 7k rpm I will keep a 6k limit chip in the MSD box to try and enhance durability with the basically stock short block.
I have a 74 351W block in the garage that I plan on building into a 427 stroker. Ultimately I would like to build an blown aftermarket block based big inch Windsor that can really take the boost...reliably.
In the meantime I will play with the nitrous...at the next Dallas Mustang Parts open house (should be sometime in the fall) I am going to put it on the chassis dyno and see what it will do both NA and sprayed with a 100 shot.

The hood worked out really good, the one big dent on the hood was right in the section he cut out for the scoop. Ron is also not opening the holes in the front of the scoop as much as most hoods to keep it stronger and avoid cracking.

Drop me a note when you get back and we'll work something out. Enjoy the vacation!
Did you have anything rechromed? I'm thinking about having my door handles and back up lights done rather than by repro stuff. You know of any good shops?

I had my vent window and rear quarter window frames rechromed by a company called Show & Go plating in Richardson.

Well it's back home...and I have reinstalled the back bumper, lights and gas cap...I also replaced the 1" carb spacer with the 1/2" nitrous plate so I could close the hood all the way. Going to be on vacation with the family for the next week...after I return I will install the door handles and the rest of the trim before finishing the nitrous install. Then its off to the Yellow Rose All Ford Show in Ft. Worth in August.https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2006/06/IMG_4156-1.jpg

Looks like you have the window trim on there as well. How did it turn out after the polisher worked on them?

Polisher did a good job...I had Ron put it on before I brought it home.

Car looks killer!! It looks like in some of your pics you have the deep dish fr500's on the back. Did they not quite fit right? Hope to see it in person at the Yellow Rose.

I just got back from a weeks vacation...thanks for all the kind comments...I hope to spend some time working on it tomorrow...
I tried to run the deep dish 18x10 295/35 combo but it rubbed a little bit on the inside and out...so it was either raise it up or go smaller. I chose smaller and am real happy with it...seems to look more "balanced" with the smaller setup in the back.

I am normally not a blue oval fan or a mustang fan for that matter, but I love the look of your 68'. Everything about it seems to fit, from the paint color to the wheels/stance, Etc. It looks outstanding as a whole and is an all around great looking car. :twothumbs Keep up the great work.....

Thanks for the compliment...I am trying to decide if I am going to run the rocker panel moulding or not. And even though the holes are there I like it without the moulding. I am going to mock it up tonight and take some pics.

Im sure this is mentioned in here somewhere, but what size wheel spacers, if any are you running in the rear?

There are no spacers on the back...and a 1/4" spacer up front to keep the rim off of the UCA at full lock.

What did you do with the 18x10's? Do you still have them?

i have learned from this board and a few others that brand loyalty is stupid. today i turned 18 and a couple years ago i would have said burn the thing because it was a ford. its stupid. im with nvrdun. you have to give a builder credit where it is due. this car looks amazing and seems to be one whole well put together machine. great job!

except for installing the trunk mldg (waiting on hardware) I need to decide on whether to run the rocker panel mldg or not. Also waiting on some fittings to finish plumbing the fuel line into the fuel solenoid for the ZEX perimeter plate nos. Besides that I am done...

Thanks for the compliments...Ron Mohr at Mohr Restorations in North Richland Hills Texas did the hood. He is currently doing another one just like it for another member here (PonyCar'68) whose car is there getting the full rotisserie treatment.

Can you give me more specifics on your suspension and wheels?
I am looking at doing anthracite FR500's to my 67 and need a little nudge in the right direction.

The front suspension all Global West parts and the wheels are 2005+ Mustang size 18x9 FR500 wheels that I had narrowed 1" with 245/40 tires. The rear suspension has Global West leaf springs that I had de-arched 2". The wheels are 18x09 97-04 Mustang wheels and the tires are 274/40.

Thanks...the only thing I have done recently is finish the dedicated fuel system for the N20. Other that that I have just been driving it...although lately it has been too hot to do that, except for the once a month Cars & Coffee.
