my 70 Camaro has polished stainless 2.5" magnaflows on it right now and idling it's not too loud. The problem is cruising down the road it really gets noisy in the car and when you stand on it the thing sounds almost like an old FWD chevy truck with 5" dumps on it!! I want it quiet........has anyone used the Walker Quietflow 3 mufflers or anything VERY quiet? I liked the old-school sound of turbo mufflers before all the dynamax and flow-disaster stuff came out. Exhaust is all 2.5", has an H-pipe and it dumps out just aft of the rear wheels(rather than all the way back) which could be a noise issue as well but my 71 Nova was NEVER this bad!! Any suggestions would be great. I plan on it being at the muffler shop Friday while I'm off for the Christmas break. Thanks!!

Put tailpipes on it & all that will go away. I've run a lot of different mufflers on different cars over the years and the magnaflows you have were among the quietest at idle/cruise. DUmps create a ton of drone & no matter what mufflers you pick it will likely get you the same result. I can recommend a local shop if you need some tailpipes bent up.

Randy Jernigan is the only guy who does any of my exhaust work. It's not dumping under the car and I've had quite a few cars with this same setup(exits just behind the rear wheels) and this is by far the most obnoxious one for sound that I've ever had. Don't like the way the 2nd gen Camaro looks with taiplipes coming out the rear. Hoping to find something more mellow sounding. When I stand on it I might as well have hollowed out glasspacks!! lol Thanks Scott, Bill

Ok I misundersttod your setup. Can you extend the pipes so they exit further back near the tailpan? They dont have to hang down, just end them flush with bottom of the 1/4. Or do you have room for some small resonators? Seems like they are all loud under WOT. Could always try those old school turbo mufflers, they are cheap! If you end up not using the magnaflows let me know.

here's a pic of the dumps on it. You can barely see the one in the right 1/4. They extend about an inch past the bottom of it. Thinking about a little more angle maybe to keep it from resonating off the ground so much. I LOVE the look of the polished mufflers but like I said, stand on it and it just sounds like old worn out glasspacks on a rusty Ford truck!!

Do you have any sound deadener installed? If not that might help a lot.

there's a small amount in the rear deck area Chris and I'm going to chnage that before I try to drive it to Daytona for the spring Turkey Run. Still can't stand that sound. I'd almost rather hear an SLP loudmouth system.....and that makes my skin CRAWL!! ;)

I've got the dyno max 20 inch hemi super turbos and they are much quieter then my flowsmasters were.
This db test wha taken 3ft from the end of the pipe
Muffler comparison
Idle 3000 rpm

Strait pipes 112db 115db
Flowmaster 40. 100 db 106.5db
Supper hemi turbo. 97db 100db

I am also switching to Dynomax Super Turbos this winter. I currently have the Flowmaster 40 series mufflers with tail pipes and it's too loud for my tastes. It's tolerable at idle, but at WOT it is just plain LOUD. I'm getting older (36 now) and loud exhaust is annoying. I personally do not mind giving up a little HP in exchange for quieter exhaust.

I did look into the Walker Quietflows but could not find one small enough to fit under the floor boards of my car. The muffler body length were all too long to tuck up nicely.

I say the car is too loud and want to make it more quiet....under acceleration I don't like it to sound like an old 4wd pickup with 5" dumps........obviously this didn't soak in to you..........good God

Was my comment directed at you tuff guy?

Show me a old 4x4 with 5" dumps.

If it's too loud your too old.

Buy a prius, they are quiet, probably right up your alley!

How can you have ever owed a Pony car/muscle car and not know which are the quiet mufflers on the market? That's pretty common knowledge since 1985?

My 69 396 Camaro has 3" stainless with magnaflow mufflers turned down past the rear tire...... Its not loud at all. Easily carry on conversations on the freeway with all the windows down. I dynamated most of the rear half of the car.

Golly Mr. know it all/had it all/done it all, i suppose there's nobody on here who has as much technical expertise as you do or done as many things as you or has as cool of a car either so I guess my question was beneath your Godliness. Excuse the rest of the world for being beneath your shoes. All I wanted to know was what muffler(s) might make it somewhat more easy on the ears. Exhaust technology has changed since I built my 66 nova back in 1974 and as I built 35-40 other hotrods since. The same dynomax super turbo's I used on my all matching number 66 caprice bbc car won't sound the same as the spintecs on my 3rd gen with a 6.0 LSx that ran 6.20's on radials through full exhaust. It was a frikken question you putz. Go bother somebody else or say something constructive........or is that beneath you as well?

Longer bigger casing in the mufflers usually quiet down the mufflers. And more pipe does the trick I rand starlight back to the bumper on my old 69 Chevy C10. And it was quieter the mine now that I have mufflers and pipe all the way to the frnt rear tire

"I ran starlight back to the bumper on my old 69 Chevy C10."

That is what I would do. Have them exit at the rear bumper area. If still to loud you can always install some resonators to tone it down.

I'm running 2.5" dual exhaust with Dynomax Super Turbo's with resonators. I'm also running high-flow cats (only because at 41 I'm not into the raw exhaust smell anymore).

But with this setup, it makes just enough noise to keep the muscle car image, but it's by no means "loud", even under WOT. And no drone either.
