custom tri y headers

I was thinking of building tri y headers for my big block chevelle, but instead of starting from scratch, I thought of starting with some bare mid length headers and cutting off the collectors then adding the tri y collector. Has anyone else ever done this or will it be a total waist of time?

It will take a LONG time but can be done. I made my own 180 degree headers from a kit from summit, 1 5/8 18ga tube. It was just an assortment of random lengths and bends, around $160. Took about 2 weeks. Came out great tho
