We picked up this '72 last summer but it wasn't getting much attention due to the Mustang needing to be finished before SEMA. So now that SEMA is over it is finally time to get everyone involved with this project. The plan is to build a budget oriented street/track vehicle that will be both competitive and comfortable and yet still retain the main qualities of a Truck. This thing will more than likely end up towing the Camaro to events. This will also be our new product development and testbed vehicle for all future parts. Here is what we started with:https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/100_6644_zpsfddc703a-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/100_6644_zpsfddc703a.jpg.html)https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/100_6655_zpsce70ed9f-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/100_6655_zpsce70ed9f.jpg.html)https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/IMG_2017_zpsebe273aa-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/IMG_2017_zpsebe273aa.jpg.html)https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/IMG_2023_zps291802c0-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/IMG_2023_zps291802c0.jpg.html)https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/IMG_2024_zpsdad4cb0a-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/IMG_2024_zpsdad4cb0a.jpg.html)

Time to start blasting it apart.

We've been playing with a few different rear suspension set-ups trying to find the least compromising. I think the guys have come up with something that fits perfectly but I can't post pics of what they're up to yet.

The front is going to be interesting as well. It will be fun to try out some of these longer Ridetech shocks on this application.

I believe we're going to be playing musical engines very soon. I've been looking for a takeout LSx for the Camaro. That way we can put the Camaro engine in the C10.

The first articles have had a few revisions through development but we're getting close.

Here, Ed is changing the anti-dive angle to 7.5.

We also revised the crossmember. We raised it up to frame another inch and put a degree tilted back.

Sales-TCI-Eng
02-27-2014, 08:29 AM
We will be using a new to us bushing on this front end. The traditional bushings we use weren't big enough so Energy is making us a new set. They will of course have the lubrication valley machined in to I/D to keep them from squeeking. I'll get some pics today sometime.

So it looks like you removed the old front cross member and have made a new bolt in?????????

Sales-TCI-Eng
03-12-2014, 08:10 AM
Yes, our crossmember will replace the factory stamped piece that hangs waaaaaaay to low. We are also going to design our own spindle after realizing we couldn't accomplish all that we set out to with stock type spindles. There is just too much compromise when going that route, turning radius, engine placement, steering geometry etc etc.

-J

- Could I interest you in a nice problem solving spindle??

Sales-TCI-Eng

We had thought about using your spindle Rob. We also deliberated on using our Custom IFS spindle. This new spindle will be very similar dimensionally to the factory C10 casting but with a removable steering arm. Stock rotors and ball joints can be used.

J,
Do you have the factory A/C pump laying around there? If you do, try to bolt it on. Hopefully it clears in the stock location.

Sales-TCI-Eng

It wouldn't even clear the engine mount plates(without the engine in the chassis).

Double checking the geometry

Things to note: Driver side spindle is different than Passenger. The passenger side design is our new custom set-up. It is based on a C10 pin and uses the factory lower ball joint with a heavy duty Moog upper. The steering arm is removable and helped us attain the geometry and turning radius we desired.

I checked it a few months ago and the front crossmember was 7" off the ground with a 26" tall tire. I know they've made some revisions to the crossmember, spindles and control arms since then so I will double check it asap.

WOW!!! With a 26" tall tire the crossmember will be 5.5" off the ground with a dropped spindle.

If I missed the explanation in an earlier post I apologize.
My only thoughts are perhaps this rear end is for mock up purposes?

The most readily available track we have is called Adams Motorsports Park. It's a 3/4 mile track that is technical with speeds averaging 60 mph. This will likely be the place where most of the testing happens but I wouldn't rule out Willow Springs or the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

We were out at Adams two weeks ago in our '68 Camaro. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbifSIHhmb0&list=UUdwmfUxRXrdmGfxpvg0DH0g

Parts are looking good. Quick question you might know the answer to. I have a 71 chevy c10 stepside, but I have an extra frame from a gmc, same year model. I've had this extra one for quite a few years, and the thought hit me that I could get the gmc frame ready without having to tear my truck apart until I'm ready to do bodywork. I know the gmc is leaf spring, but is all the dimensions the same so I could change it to a coil spring setup with the trailing arms? My plans are to change about all of the rear suspension anyway including rear axle, break, trailing arms etc.. Will this work?

I can't confirm anything at this point but if it has leafs my guess would be that it is different. Probably 3/4 Ton esque which if that is the case would mean the front will work but not the rear. We will definitely be looking into it in full detail now that you brought it up.

Not yet, but we are very close to releasing the rear suspension kit.

Here are some of the pics from the Shockwave mock up yesterday (based on a 26" tall tire). This is with the 2" Ridetech shock extension, I am hopeful the 1" top will clear the control arm cross shaft. This will give another 1.125"-1.25" of compressed travel but will keep the suspension below its designed operating range. I will mock these up today sometime just to know.

Our bumper is bent up on the driver side so the frontal view looks a little off. The driver side is roughly an inch higher than the passenger.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/IMG_7041_zpse7993f83-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/IMG_7041_zpse7993f83.jpg.html)

This picture is a little deceiving because I couldn't get the camera low enough to get the true height. The crossmember is closer to 1.5".

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/IMG_7048_zps6a592b45-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/IMG_7048_zps6a592b45.jpg.html)

The front frame head just behind the front bumper. Keep in mind that the rear suspension is still at ride height so once it is aired down this height will actually go up.

Our shop is busy and full leading up to SEMA so we teamed up with Mark Oja from Custom Rod Garage to help us test fit our IFS on a Square body. This is Mark's personal truck. It is a low mileage, 3rd owner truck that is completely unmolested.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/IMG_7909_zpsbc33994a-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/IMG_7909_zpsbc33994a.jpg.html)

The frame rails are taller on the Square body so we will need to rework the upper shock mount and our inner frame plate.

The top of the rail is also narrower on the Square body.

So we took a ton of measurements and pictures and we will rework the necessary pieces and try again.

Here is a preview of the Installation Manual for the IFS. I am still working with R&D to come up with a simple way to cut the early ('63-'66) inner panels to clear the shock mount.

I got a 67 swb chevy and am deciding between buying a whole new frame or getting something like this. does the rear torque arm listed on your site allow for bigger tires? or would it be the same sizes if the frame was stock? I know cutting the bed is needed. thanks, Kenny.

Kenny,

Yes, our kit will allow a wider wheel/tire package with the tubs/bed opened up. We are still confirming a bunch of details at this point so as more info gets passed to me I will post it here.

Will you have your shop truck out competing at events in '15? And/or, have you guys drove one of these yet?

The last few months have been so busy that were way behind schedule on the C10. We hope to have it drivable by sometime in January now. About a month ago we realized things weren't progressing how they should so we got one of our dealers involved so they're building one as well. Their truck should be up and running any day now.

quick question, with the rear being coil over, you have eliminated the need for the trailing arms, does that mean you have gotten rid of the trailing arm x-member also? And if so, what would you estimate the weight savings being?

edit: oh... never mind, went through again and saw the link arms

I know it's been a while since a real update on our shop truck. Unfortuantely, we've just had too many new development projects lately so the truck has been collecting dust. So recently I approached Ed the owner and Sal the VP about spending my lunch and breaks working on the truck. This led to a situation where I would work towards finishing it and eventually it would be available for me to purchase. I've been wanting one for a long time so I am hopeful this will work out.

So anyways, with some freedom to proceed how I choose I began to mock up some things. First and foremost I put some shock simulators in place to mimick full compression of the 5.2" travel ridetech coilovers. Then I placed some wheel simulators in place mimicking 26" tall tires. I know this is probably less than what some may run but I plan to run 18x12 wheels all the way around with a 315/30/18 Falken tire which is 25.5".

Here is a pic with the frame at full compression.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/05/20170511_173655_zps24chuplm-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20170511_173655_zps24chuplm.jpg.html)

The frame under the front cab mount is 5" off the ground.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/05/20170511_173732_zpsg3hqwxqz-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20170511_173732_zpsg3hqwxqz.jpg.html)

Something that has been lingering in the back of my head is the original upper shock mounts we made for the front end. The engineers ditched this design early on because the truck sat too low. Basically the inner fender had to be raised with them so they felt our kit wouldn't go this route. Anyways, we still have a couple of the original design mounts sitting in a box. There is roughly 2.5" difference in height between these.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/05/20170511_173811_zpsvz07e18z-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20170511_173811_zpsvz07e18z.jpg.html)

The rear axle sits above the frame so 1.25" bump stops are usually utilized.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/05/20170511_173717_zpsfe8spdxt-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20170511_173717_zpsfe8spdxt.jpg.html)

On a sidenote, we began designing the Squarebody rear suspension.

Worked on the rear boxing plates. I removed the standard bolt-on frame plate that comes with the Torque Arm kit and placed it on top of the rail. I don't need to step the rails that far to get the desired ride height but it was a good starting point.

The frame is countoured in this area so I will have to put two bends in the new boxing plate to match the frame. R&D is really busy right now so I might not wait for them to draw these up and cut them on the plasma table. I might just trace and cut them out with the hand held plasma. Sure it's dirty but I am trying to get this thing back to a roller by the Brothers Truck Show.

The Holley Hi-Ram is in our possession now so we can actually do some mock up with the coils. There is plenty room to mount them underneath it. We just want to make sure that they are serviceable somewhat easily. Probably make a one piece removable shaft so they come out as a unit.

Some more major components have arrived. We haven't done a bagged shop project in a few years so this is kinda exciting. Ridetech triple adjustable shockwaves 5" travel front and 6" travel rear. Dual 3 gallon tanks, dual pumps and their pressure based ride control system.

I always wondered if that setup would work underneath the Holley or the Edelbrock intakes. I never got to find out on my own since I'm carbureted. I'm looking forward to a final product to see how you did it. The only major concern would be too much heat.

I've spoke with a few engine builders and the consensus is that it's just as hot on the valve cover by the exhaust. Not as much ventilation though.

So the thing about boost. It's just a measurement of restriction. Less restriction, more flow at a given pressure. On a naturally aspirated LQ4 these 230cc AFR heads would be overkill. I've already said too much. Those that know me, know the direction this is headed.

Skrape never datalogged IAT's on track. His engine compartment lacked the room to properly build a CAI. He also lacked the grill space for a properly sized FMIC. I wouldn't doubt his IAT's were approaching 200 on a 100 degree day simply because the turbo inlet was pulling 150 degree temps out of the engine compartment.

There would be little difference in IAT's between a centrifugal blower and a turbo if the compressor wheels were the same and both were pulling ambient air into the inlet.

I guess I just defended myself into letting the cat out of the bag. hehe

Put the radiator in front of the tailgate and just have a big intercooler where the radiator used to be. 8^)

The C10 has plenty grill space to fit even the biggest A2A. I bet one of Gale Banks' diesel FMIC would fit. Plus, this truck will be a work truck first so having a usable bed is a must.

-JI give myself the same criteria - usable bed. I "think" one could put a radiator in front of a (vented) tailgate and still have the bed be usable in some way. Though obviously the tailgate could no longer go down.

One thing I am against is stacking an air-to-air intercooler in front of (or behind) a radiator. God forbid there is also an oil cooler and/or AC condenser in the stack. The unit at the tail end of the stack gets blasted with hot air, and the reduced air flow due to all the restriction just hampers efficiency too much for my taste. My goal is to mount all air-cooled heat exchangers in unique locations with their own dedicated flow of air.

I've owned quite a few heavily modified turbo cars over the years. The only issue I've ever encountered with a large FMIC is higher A/C pressures. I even had a front mounted A2A that was converted to A2W so there was literally no air going thru it. The core blocked half the radiator and it never had any cooling issues.

The '72 C10 grill has an upper and lower grill opening each with 162 sq/in. The core support opening is 420 sq/in. I will build ducting forcing air from the grill to the core support opening based on whatever I/C design I go with.

I will attack this one of two ways. I am generalizing core sizes in order to explain the difference.
#1 Use a 6" thick I/C core that is roughly half the height of the core support opening(7.5"). That way half of the radiator is getting clean air from the grill, the other half has 6" of I/C core obstruction.

#2 Use a 3" thick I/C core that is the full height of the core support opening (15"). The radiator isn't getting clean air at all but there is only 3" of I/C core obstruction.

I will likely end up with something in between these two. There are other cooling considerations as well, tranny, power steering, brakes and of course A/C. There will be some trial and error with it all. After the issues we've had with #projectReddawn I also have concerns about too much air entering. We installed Track Spec motorsports vents in the hood to alleviate high speed lift.

Let's be honest. This thing is going to light the tires up at will. We've purposely moved the power curve to the right with those heads and intake. We'll also gear it tall to try to make it somewhat drivable on the smaller courses. Even on wastegate spring it's going to be a handful.

I am most excited about getting out to some half mile events, turning it up and letting it eat.

We finally got the frame rails back from sandblasting. Well......they only baked it apparently. Anyways, waited this long so we are moving on.

One of the guys in the shop mentioned that we had a chassis dolly in storage. He thought it was sturdy enough to build a temporary fixture out of so we took a few guys down there and grabbed it. Sure enough, this thing is a monster and honestly I am kinda glad that it is short. This way I can place the cab and bed on it if need be. Will come in handy with doing a body drop. :secret:

I had to install a CPP driveshaft loop because the stock one would interfere with the chassis dolly.

I am finally back in town so it's time to make some real progress. I spent my lunch today tracing and cutting one of the rear boxing plates. It's sucks that I had to cut it with the hand held plasma vs. the hi-def but I can't wait for R&D to draw the plate(they're super busy finishing up the squarebody 4-Link).

So basically what we have done is give the rear suspension an extra 3.5" of travel. The bottomed out height before is where the new set up will be at ride height. I left the rail height at 6" at the step so there is plenty of strength for towing.

Dimensionally I am pretty happy with the outcome. Side to side height is perfect and front to back placement are within 1/32". I am off .25 degree of vertical on the driver side(should have cross braced it before the heat). I've still got work to do on it cosmetically though.

Got some cool(errr hot) parts ordered this week. :naughty: No picture tease yet but parts are on the way. Getting real close to engine/tranny mock up.

The frame is absolutely ugly right now but the fitment is pretty darn good. Had to section the top and bottom(note the cut) in order to pull the outer wall of the frame into the step. Still have to clean it up before laying down a bead.

I wanted to add a little extra bracing inside the frame rail where the front shock mounts. Main reason is our engine mounts triangulate the frame and the crossmember but I am setting the engine back. It's a just a piece of 1x2.120w tubing

Started working on the front boxing plates. I cut the driver side with the handheld plasma like I did the rears. Once it fit I used that as the tamplate for the passenger side. There will be a filler plate added to the top of the rail to close the gap.

So about 5:30 last night I'm in the shop and Ed(Owner of TCI) comes walking out of his office. I'm sitting on a short stool inside the cab just staring at the dash contemplating things. Ed says "You know, when I was building my Mustang I wish I would have cut the dash out. It would have made my life much easier". That was all I needed to hear. I grabbed a sharpie and started marking it up. Removed the few retaining bolts and fired up the plasma cutter. I left a one inch flange to attach the replacement dash to later.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/10/20171004_172738_zpssem8ihqu-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20171004_172738_zpssem8ihqu.jpg.html)

With the dash out it became very clear to me how the tunnel and firewall should be cut. I knew I wanted to push the engine back, I just didn't know how much.

Once you exceed 3-4" of setback things start to get interesting (difficult). However, once you go beyond 3-4" it's not much different to go 10-12" vs. 6". In the position below the engine is back 10" from the factory location.

We have a few different sets of headers sitting around the shop we use for mock up. Of all the ones I tried our own off the shelf headers fit the best. Mainly because the rear cylinder primaries go forward slightly before going down. This actually allowed me to move the engine back another 2.5"(12.5" total) with relative ease. I had to raise the engine in order to keep the pans(engine & tranny) above the bottom of the frame anyway. It had to go up over an inch(too much) in order to keep the transmission tabs off the tunnel. Now I've got clearance issues with the intake manifold. Next week I'll trim the tunnel a little more where the tranny tabs are interfering so I can bring the engine down roughly 1/2". This may or may not be enough to clear the intake manifold again.

Needless to say if the engine stays this far back I will have a constant foot warmer.

I'm in full support of putting that engine back as far as possible. Have you set the final engine position yet? How much further back will it be from stock? Looks like at least 12inches!

That last pic is 12.5" back. Haven't really decided where final placement will be.

Haven't made much progress lately. Ed and I have been discussing the chassis center section and engine placement at length. There is no physical way to lower the engine in place so we've decided to build a removable lower section of the chassis. It will have 6 attachment points and allow the body/chassis to be lowered over the top of it. I've built this over and over in my head so many times that I get disappointed when I walk into R&D and see that it isn't physically built yet. I should start on it today though.

Much like the engine placement, cab placement is still up in the air. I had read and spoke to a few C10 builders that if you body drop .75" the bottom of the pinch weld will be dead even with the bottom of the frame. That's not the case on this truck. I am currently using our Camaro 3/8" spacers(which are roughly.75" less than the stock rubber mounts) between the cab and frame mounts and the pinch weld is still well below the bottom of the frame. On top of that the rear of the cab is lower than the front, using the frame as reference. This kind of works to my advantage though. I had kinda wanted to tilt/rake the whole body down a degree or two in the front. My plan is to make the bottom of the cab parallel to the bottom of the frame.

All of that means that the core support bushings will also need to be modified to assume the new angle. This pic is with roughly 1" less thickness.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/10/IMG_20171025_161837_001_zps2eeuwfbr-1.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/IMG_20171025_161837_001_zps2eeuwfbr.jpg.html)

I was at a stand still with cab placement because I wanted the pinch weld rolled up flat. I'm an OCD photog so i've seen way to many good looking trucks be ruined by the pinch weld.

SEMA, Pleasanton & Scottsdale, 3 weekends in a row working out of town has slowed progress on the C10.

We needed a little room under the cab for intercooler piping.

Started working on the chromoly center section. Form fitted around the tranny on the bottom side. The two middle tubes aren't mounted yet. There will be a couple cross braces added for the tranny mount & driveshaft loop.

*NOTE* The relationship between the front of the bell housing and the cab mount. ;)

The Torque Arm will end up filling out this space so I needed to devise a way to gain clearance. It took some thought to get the angles right but the bend came out perfect (Even though chromoly deflects so much after being bent).

Still plugging away on the center section. Built the main tranny hoop and tied it in with some downbars. It is just tacked in place at this time. I still need to throw the cab back on to confirm placement. It'll make sense why the tubes are on top of the frame once the cab is back on.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2017/12/01/20171201_0756221.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/aroH)

We had our friends at California Rebuilt Exchange build us a quick ratio manual rack. Yes, that's right, a manual rack with what will likely be 315 or 335 tires on the steering axle. I better start eating all the spinach.

In all seriousness though. We are going to begin testing the feasability of running EPAS with our suspension. I figure that if it can handle this type of load & abuse then pretty much every other application will be just fine.

I had hinted at why the chassis cross bars were mounted above the frame rails earlier. The cab has two raised areas in the floor that the tubes line up with. This allows maximum exhaust clearance through the center section. Might even try to incorporate additional cab mounts and seat mounts into them. If you've been paying attention you've seen a couple different pics of engine set back options. I think "The Sweet Spot" has been found, see pic for measurement.

Slowly making progress on mounting the bed sides. I cut a fairly big strip out first and then just trimmed little by little in order not to cut too much. It is a long process but the fitment was perfect. The goal was to keep the factory internal bed body lines for looks and strength. Just kinda sandwiched them closer together. The inner panel will require a little more work once I get the main structure together.

Been trying to get the bed back to a solid piece for safe removal. Made some closeout panels for the outer structure and fitted them up this morning.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/03/05/20180305_080230.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/X0IMm)

Made a cardboard template (oversized of course so I could trim to fit)

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/03/05/20180305_080338.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/X0kGP)

So I kinda skipped a picture/step here. I cut a few slits in the lip and rolled the edge before laying the new panel in place. The top is butt welded, the bottom is laid inside of the lip.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/03/05/20180305_125805.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/X0dYN)

This should at least hold the structure in place so I can remove the bed, disassemble and fully weld on a bench (comfortably).

I wish the rear trailing arm set up was for the leaf spring as well for the GMC trucks . How does it work with the leaf spring set up can you use the same rear end etc or are you making a kit for leaf springs for use with the rear torque arm set up. I would like to do a long bed GMC that has leafs.

I am running out of room real fast. While the mufflers will be fairly small, leaving enough room around them for other things will make it a tight fit. The engine and tranny oil coolers will likely have to sit vertical, outside the frame rails. The air under the bed will be stagnant so not really sure how to combat heat other than to keep things as far away from each other as possible.

If it is a long bed then more than likely it has a two piece driveshaft. If it has the two piece D/S than it will have the proper crossmember to mount our brackets to. our rear crossmember is pretty straight forward to install whether it has the existing locating holes on the frame or not. From what we've seen with other customers is that some frames have the holes and some don't. Just mark the axle centerline before pulling it apart so it's easy to place the c-notches. Our frame plates (c-notches) are contoured to match the stock frame so there isn't much room for error on placement. The stock crossmember that we mount the anti-sway bar to is further forward than on the non leaf trucks. They can be relocated if you opt for the anti-sway bar. The factory leaf pads will need to be replaced with our pads and in the proper location (The stock location of the factory Truck Arm pads). Other than those 3 items the rest is straight forward bolt together installation.

Slowly getting to the rear suspension. The Torque Arm will work as is, with slight modification to the cab. The link arms will need to be shortened. We're not going to use this 12 bolt but it already has the bracketry so it helps with mock up. The problem is the 12 bolt is roughly 1/2" shorter at the pumpkin than a 9" so I have to account for that.

From this angle you can see that the axle bracket hangs to far behind the axle. We need to bring the flange area closer to the back of the axle tube to gain clearance for the panhard bar.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/04/02/20180322_132928.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/ZXdI3)

I've hinted at the idea that there won't be much room under the hood. The radiator is roughed in. It's likely too wide, since at current placement the tire will actually interfere at full lock. Once the inner panels are constructed there really won't be much room at all. The cardboard box is a rough intercooler size. Dual inlets, one on each top/side, with a center outlet on the bottom that goes under the radiator. Radiator fan outlets will be routed out of the hood.

I feel so scatter brained lately. I seem to be jumping from project to project. I started removing the drip rails and then ran into a little problem. So I moved back to finish welding the bed.

I had planned on doing the drip rail removal a small section at a time. This helps keep the roof structure from distorting. I worked the door areas first and all went pretty easily. Unfortunately, when I cut the front section I realized real quick that the roof skin doesn't line up with the windshield surround. Basicaly, the roof skin overhangs the windshield surround by roughly 3/16". So I went ahead and cut that whole front portion of the drip rail off. I now plan to do a small pie cut on the sides and will lay the roof skin down a little at the front to smooth out the 3/16" difference.

We've been working on rear suspension mock up. The 12 bolt display rearend we had was too wide so we built a mock rearend that is 55" wide housing flange to housing flange and 60" wide axle flange to axle flange. We also had to cut some special axle brackets(similar to our Muscle Car Torque Amr brackets) with a 25 degree angle.

Did you steal the boss's wheels lol? Yessum! I debated between these and Reddawn's wheels but went with the easy route since two were already removed. I prefer the look and size of Ef's HRE's but they wouldn't clear the Wilwood hubs up front.

I haven't made much progress lately on the truck because I broke my ankle back in June. Just been planning the layout of all the under bed items. In order to do that I needed the bed in place.

I've been kinda stalled on the rear diffuser design. My brother (the artistic one in the family) was in the area the other day so I had him take a look at it. I think he's come up with an idea that will look good and function well at 150+mph.

Cut up the factory longbed sides.

Time for the monthly update.

The first few pieces of this was accomplished with Tig because the Mig machine was being used by Ed on Ray Currie's F100. Needless to say I am no sheet metal guru and the Tig added a level of complication due to awkward positioning.

Before, just a big gaping hole.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/10/18/20181002_105251.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/O5ATR)

I skipped a couple pics during this 4 step process. one flat panel, and 3 strip pieces to cover the frame crossover tube.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/10/18/20181004_123712.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/O5t5p)

Making room for the driveshaft. This part was a little more involved than the previous steps. Plasma cut the back of the floor out but there is a cross brace underneath. I had to put myself in the path of the plasma overspray to get to a couple areas.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/10/18/20181008_120854.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/O5juY)

I had considered adding an access panel here for Torque Arm adjustments. Changed my mind once I realized that once the interior and seats were in there it would be a pita anyway.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/10/18/20181008_142841.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/O5n7o)

This piece had the same curvature as the previous panel. There's more than enough room for even a 4" driveshaft.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/10/18/20181010_093631.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/O5fz7)

Again, skipped a couple pics here. These two pieces had a little bit of angle so it took a few trial and error fitments to get it right.

Skipped a couple pics again. Now that there is some strength back in the floor I removed the cross floor bracing. Now I'm on the lookout for a van engine cover. Likely going to be an Astro Van. Plan to cut the sheet metal around the whole thing and then graft it to the C10.

So project #Ctwin is gaining some junkyard parts. After a bunch of measuring and online dimension searching I headed to the Ontario Pick-A-Part with reciprocating saw in hand.

There are 3 variants of the Astro Van engine cover. Early, mid & late. I chose the mid year because of it's larger opening and thick construction.

There were a bunch of vans to choose from. Luckily I found a very clean example and began cutting it up.

Doing a little prelim fitment check. It's pretty darn close as is. The under side of the dash will need to be raised slightly. That will allow the engine cover to move forward against what will eventually be a new firewall. There will be some serious consideration here for dash design. The cover must be able to be removed easily. Which will be no easy task once there are seats in place. Initial thoughts include designing a hinged center to the dash that lifts up and away. Another thought is to have two separate dashes (driver/passenger) and then have a removable center console that mates up against the dash/engine cover that is also easily removable.

I am not ready to close out the firewall yet. I've got a plan for up there but I need to mount Ed's wheels again and cycle the steering at full compression. I'm looking to gain some forward foot space without encroaching on tire clearance.

I mentioned that the Holley High-Ram won't clear. We ended up changing to the Sniper Race Series. The only problem there is the inlet is 90mm. So I spent some time opening it up to 102 to match the throttle body.

I have every excuse in the world as to why this thing is taking so long. Lack of motivation isn't one of them. I am really trying to stick with one small project at a time. The biggest hurdle as of late has been the firewall. I wanted to remove the rain gutter and make a solid flat panel. I also wanted to change the angle of the toe boards at the same time. This was kind of an afterthought from mocking up a driver's seat and realizing the forward footwell space was limited. The problem of course is making sure there is plenty of tire clearance. My major hold up has been deciding the tire overall diameter. I finally just put a limit of 28" and moved forward.

Paper cutouts of the new firewall pieces. In order to make working with them easier I kept them in two pieces.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190416_163242.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/haK64)

Initial mock up. Lots of trimming and fitting. I left a little extra because I figured after bead rolling it would shrink/warp in some areas.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190418_124613.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/haruS)

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190418_124627.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/haMe5)

Made a pretty simple design for the bead roll.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190419_125355.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/hWK6Z)

& spent some time at lunch today rolling some beads. This was my first time using one so I took a bunch of practice swipes with some spare pieces. The plan is to drill some holes about 1.5" in from the perimeter for rosette welds. The toe boards will just be bent up into place and welded/trimmed.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190422_130158.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/hqQiH)

Here is a side view of the toe boards. IMO the old toe board angle is where the pedals should have been from the factory. With the new floor angle that shouldn't be a problem.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190418_124726.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/haFzZ)

Our buddy Andy 'The Nova Guy' Mule found a LS7 oil pan & pump at the Pleasanton Goodguys. I hadn't planned on going dry sump for cost reasons but I couldn't pass this up knowing that Ed has a spare oil tank.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190330_172708.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/haw0T)

Since the beginning we had plans to run a Dakota Digital dash. I just kept hesitating because we also have a Holley dash. Once I realized that the Dakota harness is a pass thru and that I could stash the Holley somewhere else I pulled the trigger.

HDX-2200 will work out well in a universal situation. I also nabbed two 2000psi pressure sensors so we can monitor front/rear brake pressure and adjust accordingly via a prop valve mounted near the driver. We will also run twin widebands as well.

A little progress on the firewall. Also made some tabs for the tranny crossmember so it will unbolt and drop out from the bottom. Turns out the 4L80 I used for mock up had a different (more shallow) pan on it. The current pan hangs about .5" lower which means the engine had to go forward and up. Will be making the engine crossmember next.

No updates worth posting pics of. Mounted the gas tank such that the upward taper imaginary line would match the roll pan(for diffuser purposes). Started wiring up the Ridetech ProX, ordered the Intro wheels, & began making new steering arms to work with those badass Billet Wilwood spindles. Ok, maybe I do need to post some pics after all.

Made dual battery trays, mounted the Derale tranny cooler, mounted both compressors & tanks. Wired up the Ridetech Pro-X controller so we could cycle the truck at the Brothers Show this past weekend.

This is Fred, he does all of our brake & air lines on our chassis. He's routing the 1/4" lines from the distribution block to the tanks.

After the Brothers Truck show we dropped the truck off at Doug's Headers. They built us some easily removable 1.75" primary, mid length headers and 2.5" mid pipes for it. We kept the tubing smaller for better velocity.

We just started mocking up the Magnaflow 3.5" I/D mufflers yesterday. They will be tight up against the Derale coolers so we'll build a small heat shield there.

We also began mocking up the Wilwood tandem brake pedal assy. I wanted the pedal as high as possible so we could get the most ratio possible. As it sits we're at about 9:1. The dash will make servicing the master interesting. Will likely make the dash top pin on for easy removal. I'm still not sure what the gas pedal will look like and whether it will be pull or push yet. The throttle body will be rotated 180 degrees from normal so the cable can go right down the valley. The problem is that the valley is behind the pedal. So the cable will have to go back and around the Astrovan cover and up into the valley.

We've had a few different sets of wheels on the truck to get it around the shop. These are some that we borrowed from Schott for another display chassis. They're 18's & 20's with way too tall of a tire so it doesn't lay frame with them.

Not really an update so much as a video version of the pics above.

Is there a version of this "chart" with the shock mounts that are on the normal kit ?

Ed was working on shock placement while Sal and I were at SEMA. Here is what he came up with. This is basically our original upper shock mount raised another 7/16". She's going to be loooooooooooooooooooowwwwww.

Our standard shock mount would add roughly 5/8" to the dimensions above in the right column. The standard front end can go really low, so much so that we're currently in development of a raised spindle. All of the info on this chart has changed since then. The truck now has 5.1 travel shocks on it and an even taller upper mount. We have a couple different versions of the upper mount right now but will likely have another as we develop a full chassis based on this truck and a stepped rail.

I assume the stepped rail chassis will require the bed floor to be raised?

Yes, the bed was raised 6" on ctwin. Not sure yet if that's where we'll end up on the production piece though. There is a possibility of an IRS that will allow us to retain the stock frame rail profile and yet still go real low.

Is this project stalled? So much custom, I need more build!!

I have taken Rob MacGregor's advice and began simplifying the build to just get it out there. The truck isn't gaining any marketing exposure collecting dust. We ditched the turbos (luckily the shortblock isn't built yet), 4L80, and sleeve portion of the airbags (keeping the Ridetech triples of course). I am also going to back down off the ledge of chopping the roof and a few other body mods.

Next on the agenda is to get our new Pro-Touring chassis underneath the truck. Don't worry, the engine set back will remain since there's no going back on the cab now.

So technically, the truck needs a new name since "Ctwin" doesn't work anymore.

New plan consists of going with a more off the shelf approach: "Keeping it simple"
New TCI Pro-Touring chassis
TKX 5 speed
Build the 416" but with more compression & cam than previously planned
Put coil springs on the Ridetech Triples we already have
Maybe add some lightweight body components up front

HAHA, and you've gone and made me log in for the first time in forever.

I tried to finish the truck in my spare time but just felt overwhelmed with the process. George Reiss from Reiss Racing bought the truck from Ed and will complete it with the turbos and hopefully our new Pro-Touring Chassis. Last time I saw the truck it was in primer. A long way to go still but but at least it's in capable hands.
