Hey PT,

Starting a PT/Restomod build of my 1968 Mustang FB that I have owned since 1998. I had just finished grade 10 and wanted a muscle car and we had a line on one down in Bakersfield. So my dad, two uncles, 1 cousin my brother and I piled into a crammed F150 Crewcab and started the long drive from Abbotsford to Bakersfield (Abbotsford is 50min east of Vancouver BC). This was not a easy road trip, coming into California the transmission in the truck decided to grenade itself and left us stranded in Yreka CA during a US long weekend. I think that stop alone cost double what I paid for the car! $4500 for the transmission and $100 for the hotel and back on our way. We made a pit stop in Salinas and us kids stayed with family while my dad and uncles drove non-stop to Bakersfield. I remember seeing the car for the first time, as exited as I was all I could think was "That's it?"

The car was in primer and the previous owner began restoring it, the inside of the car was stuffed full of parts and boxes. It was complete and rust free. I think it had been parked since the early/mid 80's indoors.

Back in those days my parents owned an autobody shop, when it got slow it was a side project for everyone to spend some time and get it ready for paint. Back then a straight forward restoration was planned, keep the 302 and C4 paint it the factory red and call it a day. In 2000 my parents sold the business and the car never got painted (Thank god, red would have been a bad idea) and it moved into storage. I was still into Mustangs at the time and I remember racing at the local 1/4 mile track and getting spanked by a 91 Civic. I was running 14.0 and he was deep into the 13's. I thought it was the weirdest/coolest thing, I never knew Honda's could do that haha. I quickly jumped ship from domestics to Honda's and entrenched myself in the import world.

I took a restomod approach to Honda's, simple oem clean look on the outside and spent all the money on the driveline and suspension. We had some of the fastest imports in the area. At this time the 68 wasn't even a blimp on the radar. I didn't want anything to do with it and toyed with selling it many times over the years.

From about 2006-2010 I didn't work or build any cars, I was too busy with life and was tired of breaking parts racing and driving uncomfortable cars. I traded my Subaru WRX for a 97 Civic and got the bug to build. I spent almost a year building the civic into a really cool car with rare jdm parts and super fun to drive. Looking back I would say it would have been a perfect PT car of the Japanese world.

It lasted 5 months, the battery took a dump and fried the electrical and the part out began. I planned on selling it off and selling the mustang to get money for a down payment on a house and my girlfriend/fiancé refused to let me sell my mustang, the civic she couldn't care less haha. She knew deep down I would be kicking myself for selling it and never be able to find a replacement. September 2012 the dust was blown off, garage kind of semi sorted and in order, I put in an order for a bunch of parts and started tearing the 68 apart.

My fiancé gave me a deadline, August 2015 to have it done in time for our wedding....You heard it hear PT, she gave me a deadline to have it running with a really relaxed budget that in the year since I started working on it she has only asked once about how much I have spent!

Decided that my welding of the patch panels for the shock towers was more or less horrible haha, so the decision was made to replace the rad support and get some MTF engine bay panels.

Awesome.... I am planning on using the R&C 4 Link in the rear of my Mach. Any idea if you'll be able to run exhaust out the back? The guys at R&C I spoke to said if I run it now, I should be able to once the 4 link is in, but no guarantees...

It will be a tight fit but it can be done. Here is a link I found with the same discussion http://forums.vintage-mustang.com/mod-custom-forum/623313-any-pics-your-exhaust-coil-over-rear-suspension.html

Been wiring like crazy, I would like to take the time and give a huge thank you and shout out to SJAROSLO aka Steve. The AAW is in and 90% complete. All thats left to wire is windows, alarm, EFI, stereo.

I've decided to run double batteries in the trunk, Kinetik HC600's for their small foot print. I'm not putting in a big stereo, simple 4ch amp with some 6.5" and 6x9's. For the price can't beat the Kinetik's.

Last night I ordered a bunch of stereo/amp wiring and connections, distribution blocks etc.

With the AAW harness and a Mini Starter (built in solenoid, works like the Ford fender mounted unit) should I still run a Ford style ignition solenoid in the trunk or under the dash? Trying to avoid a mess of wires.

Here's some new pictures. I was a roll once it came back from paint and then wedding season hit and it's been over a month, since then I haven't touched it.

Started with the dash and bits. It has to come back out to put the windshield in nicely.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/bloggerimage681644133-1.jpg

Dakota Digital gauges, Ididit column, Nardi wood steering wheel.

In retrospect I wouldn't have bought a Ididit or Flaming River branded column. My friend got a no name one from Ebay and the quality/finish was the same for a fraction of the price.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/bloggerimage1546930155-1.jpg

New brake lines under the dash for clutch switch and brake lights. Going to keep it really clean under the hood. (don't mind the welding on the pedal brace, my left hand did it)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/bloggerimage471024395-1.jpg

Time for the AAW install, I'm not the best when it comes to circuits so I appreciate all the help that everyone has given with various questions in the tech forums.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/bloggerimage694453098-1.jpg

Wiring covered in tech flex, zap straps are temporary I wrapped all braches with electrical tape.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/bloggerimage860486121-1.jpg

Running all the wiring for the front of the car on the outside, again keeping it clean under the hood. I used magdaddy magnets to secure the wiring to the aprons. I got some 12lb and 20lb magnets to keep things in place.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/bloggerimage1808076660-1.jpg

Stripping and wiring of the new/used dual fans out of a V6 Cougar. My friend made all the mounts to bolt on to the rad and a/c condenser as one unit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/bloggerimage1466135478-1.jpg

The only brake lines you will see under the hood

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/bloggerimage1077715278-1.jpg

Close up

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/bloggerimage1321090202-1.jpg

That's all the pictures for now.

I started to order some new interior pieces and got my new TMI one piece headliner and visors. I started building my brackets for the Recaro's with sliders.

Lots of wiring to be done, I finished up the passenger side for the lights and signals. I wrapped up most of the Vintage Air wiring. Just need to run a power source to the front for the fans.

Awesom build! Have a few questions. I too am putting wildwood pedals in my car and I am curious as to what exactly the "New brake lines under the dash for clutch switch and brake lights" whats a clutch switch? I got the wildwood prop valve with build in brake light switch for my car and my master cylinders will be behind the dash to clean up the firewall. But im really curious to what that clutch switch is and where your brake lines go. If you have pics that's even better!

The lines under the dash are for the Neutral safety switch and brake lights. Just put them on pressure switches.

The rest of the lines are for the front brakes. They run inside the car to the wheel well so no lines under the hood.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. After taking an extended break I have begun to work on the car again. Putting the doors together with power locks and power windows. Unfortunately I discovered the lower hinges on both doors are worn out, time to rebuild those.

Mocked up a center console out of cardboard and will have a friend of mine build at his shop.

Toying with the idea of moving the motor back a couple inches in the engine bay, previously when I had it mocked up the rad/fan setup was really close to the water pump pulley but the motor was sitting at a bad angle.

I only have 9 months till the wedding so I'm shooting to have her done in the spring!

Some updates on the car, slowly making good progress on the car. Had a setback with the Dakota Digital ecu cooking itself. Aside from minor wiring issues its coming along as planned. Here are some pictures:

Mounted on a sheet of titanium :)

Haha the car was there first for sure. She's all for it, let me spend what I wanted too on parts and doesn't say a word when I work on it. Personally I think I'm done working on it, I went hard for nearly 3 years and kinda burnt out. Hence why selling it to fund a new project. This car still needs to be finished off but all the parts are there, just needs someone who wants to do the last 5%.

Finish it off. You've had it since 1998. I think you will regret selling the car but that's just my 0.02.

If you're "Burnt Out" on this one, how is another one going to be any different? If you only have 5% left, finish it... Then if you decide to Sell...Well...Still DON'T..

I'm with the others. There is a lot of history with this car. Don't sell it or you will regret it your entire life. Take it from someone who's been there. Projects, no matter how close to finished NEVER sell for what a finished car will. My advice is to finish it and wait a minimum of 6 months after it's complete to decide if you want to sell it or not. If you do decide to sell it then you can get a much better price for it as it's complete and the ''bug's'' are worked out of it.

Great project and good luck with your decision.

Wives will come and wives will go, but the relationship of a car is forever...

Some tell me my priorities are screwed up.

But how many of us are married to the same woman we were 20 years ago?

Things get tough sometimes. Alteast finish the car, give it a couple of month's of work and then make up your mind.

we just celebrated 20 years this past February. a good wife is valuable.

I don't really regret getting rid of any of my cars; sold my 2nd car, 70 Nova that my parents bought new. my brother had it first, then me. whenever I get nostalgic about it, I just remind myself how much it cost, all the headaches and stress, and how much work it still needed. then I don't miss it anymore.
got rid of a 78 malibu, factory 3 speed stick! bodywork was all complete, solid car, needed everything else. don't miss it.

we get emotional about cars, but really, it's just another machine.

You guys are awesome haha!

My issue with it is I did spend too much time and money on it. It's kinda too nice for me to drive. I want to build a beater with some decent parts and cruise in.

The wife is pushing me too keep it, and if I did sell she would support the next project.

I will take some time and bring it over to my place. See how I feel in the new year. I did put up for sale locally just to gauge some interest. (with an outrageous price).

Anyone got anything to trade haha

That reminds of something Tim Strange said at the GoodGuys AutoX event in Texas a few weeks ago. A Builder from Washington State brought out a Nova II that is gonna be up for Street Car of The Year and thrashed it on the Autocross course. Tim said something like... If you think you have TOO nice of a Car to Drive and Beat on, come take a look at this Nova... You're building it to Drive...Right?? So DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT.... I don't drive my Mach as much as I used to, well it used to be my Daily Driver, but I have recently started driving it as much as I can...I love it and the Reaction from Folks when they see me driving is Great too...

Thanks, not sure what you mean. Are you asking how much I spent on it?

Minor update:

I sold the fast ez efi and intake manifold, bought another Edelbrock intake and a Fitech setup to make it all go vroom. Bigger battery and rewiring the charging system. I also bought all new Deutsch connectors for the harness and misc plugs.

Hopefully this will get the car running, a close friend of mine just opened his own shop and has been a great motivator in getting me thinking about the car again

yes how much did you spend on parts? and paint job? I would like to build a high end 69-70 429 crate engine custom wide body Mustang and pondering over cost. most shops I asked would want over 100k plus the donor car, charge around $80 an hour, I can't afford that so would have to build it myself. perhaps find some people to help me with my project and I will help with theirs in return. I think maybe 5 years and 50k budget sounds realistic.

Off the top of my head without the cost of the car I've spent around $55k cdn. I bought 99% of my parts down in the US and brought them up myself.

Paint and body was another 10k. I have a good friend who runs an autobody shop so they cut me a great deal and lifetime warranty on the paint.

How clean of a shell you find will dictate your overall budget, sometimes cutting up a clean car (more money upfront) will help in the long run, than dealing with something with a lot of rust. I know sheetmetal is available, but how much time and money your going to spend before you get to modify is the question.

sounds like its all a great deal and you did most of the work yourself. how much more time and money would you have to spend to complete? and if you do you should rip around and show it off then if you must sell.

Everything was done at home aside from paint and body. I estimate another $5k Cdn (High side) to finish it off. It needs exhaust, all the chrome bits finished in black, and misc paint touch ups from sitting.

I toyed with selling it but I want to get it done and enjoy it. Now if someone offered something out of this world for it...then I would have to think about it.

yah u should keep it as long as u can. One should only go to the pawn broker as a last resort if u really need the cash, they give u a quarter or a third of what u paid for it. Finished pro touring or resto mod mustangs are advertised on the high end on ebay. for some reason they seem to be generally more expensive than Camaro's maybe because they made way more Camaro's than mustangs back in the day or its just what the market demands. Also I noticed that classic Mustangs are very rare, scarcely come up for sale in Canada therefore cost more than if you were to buy one from the states.

did you ever think of opening your own shop? that's what I would like to do, get a group of talented guys and start or buy a pro touring/ custom/restoration shop.
