We are curently building my 14 yearold son his second c-10 truck. The first was a bagged 66 c10 that landed him a spot on Power Block and several magazine spots. It was a old school ride and he decided he wanted something a little more"sporty". We found him a little c-10 wiith a 67-68 front clip and started to do another bagged ride on big wheels. The project shifted gears and is shaping up into more of a Pro Touring ride.
For parts so far we have wilwood front and rear brakes,CPP spindles,Porterbuilt front and rear suspension,20x8.5 front wheels and 22x9.5 rears,L92 engine from a denali,Th350 trans with a maunal reverse valvebody.I plan on ordering coilovers from Ridetech next week.
Porterbuilt has worked with us to get a 5.5 inch rideheight to the frame @front of the cab and a narrow enough track width up front to turn.

A few pics.

Thanks guys .
I think it will make the kid a good truck. Personally I am a truck guy and I hope he keeps this one but there has been a lot of talk about a split bumper camaro hopefully after he drives the truck that will stop.
The suspension kit was designed to run a 2 piece driveshaft and I did not really want to do that.Over the weekend I cut the tubular trailing arm x-member and floor, added a driveshaft loop to the top of the x-member and a raised tunnel. Now we can run a 3 inch one piece driveshaft.
We ordered the rest of the bed parts today so I can get it all squared up and get the wheel tubs and bed floor fabbed up. Its coming together nice so far.
I am really on the ropes about fuel delivery,I really like carburetors but I know fuel injection would be the up to date way to do it just a giant learning curve for me.

I talked with Patrick @ Pro Systems today for a while about getting a carb built.
He seems very confident that he can build a unit that will be very streetable and do great if we want to hit some corners and stop hard. I was also super impressed with the cost,he will build the carb setup for what we are going to do with the truck for a little under 700.00.
So carb intake and ing. control will come in under 1500.00 if that is the way we decide to go.

I have my next dilemma. After reworking the front frame horns last night to move the swaybar up for clearance and just to make it easier To get a jack under the x-member I started looking at the bed.I know I have to get a swaybar, fuel cell, fuel pump etc.... back there. My question is do I sheetmetal the bed and tubs or just leave it open and run a bed cover of some sort. If a cover what brand?I am just not sure what to do.

raise the whole bed floor up to clear the frame kick, then you'll have lots of room under the floor.

Thats the way we did the last truck and for sure would work on this one.
Today I went ahead and bobbed the front frame rails off to clear the rollpan. I also finished welded where I raised the bottom of the front frame rails up.Then I mounted the sway bar, made endlinks, and added a little tubing to brace off the frame in that area. While I was doing all that I realized just how much frame flex this thing has,I am not sure what but something has to be done to help with that.

I did a lot of reading last night,I am not all the way finished but did get a good start. I was able to get the truck up on the lift early this morning and I am going to start with the u-channel in the straight section of the frame. I measured it up and the local metal shop will have it bent and to me tomorrow. Then I will get a good X under there. After that I will work my way towards the ends.
I kind of want to cage the truck,I know its a street truck but it is going to be a 500+HP street truck with a 16 year old behind the wheel.Other than the safety aspect will it benefit in the handling department? I am sure the monster wheels are going to hurt us enough and anything we can gain has to help.
Rob I really would like to thank you for your input, says a lot for a guy IMHO when a manufacturer does not mind helping out someone who is running a competitors product.I can honestly say I knew nothing about your company going into this build and maybe we can use your parts on the next one.

No Problem. Nate makes some good stuff. OK, I'm not tryind to jack the thread, just thought I would post these for you with a few tips. These are from a kit we have for earlier trucks, 47-59 chevs and 48-60 effies. Remember that triangles are way stronger than squares. The rail inserts (boxing) only helps a little. It's the triangulation that stiffens things up. I have done similar to this for C10's, a few differences, like exhaust ports (the earier trucks have 4" of space below the chassis to be even with the rocker or running board) and the trailing arm mounts - if used. On this kit, the trans mount bolts to the front X rails. Also, we tie the front and rear suspension sections to the center. Make sure that the chassis is square and level before you start. Keep posting picts, we all want to see more.

Nate and his crew seem to be a great group of guys and have went way out of there way to help work out son bugs that I have run into. I can speek nothing but good words about them.
Thanks for the pics. I will have to get some pics of what I have done this week up over the next day or two. The center of the frame is boxed,I did a tube X in inbetween that and was able to get the tras crossmember in. Over the weekend I hope to get the new front shock hats in,the first ones did not allow for a long enough front shock so Nate made them a inch taller.Trying to go this low on coilovers with this big of a tire is a pain. i really wish i would have went with a smalle/wider wheel.

It has been a very busy week at the shop so I did not get much done on our truck.
I raised the frame in the front a couple of weeks ago for the sway bar, started fitting the wheel tubs, and a few other things.

I am curious what folks are doing for drive shafts? I have been stuck on running a 1 piece but i am learning that may be a problem. A one piece 3 inch diameter shaft would be a really nice fit,but the fact that It will need to be about 58 inches of tube creates a issue I am told. A 3.5 inch shaft will clear but I would not have much side to side clearance on my drive shaft loop. I could rework it to get about .75 clearance side to side and I have plenty of clearance up and down. Would that be enough?

The question I asked myself when starting this build was the exact opposite of your question for me. I started to build a 4l70e and was like why does the truck need a overdrive.
I worked in a transmission shop for a couple of years and got to see a gauntlet of transmissions come in and go out the door. The GM overdrive units with the exception of the 4L80e just did not seem to hold up to a ton of abuse. When I bought my Trailblazer SS I pulled the 4l70e out at about 10,000 miles packed it with all the good parts and torque convertor hoping not to brake it as we built more power and at about 40,000 it still let go. I have had good luck with 3 speeds heck the one i am using for the truck lasted 3 years in my drag car making about 800hp. The only reason I pulled it out was to swap to a glide.
With the 3 speed,a 3.73 gear, and the tall back tire @ 70mph will be around 2900RPM which does not bother me any at all on the hwy.

The boy and I just finished up getting the front coilovers mounted up. I have a few small clearance issues with the shock and the lower A arm but thats going to be a simple fix. In the rear i am going to move the upper mounts around a little and they will be on. This is a giant step forward with this project,Its the first time it has had actual suspension since we bought the truck. Lol........
My next big hurdle is going to be the driveshaft. I am no driveshaft expert but after owning my 62 impala I swore I would never run another 2 piece shaft as long as I live. That may soon change. I did raise the tunnel of the truck up to run a 3 inch one piece shaft but after talking with several experts in the art of driveshafts I now know that will not work. There is this thing called critical speed that I knew nothing about. I could clear a 3.5 shaft but they say that will not work either.
So my options are a 2 piece shaft,a 3.25 inch carbon unit,or cut the tunnel and trailing arm x-member again and make room for a 4 inch shaft. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks guys . I hope building this as a project with my son will make him appreciate what he has more than if we could just afford to go out and buy him one. With not having that kind of money to do that he is getting to learn just how much work goes into building and how much work it is to save the money to buy parts. Maybe it will all sink in.

I am trying to make this rig pull hard out of a corner and be very driver friendly engine wise.
The cam we went with is going to be making killer torque by 2200 and I will probably run about 2800 worth of convertor. I am looking at intakes now and the GM dual plane looks like the best bet. It would be about 50 bucks cheaper to run the GM single plane and 100 bucks cheaper to run the victor jr. , but I am scared the loss in torque below 4000 will make it a dog. Anyone have any experience with the different intakes. I am also thinking that maybe down the road I could stick a TB setup on it like the terminator or such.

I have the Performer dual plane intake on mine with a mildly rowdy cam, 700R4 with 2800 stall, and 4.11 gears. Torque is instant, and driveability is great. It's still mild enough to drive in any condition without getting too squirrelly, but power is still available at any given rpm level. Top end power seems to slack off, but mainly at high speeds. This may be a fuel delivery issue in my case, though. It works fine in first and second gear all the way to 6500+ but seems to get wheezy in third and fourth gears at speeds greater than 80. This also may be due to carb and timing tuning or a few mismatched parts. I've considered going with a single plane, but I'm not sure if it would really help that much.

BTW, cool project! Looking forward to seeing it come together.

Our next round of parts showed up today. The Intake, ignition and oil pan arrived from Pace. Another week of work and i will get the carb coming from prosystems and the aeromotive fuel system on the way. A buddy is going to drop a set of headers off in the morning if they fit I can start fab work on the exhaust.

My buddy dropped the headers and they do fit but they are little tube midlength headers. I do not like them much. The header that Porterbuilt recommends are the same way also. I have looked high and low for something to run and without dumping a grand on something that may not fit I am a little stuck. Judging by pictures I thing the 2010-2013 Kooks headers will fit but what a big gamble.

We stabbed the motor and trans back in the truck over the weekend. I had planned to run a prosystems carb but this QFT carb popped up really cheap so we are going to give it a try. I do believe I am going to build the fuel system to carry a Throttle body so If I decide to go that route later we will just need to change the regulator. PTC hooked us up with a tight 10 inch convertor,so After a fuel system and cooling system we can beat on the truck for a couple of weeks around the shop to work any major bugs out before we blow it apart for paint.

Our truck is coming along slowly but surely!!!!
The Griffin radiator is in and hoses on. We stuck a hose in a gas can the other night and fired the motor for the first time now its time to decide on what to buy to permanently supply fuel. There are lots of options but only a couple I like. I am torn between going with a Fuel safe cell or the Aeromtive stealth cell with the 340 pump and a low pressure return fuel regulator.I just do not know which way to go.the truck is no race car but with my son driving it I do want it safe and reliable. Both companies have options that I can make fit and both are comparable in price.
And who knows a year from now I could see the big wheels comming off a set of smaller wheels with sticky tires going on and new coilover mounts to get it up in the air for some auto cross fun.Hell we are going to try it with the big wheels.
Any opinions guys?

Well the truck starts and runs now and if I had a fuel system and seats it would stop.
This weekend we bent brake lines and got the system up and working, installed a big trans cooler and plumbed it,welded up some exhaust with a set of same side offset 11x9x4 magnaflow mufflers and turn downs for now, made the battery cables from the rear to the front, pulled a couple of wires to the ignition switch and fired the motor up and topped off the trans. While we were at it we stuck it in the paint booth and gave the outside a coat of epoxy primer. I am not going to do any body or paint work until all the bugs are worked out of the truck and had to do something to keep it from rusting.

But just in case I scratched wired headlights, taillights and brake lights. Still need seat belts and rubber for the glass. Now I know my truck is nothing special but I was very happy with how it worked last weekend @ the goodguys columbus event. It was no where close to the times posted by Chris Smith or Bob in his super nice Orange Rush C-10 but with those guys being in pro gave me the opportunity to take first place in the truck class.!!!! The new set of BFG tires we mounted on the front was a night and day difference over the nitto 420s tires I was running and for the first time I had to worry about rear traction in the corners instead of front. Had to keep the front stiff and front tire pressure up to balance out the truck.
Now The truck is in the pro class and I know with the current setup we will for sure be the slowest pro class entry. It will still be fun and hopefully things will work out for some new wheels and tires and a few other parts like seats and shocks. Even though I love our current bench seat. Lol!!

I have a cheap set of 20x10 wheels to toss on the back of our truck so i can get rid of the 22 inch wheels and nitto SUV tires for Holley LS Fest.
My tire options for the back with the 10 inch wheel seem to be.
285/35/20 BFG Rival
305/35/20 Hankook RS3
305/35/20 Goodyear F1 G2
Which of these tires are going to be my best bet? I would think any of them would be better than my current setup but I also know that the shorter tire is going to change the gear a pretty good bit wich may get interesting.

Made a cheap wheel and tire swap today. 20x10's with a 5.5 B.S. all the way around with a 305/35 rear and I have a set of 285/35 on the way for the front.

I have been looking at the truck and trying to decide ways to shift some weight. The radiator empty is about 22 lbs. So I could move it to the rear, lighten the core support up and then cut the frame off in front of the cross member and replace it with a piece of 1.75 tubing to hold the front of the body up. I am also about to put a little cage in it which will not help with bias but make me feel better..!!!!!! Would these changes be worth the trouble? I know I will be adding weight with the plumbing and extra water capacity but through the length of the truck.
I would also like to raise the front of the truck up a inch and then drop down to 18 inch front wheels but that will cause all sorts of clearence issues with the spindles and control arms.

Really like the build, but Im Curious as to why you made the engine cage and bed cage bolt onto the cab instead of running all the tubes into the cab welding them making the cage 1 piece versus 3

How often are you removing the cab?

Once to paint it is enough for me. We use plates and roll carge couplers all the timr in off road rigs all the time and have had no failures so they should work fine on this truck. If it was a all out race car and I had the extra funds to have the fram and inside the cab powdercoated then I may have done it different. When I paint a street car it gets painted inside and out. And I did not care to try to paint the top of the frame and bottom of the floors with it together. And now if the kid wrecks it on the way to school and can easily swap out a section and repaint it without doing the whole truck. Or if he decides he wants a non chopped cab in a year we just have to work the cab and replace the one we have.

Not a 60's car,its a 1952 Austin Sumerset. It belongs to my boss I will get some pics of it. I think it looks like a bunch of clowns are going to jump out of it at any second lol but a lot of peole like it. We are putting a straight axle under it and a Rover all alluminum enging in it . I gues you could say its going to be a little english gasser.
