Goodguys 2015 Giveaway C10 by Scott's Hotrods

Scott's Hotrods is pleased to announce the official build for the Goodguys 2015 giveaway C-10.

We have had a great relationship with Goodguys over the last 15 years. We have had the opportunity to build a handful of giveaway cars in the past, but unfortunately the timing was never quite right to do one for Goodguys. I'm very excited that we are doing this one. Great truck, and great timing.

We are determined to make this the best C-10 we've built to date.

Goodguys has already done a lot of the hard work in determining the look, having the rendering done, and aquiring a lot of the hard parts. Our job will be to execute the plan and rebuild this truck form top to bottom. There is not a piece or panel on this truck that will go untouched.

We started on the tear down and quickly realized that this cab was in fairly poor shape. Lots of hidden rust that needed to be addressed before we could get started. Rather than have it dipped (we've had bad luck with that) we sent it out to be media blasted. Our shop lead Brycen has taken the reigns on this project.

Great body work! What are you using to grind the welds? I have some hours in in body repair, but I've never got it THAT nice after grinding... I must be using the wrong tools.

TIG welder, grinder, and a DA. It's not so much how it's welded, as how it's prepped, fitted, and finished. You can achieve similar results with a MIG welder. It also helps having guys as talented as they are doing the work. (while I type about it in the office, LOL)

Justin decided he wanted a cool detail to run the perimeter of the engine bay, so he came up with this belt-line. It will run along the inner fender wells as well as the core support cover.

Here you can see where the kick panel is moved forward 5 inches. This really makes a difference with leg room.

Chassis was finished up this week. Finally got around to setting it on.

The Goodguys trailer mandated that the overall height on the truck be no taller than 57". Right now we are sitting at 57.5" Once we chop the truck it will put us right where it needs to be.

Awesome build I bought some wilwood parts from you guys great service and you guys build some killer rides... Please take the slotted wheels off the suburban and put them on this truck since the suburban dont look like it has progressed in awhile..

Thanks for the business! The wheels stay on the 'Burb though, it's the bosses. Unfortunately we've been too slammed with customer jobs to work on it the last year. Well, I guess I should say fortunately we have been too slammed. This truck though, already has wheels sitting here ready to go on it. You'll like them once you see them on. It fits really well with the build.

TIG welder, grinder, and a DA. It's not so much how it's welded, as how it's prepped, fitted, and finished. You can achieve similar results with a MIG welder.
I mostly use 120 grit paper on a angle grinder, but eventhough my body prep looks OK, it's far away from what's shown here!
It's probably easy solution - I don't have the same experience and I lack patience...


It also helps having guys as talented as they are doing the work. (while I type about it in the office, LOL) Lol! You nailed it - I don't have any talented staff. ;)

Being slammed with bussiness is good justin took good care of me.... I do have a question about moving the lower kick panel forward as more leg room in these trucks is needed. But how close are your wheels at full lock to the firewall now? Did you guys move the wheelbase forward to compensate for this?

The front wheel base was moved forward and there is plenty of tire clearence and full compression and when the tire is turned lock to lock

A good rule of thumb is let it cool as much as you weld. However, on long straight pieces, the cooling time will usually be double that.

Right now the guys are setting up the ground clearance. The rockers are being trimmed and remade, ad the rear of the cab is being redone too.

You can see just how much we are taking out of the rocker. Seems like a lot, but it'll really not be noticeable when it's all finished.

The body will sit level with the frame when it's finished. All said and done, it will give us our 4" of ground clearance that we need.

Here's a better view of the rocker. It'll be finished with a sheet metal cap and shaped correctly.

Here's a quick look at it before it's finished. You can see how the rear window stays full size, and how the windshield is leaned back. Like Justin said, the dash isn't affected so long as the pillars are relieved correctly.

In total, the windshield is laid back 2-3/4" and the total chop is 1-3/4". In the earlier pictures the windshield wasn't fully laid back yet. Here's the final height.

Once the welding and cutting started to happen, it was apparent that some more rust repair needed to be done. Since that was happening anyhow, Justin decided to take out the hard edge and smooth it out a bit.

Here's a few more for today.

The doors are being fitted as well as a quick mock up of the front sheet metal. The metal work on the fenders placed the core support a little too far back, so we'll fix that and it should be good to start raising the wheel wells a bit.

I really like the core support. It mocked up really nice and will give the truck a clean look.

The truck is in between a few other projects so getting a decent side shot is tough until I can roll it forward. Here's a couple shots of the bed on though.

It's still in pieces. We had to take at all apart in order to raise the floor up and still preserve the stock wheel wells. Rather than make new ones, we'll widen the stock ones so it has a somewhat factory look.

Just for reference, the wheels that are on there are just for mock up. The new ones will have the correct backspacing and width so they sit a lot further out. THe ones on there now look silly...

Thanks! It's definitely a cool build. Although there is a rendering that we need to stick to for this one, there's a lot of room for interpretation. It's allowed us room to be creative, but still stick with the same overall theme as the rendering.

There was a lot of work in fitting and assembling the bed, so rather than bore you all with mundane pictures of that, I figured 'd wait until some cool work was done.

Here's a few shots of the wheel tubs that were widened and a few of how we raised the wheel opening on the bed. IMHO raising the lip makes the biggest difference when the trucks are this low. It really gives it the right proportions when contrasted with the rear wheels.

What did you start with for the bed floor?

We ended up just getting a new bed floor to cut up. It was cheaper, faster, and looked better than making the pieces from scratch.

Goodguys will be driving this truck all over the country, and it needed to retain as much bed as possible. Had we raised the whole entire floor, I probably would have gotten an nasty-gram e-mailed to me.

The taillights from Marquez showed up on Friday and we were anxious to get them in. They look great, just took a bit of work to get them in. It was easier to make a filler panel and then re-cut the opening to get the gaps right. In the end though, they're a sweet taillight bezel. The led's aren't here yet, but I'll post some pics when they get in.

We also made a filler panel to take up the gap in the bed and tailgate. The panel unbolts so the tailgate can be removed. It's a little detail that won't really be seen, but it creates a nice look, so it's worth doing.

The interior is starting to be put back together.

We removed all of the inner sheet metal part sin order to make sure there was zero rust hiding. Good thing we did too, because there was a ton. Now it's time for it to all be put back in, as well as a new trans and driveshaft tunnel.

Because the corner pillars were pied, there's going to be just a tab bit of massaging to get the inner panel to line back up. Not much though.

Since this truck sits so low, the trans and driveshaft tunnel are going to be more car like, than truck like.

We also wanted to make sure there was plenty of room around the trans to work on it. We all assume the winner of this truck is going to drive it likes it's meant to be, so at some point, it'll need some kind of service. Nothing worse that trying work on a show vehicle that's not built to be worked on. There's ample hand room in there.

Since the truck is getting pulled apart at this stage for paint and what not, The guys rolled it outside. This was the last time for me to see the truck or take any pics of it in bare metal.
The final ride height is still not set, but it's pretty close at this point. Just a little bit of leveling and setting the stance now.

This is looking killer! I loved the Eric Black rendering! I thought it was supposed to be a modern take on GM's Lindale blue? Has that changed?

Here's a few updates:

Frame made its way back from powder coat last week. We got the exhaust finished and had it coated at Jet-Hot. Turned out great and the coating really makes the clamps stand out. We got the motor and drive shaft installed and pretty much anything else that we could before sticking the cab on it.
Palmers Custom's finished up the cab in record time and it turned out bitchin. It's hard to get a true picture of the color, but the blue on this cab is awesome.
