I don't really know if this is the right place to post this, but does anyone know where I could get a reasonable rendering done for my 1970 Nova SS build?
thanks in advance Trent

what do you call reasonable? I know of at least 6 guys that do renderings that frequent the boards.

It's worth around $100.00 for me to have an accurate rendering done. Don't know if that's a realistic ballpark or insulting for someone's artistic time? Thanks

Everything I've heard is about 700-1000$ for two different angles...etc

No issue with paying for someone's time and artistic ability, but a grand is not worth it for me. I'd rather put it towards the Ride tech kit I need for my car.

Well I'm getting Jason to do mine right now, and I can tell you it's not $700 or more ...

I do hand drawn renderings if you're interested in something of that sort. The computer generated renderings are fantastic but you pay a premium for them as well. I'm around $200-$250 for say a "front/side" view. Hand drawn and in color. I try to get quit detailed. This is just something I do on the side. Here's a couple crappy scans of recent examples below....

Try Mascoll Designs. Last year he had a Black Friday Special on computer generated renderings for $110. Here is a link to last years special.

I was doing them for local people for $100-$200, side /front/rear, stripe designs body mods etc. after building mostly body and painting I know what is realistic unlike the computer art guys.
I do not do it much anymore because the computer renderings are so realistic us by hand true artist can not compete.
I now do auto/motorcycle oil paintings and some airbrushing.
I do not know why people pay so much for a fake picture when you can just take a pict of you car and have some black and white copies made pick up some good marker at a art supply store and try it yourself .

I had John McBride do my car; highly recommended, but not at the lower end of the cost spectrum.

My girlfriend does rendering, it was her main job before she got one doing 3d imaging at a biotech company. All I can say is that $100 is a deal for a true 3D rendering. It takes a long time to do one. Here is one she is working on now:

It takes a long time to get a rendering complete, and at $1000 your getting into pay range where the artist is better off working at McDonalds. There are at least 160 hours into that model, and thats just a starting point.

My name is drew Arlotta and I own a kustom hotrod restoration shop in the Buffalo,N.Y. area. We have an employee who does hand drawn car renderings for us and all our followers. They are extremely detailed to the point that people are amazed at how authentic they look. He can do black and white or full color of your car for 100.00 to 175.00 for an 11 by 17" picture. Chip Foose would be proud of these drawings !!!!!!!!!!!!! Contact us at hotrodgarage@ymail for info. Thanks, drew

The good thing about computer rendering is that with the more common cars like 67-69 Camaros the bulk of their model is probably already done as they will likely have done them before.

I don't do car renderings, but as a professional illustrator and designer I won't do anything for less than $500. And that's for something I can bang out in a couple of hours. $100 for a nice car rendering is borderline insulting.

I have done them on the side for several forum members and also do them for folks through Speedtech Performance. McBride is one of my heroes. Those pencil drawings are nice, good job guys! :)
I do mine digitally with a 2-D program, not as 3-d models so each one is unique- not just a slightly changed model. I think the general time investment for artists that do them this way is about 15-20 hours. They're much like building a car, you can't really charge what your time is worth, the cost would get out of hand quickly, especially if you add in design consulting and idea sketches.
Most decent professional dedicated hot rod designer/ illustrators charge in the neighborhood of $450-650 for a single 3/4 view. To some that may sound pricey but you have to consider this isn't a crayon drawing on notebook paper or simply kicking out a generic drawing based on what the client says. It's a project build blueprint usually accompanied with suggestions that keep you in the realm of good overall design, by someone who has paid the price to go to design school, spend years learning the craft and developing a skill set, has a good understanding of old cars (who likely has built their own project car), insight into the industry and is up to date with current trends. In essence, when you hire the higher end designers you're paying for a complete package, not just a car drawn on a piece of paper. An average $550 is a great investment when you compare that to $20,000 in jacked up paint and body work that all has to be redone because you and your builder weren't on the same plane. You'll notice each of the more well known builders use renderings, they know the value of good communication between the builder and owner. BTW, have you seen what people charge for oil paintings that you don't even understand what the heck you're looking at?
When I do renderings I send a 16x20" glossy photo poster as part of the deal. Some folks just send the files so you can print them locally. There are lots of good artists out there, best bet is to choose someone who's style you like best and who won't steer you wrong in their consulting. Personally, of all the artists out there, I like the ones that can reproduce accurate dimensions for the car. When you get too cartoonie or artsie fartsie it's hard for a builder to interpret the details into the real car's dimensions and body lines. Just my opinion there, but I've heard several shops say that. McBride's Camaro shown is a great example of something a builder can look at and easily reproduce.
Below is a recent one I did for one of our clients overseas. As you can see there is great attention to detail and effort to make it something you'd be proud to display on your living room wall or at the car show. All good artists put their all into it like this one, and what they charge is worth it. Not meaning to sound harsh, those that charge next to nothing in effort to be competitive and/or land the job are selling themselves short, and also shooting those in the foot that have paid the price to charge what their skills are worth. Personally I'd rather buy my performance car parts from a reputable dealer than Walmart. Again, not trying to step on anyone's toes :), just saying that like anything in life you get what you pay for.

You can make decent money doing art for the right clients. I bought my 77 Firebird, Hotchkis TVS Stage 2 kit and custom exhaust with about 60 hours of work. My whole project only uses money I make doing freelance illustration and design. Nothing from my day job as an art director is used. That keeps my wife happy and me motivated.
Ben, you do very nice work. Your prices are more than fair for that high level of quality. Keep killin' it!

Thanks for the compliments gentlemen.
Again, I wasn't meaning to be harsh and my thoughts weren't directed at any one individual.
Project77- I'm in the same boat, my car was built by side job renderings and design, except lately it seems all the spare cash goes towards bills. How did that happen? lol!

Nice work.
I went back to working in oil. I will be trying some paintings of finished cars and try other forms of car art.
