Whats with the ads right in the middle of the posts?

The new ads are experimental and we are just testing the waters with them in terms of website experience, placements, and revenue. Things may change in a couple of weeks. It is my hope that they will help me take the site to a new level.

There is one ad that keeps trying poping up at the top of each screen and the home page and it cannot be opened. the

res://ieframe.dll/http_400.htm#http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?format=undefinedxundefined&output=html&adk=3256744672&lmt=1385227538&ea=0&flash=11.6.602.171&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pro-touring.com%2Fthreads%2F103266-ads&dt=1385227538147&shv=r20131120&cbv=r20131122&saldr=sb&correlator=1385227538163&frm=20&ga_vid=1293162764.1385056448&ga_sid=1385227325&ga_hid=319415880&ga_fc=1&u_tz=-300&u_his=8&u_java=1&u_h=1080&u_w=1920&u_ah=1040&u_aw=1920&u_cd=32&u_nplug=0&u_nmime=0&biw=-1&bih=-1&oid=3&rs=0&vis=0&fu=0&ifi=1&dtd=16

it also looks like the data (advance search, faq) right below the home/whats new is scrambled and going over the top of itself

Its funny, I never realized that there was supposed to be an ad at the top of the forum. I always thought it looked rather oddly blank.

Firefox works fine. Must be my IE browser running an older version to work with oracle

While I personally don't like the ads, (reminds me of other forums) if it helps Larry take PT.com to a "whole new level" I'll learn to deal with it. This is already THE forum to be on so I can't imagine what he's got up his sleeve!

Sorry and thanks. I'm hoping to do a LOT more event coverage and who knows what else we can do? New software, faster/larger server and so on.

Larry, something is amiss with the forum. When I open any of the threads to read them I "used" to be able to hit the back button to go back to the new post page. As of today I cannot do that and I have to either kill the window I am using to view the forum or hit the "new posts" button again. This has made the forum very clunky to view and is very frustrating...

Did that just change for you today?

Wow these suck!! You need to have a "supporting membership" or something, so we can get rid of these ads.....They are worse than the paint stripper I've been breathing in for the last hour.....But I understand the reasoning...

Really don't dig them. BUT, I understand the reasoning.
I'm sure I'll be here either way none the less, but if you're taking votes (and you're not! LoL!), then my vote is no.

Ads are bad. bad bad bad. GTO Forum has too many ads and is so slow, just becuse the ads always need to load before the content comes up. I stopped going there because PY forums is simple and faster. Waiting and dealing with glitches is so frustrating.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm listening and working on it. We will do a little tweaking and see how it goes for a couple of weeks.

I don't mind the ones between posts and such, and on forum & post tops & bottoms, etc. I get that, no problem. However ads in posts bother me. Like this one. I have not seen it yet, but when posts have people's words turned into hyperlinks, that is irritating as well. Just my $0.02 as a long time user.

Edit: crap there is an ad inserted into my post! lol
Edit2: no it's gone! ha ha

try putting your cursor over the back button, hold down the left mouse button, and when the drop down menu opens you can pick the last page you were on.

wow, I don't know how but after my last post I went back to the beginning thread and there was a ad from a local bank here in Jonesboro! How did that get into a forum controlled in California? the bank is "Liberty Bank of Arkansas". On a side note though, that banks name has changed it was sold about a month ago.

Larry,
I don't care for the ads inside the posts. I feel they are a bit invasive and misleading. Ditto on the back button not working.

Sorry Larry but bad idea!! As some others have stated and other sites have done maybe a membership?? This way if I want I can pay to not have the nasty ads show up I can. There are a lot of cool web sites that I do not go on because of the ads, they slow down loading of pages and when they are in the posts that's just not right.

Also I started another thread about this before I saw this one so if you need to move it or combined them??

Yeah just for the record and some input, I would pay a little more for a membership to not have the ads.

Either way, it's an awesome site and I would rather put up with the ads than have it go away. JMO

How I saw the above and my $.02. In a post is no good poor form, IMO.

I'm not 'no ads'. Such as these. They are fine

edit: argh, it added an add to my post!
edit2: it appears if you edit your post the ad goes away.

I just need a little more time to see what works where, what we can leave, what we need to remove and so on. In the end I'm certain it won't be the same as it is now.

Really? A member almost 10 years with over 2,000 posts and you can't even give it 24 hours?

dcrider69

Larry, do you mind telling me how much bandwidth the site uses? High and low? The ads are very annoying and horribly slow page download due to all the cookies/tracking that the ads entail. I don't think the pay per click route will payoff the downfall of the ads on the site.

I agree, Larry deserves some slack. I'm quite sure Larry will find a good balance.

Larry,
I figured the ads were a long time over due. I think that a lot of people are just miffed because it is starting to look like some of the other sites out there. I think the amount of ads are a bad idea, but some ads aren't bad at all. Im sure you will get it figured out. Maybe a membership option isnt a bad idea. Something along the lines of more space for storage and all for a small fee. I am going on 10 years on this site, and I know there are several of us out there. I just think that a small fee for a certain additional perk would go far. Being as that some of us are building some high dollar cars and this isnt a cheap hobby a few bucks a year to support a site as awesome as this shouldnt be such a big deal. Just my .02

Not liking the ads either. Aside from slowing things down and being very distracting while trying to read a thread I see other drawbacks.

1. They make the forum look cheap in that it looks like the small forums set up on those free forum hosting services that profit from the ad overloads.

2. They devalue the advertising already purchased by the "sponsors" by diluting the ad pool. Particularly if the new ads directly compete with current "sponsor" advertising. Would Amsoil guy keep paying to advertise if oil ads from other companies kept popping up at a fraction of the cost?

3. Viewership might go down as some of us will not frequent the forum as often or stop completely. If that occurs the advertising value to the current 100 "sponsors" would go down.

The ads at the top of pages and bottom, I can see and expect. Like others have said, and the main reason I posted was because of the adds that would split someone's post in half. Like others have said, I would pay for a supporting membership. This site is a wealth of info, and a great place to learn.

Too much spam all over the site now. Makes it so busy. I've noticed I spend less and less time here.
