View Full Version : Strange C-Clip Eliminators?

Currently I have a set of Moser C-Clip eliminators on my '69 Camaro 12bolt and I can't get them to stop leaking. Moser says that it is because I am using them on the street and the side loads will cause the ball bearings to leak.
I see that Strange has a tapered bearing C-Clip eliminator kit that may work. So here are the questions I have.
1) Will the Strange C-Clip eliminator kits install the same way the Moser ones do. Since my axle housing is already modified, I would like to find something that bolts right in.
2) Are the tapered bearing kits prone to leaking as well?
Thanks for the help.

I'm also not too worried about them sealing up against the brake backing plate. I am using rear discs, which have a machined backing plate, so I should be able to get those to seal. I am just worried about oil getting past the bearing itself.

I don't know if the Moser unit installs differently, but I have the tapered bearing Strange kit. I ran it all summer, AutoX and road courses. It is not leaking so far. It actually has a seal on both sides of the tapered bearing. Since the bearing is greased, I blocked off the 2 holes in the side of the cover gasket to keep the rear end lube at the gear.

Good to hear.
What rear brakes are you using?
To install the Moser eliminators I believe you just cut the housing off near the backing plate flange. Then the C-Clip eliminator bolts to the flange. (I bought the axle with them on there, so I am not 100% sure.) Is that how you install the Strange kit?

I have the stock drums for now.
I bought the car with the C-clip eliminator kit already on it. It looks like they left about 1/4" or less past the flange when they cut the tubes. Strange has the installation instructions on their Web site.

Thanks again. The biggest problem I am running into right now is that I have LS1 rear discs and I don't think I will be able to get the spacing right with C-Clip eliminators. It might be my best bet to go with new housing ends.

Does anyone know if I can use the Moser axles I have that work with my C-Clip eliminators with Ford style axle ends? I don't see why it wouldn't work. I would be looking at the Moser 7900fm kit.

The Strange part number A1033 is a C-Clip eliminator for use with Stock Dimension axles, It does use the Timken tapered bearing and is recommended for street applications. Few companies offer C-clip specific Disc brake conversions, Wilwood does. Check out Wilwood part number 140-5237 B or 140-5236 B.
As for using your current axles with a different housing end, you have to consider the spacing required for the brakes you plan to use. To get the spacing correct you will need to space the axle out differently and you may not have enough bearing journal to hold a spacer, bearing and lock ring. I hope this helps.

I did forget to mention one important part. I actually already have a set of Moser 1.531" axles. So I don't believe these axles were designed for C-Clips. They seem to have a larger bearing surface.
I don't see a reason why I couldn't use these with Ford axle housings. I just need a bearing with a 3.15" od and a 1.531" id.
All the bearing I am finding in that size are ball bearings though. Which I don't think would be great for side loading???

I had a similar problem (except MW eliminators intend of Moser) either way I explained everythingI had to Strange and am running their "circle track" axle/ bearings along with some bolt on floating caliper rear disks. I'm really happy with the axles and they haven't leaked a drop but I don't think you will be able to re-use those axles, Strange tapers them as well to keep the flex to an absolute minimum. I just looked it up and axle seat dimension is not going to work, Strange is 1.772". You could probably sell the moser axles and get the whole A1100 package for about the same cost as just the tapered bearing eliminators, here is a catalog cut of the kit I have: http://www.strangeengineering.net/catalog/pdf/011.pdf

The Strange kit has a bushing pressed in the bearing to fit the stock OD axle. If you do not have good axles I would bet you can get axles that the bearing presses on directly.
I can tell you a friend with a 79 TA rear disc setup used Moser C clip elim. no problem.
