is power steering a good idea for auto X and road racing?
i come from a drag racing background and power steering was just a drag on the motor that wasnt needed. my current build is a pro touring type build that will see lots of street time, a good amount of auto X and hopefully some road racing.
so will it be a good idea to put power steering on?

Yes, on a circle turner having the power assist is over and above the straight line parasidic loss of the pump. Being able to easily "turn" the wheel makes for smoother, more consistant lap times. You will see even the Nascar boys run PS... :)

Road racing isn't that difficult with manual steering, but the tight corners of autocross will be quite a workout. So yes!

I have a light car with only 245 front tires and 8:1 steering. On big autocross tracks I can get away with manual steering but on tighter stuff I am strugggling. So I am adding power steering....

....unless you eats your spinach and you're strong to the finish.

The roadster was manual steering and it drove fine but, like Bryce, by the time I got the steering quick enough it was a lot of work to autocross with. With power it is much better. If the car is easy to drive, it is easier to go fast.

I'm currently switching over to a power rack. The manual was fine for daily driving, but get on some Autocross courses and you'll find yourself giving up time on the track, not really knowing what-if-any adjustments to make, etc. And at the end of day....your tuckered out. My last two Autocrosses (Run to the Hills/ Big Course and Goodguys Charlotte/small tight course) finally made me change my mind that power was the way to go.
So to add as those already have...... YES. Some type of Power Steering would be in your favor. Best of luck on your build.

Yes. Even on a nice twisty road, power steering can be the difference between saving your bacon and giving it to a deer (or a ditch)...
