View Full Version : Been asked to make a pro-touring bumper package for Gen1 Chevelle - Feedback

I've recently been approached to veer from my focus on Falcons and Mustangs to design a light weight Fiberglass or Carbon Fiber (not sure yet) front and rear bumper for a Gen 1 Chevelle.
The guy is really open to whatever and has no real preference so that means I get to run with it. I'm thinking of cleaning up the rear, tucking it in a lot like I did the Falcon and possible rear diffuser if it looks \ functions right. Not real sure in the front still but would like to do an air dam or spoiler \ diffuser setup if it works out.
I am very interested in thoughts and design queues from the forum. This should be a pretty fun build (or horrible disaster that I'll throw in the trash.)
Thanks in advance for sharing.

Tucking & cleaning up on both ends definitely should be priority on your list. For the front, I think the air dam being a separate part, possibly adjustable, would make the front more versatile & more easily repairable. Just my thoughts.

Yes, a tuck and clean is on the list.
Nice, I like the note of adjustable for the spoiler. Noted
Not sure which angle will be the best compromise of function\ style.

spoiler /
or splitter _

I like this side but tighten up that gap between the bumper and where that chrome trim is.
Playing with the idea of doing something like they did on this build where they carry it tight to the fender all the way to the wheel well

The rendering on Rob's has some good simple boxed lines to the bumper too.

Like the orange, despise the other other, too much.

Make one front valance. design it to accept a camaro front spoiler. Then make your own front spoiler, airdam and airdam with splitter that would bolt on to the valance.

For suggestion 1:
Gen1 or Gen2 Camaro front spoiler?
For Suggestion 2:
Yes! it may be a little aggressive but the more i'm looking at how to do it, I like the idea of a hardcore air dam w adjustable chin splitter. His Chevelle is intended to be somewhat low so that might work out nicely!

I love what they did on the orange Chevelle. To me the other one goes back too far. I think the Camaro spoiler is too narrow to be very functional on the Chevelle because its so much wider. From what I've been reading on aero you want an airdam to block air going under the car as much as possible, and you need to stop the air from interacting with the wheels. This is partially the reason its taking me sooooooo long to design mine still.

I agree, the trick is getting the air blocked around where the wheels are without making it look silly or MADMAX is tough (not impossible though!) Like any good partnership, I'm accepting it'll be a compromise.
The more I look at the Orange one the more I like some of the things I see.
I know i'm a bit crazy in liking the bumper that goes all the way to the wheel well but... with the right imagination and shaping it **MAY** help with some of that air dam styling issue.
I have many sketches to play with this week!

I don't have anything production.
Nick, what year and style are you looking for? I only have so much room so I have to prioritize what comes in. I have a 65 Mustang scheduled to come in for a custom front and rear after the Chevelle build so if theres enough of an interest, I can negotiate a longer time and do a piece to take molds from.
The owner of the 65 wants a version of the race day I have on the Falcon but to fit under his stock steel bumper if possible. Not sure if you were looking for something different.

66-67 Nova front and rear bumpers please and a cool front spoiler to?
All I need is someone who's willing to leave their 66-67 Nova with me in Riverside, Ca for a few weeks and I can make that happen! ;)
Would be interested in what you're looking for just for my own curiosity.

I also have a 65. I'm looking for something like the shelly style but with a chin on the bottom.

Im listening!
Any examples to what your'e looking for? I'll have a 65 in here soon so if theres a drawing to go off of, I can work out some extra time to build something in addition. The owner is really cool and would be happy to leave it in the stable for longer to help make something cool for others.

I LOVE the CF one on the red Falcon picture above. My only suggestion would be to make it a bit narrower than the Chevelle and a little more sleek so it fits my '67 Camaro.
Thanks. :fingersx:

Finally a lover of the extended bumper!
It's actually a fairlane so way more fancy than a base model Escort ... errr... Falcon ;)
I own a 67 Camaro so making bumpers for those is no problem at all ;) I've just never attempted since theres so many great options out there already.
Doing bumpers for 1st gen Camaro, Early 70s Cuda or the 67 Mustang Fastback is like an American Idol contestant trying to do Whitney or Mariah. You better have Foose talent to take on the icons!

I wish you weren't in Cali, I'm all the way in NJ. Would love having more guidance from someone with more experience. I'm still drawing stuff out for my 71. I hope I get it all figured out so I can get her ready for the spring. :fingersx:

Good call, Bryce. This got us going in the right direction.
Took a little bit of Camaro + Nova to get things going where he liked them. Still a work in progress but you nailed it.
Started leaning to more of these types of lines (but with the aero portions under)

I sent you a email regarding a set of bumpers...and or fenders for a 70 Chevelle. I didn't get a response, did you not get my email? Please email me for any questions I'd definitely take the bumpers tucked and narrowed of course thanks

Yeah, I was kicking myself when I tried to respond to you and realized I didn't have a section on the form for a phone number or email address.
Rest assure that wasn't the only thing I messed up on that day!
sent you an email.

Really like the renderings and I with the width difference how about looking at a splitter from the later 5th gen Camaro to get the sizing you need? The splitter off a new ZL incorporated into the bumper may just be the ticket.
