Alright so as the story goes, I made a stupid mistake, and bought a 69 gas tank forgetting that they changed the filler neck position. Is there anyone that has done this. What fab work went into it? Im working on my fabrication skills, have basic tools, a mig welder and willing to learn more. Im new to fab work but i have done some, i made he tubs for my car... but this has put me at a stand still. The only thing I can think of doing is cutting the hole where the license plate mounts to make the room for the filler neck. I also thought of putting blocks between gas tank and body to make it sit lower and get the filler neck through the hole, but Shes lowered about 2 inches from stock and idt that's the best option... I already bent the filler neck down and re soldered it, but didn't get the clearance... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Will post pictures if needed

I think it would be fine. But you will have to get a license plate that has a hinge on it. You will have the gas door above still. You could either weld it closed or leave it alone.

A new tank can't be very expensive. I have one that was in my '67 Camaro for less than a year before I switched to a fuel injected tank. If you're local I'd swap it for a case of beer.

Can you cut the filler neck in half and add a fuel rated rubber hose to connect the two halves? Then figure out how to mount the top to the normal 68 spot? Newer cars run a rubber connecting hose between the tank and filler

Yes id weld the other location, and smooth it. Unfortunately I'm in Illinois, so as much as id love to take you up on that 67rally, it'd be a hell of a drive haha. And I didn't think of cutting it off and using a hose... the problem I'm facing right now is that the filler neck level is already really close to level with the fuel tank... so the bottom edge of the filler neck is almost even with the top of the gas tank. I was thinking if I could mount the tank down further it would all line up. I also thought about cutting into where the license plate would go and letting the body line kind of cover the cut along with the license plates bracket from a 69

Seems like a lot of work when a new tank is $100-150.

Agreed. Can't you return the tank, and get the correct one?

Cant return it, tank is sumped for the next stage of the build... and if I can make this work, I think it'll be something cool and different. I know people have done this... just cant seem to find a write up on it.
